.

Mail cost are getting totally loopy in recent times.

Need to replace a few cheap clay Terra Cotta Warriors soldiers I have as a wall display.

They are 12 cm high and weigh just a few ounces.

See this one for under $A10, the usual price point, but postage cheapest way is near 10 times that.

And eBay of course adds 10% GST on top of both figures. Way over $A100 before the PayPal currency screw, Crazy.

Ebay shipping cost TEN times the small item cost!

eBay adds 10% GST because it is the law.

Australians complained about the competition from overseas, so GST became mandatory for online retailers like EBay and, yes, postage is part of the GST leviable amount.

They may be using the eBay "Global Shipping Program" which adds completely absurd postage charges.

Also, there have always been sellers listing cheap items that they make up for with high shipping. This used to be a way to duck eBay fees, but eventually they caught on and charged fees on the shipping. Also, search uses "price plus postage" so you can't move your items up in the search results that way. I'm not sure what the advantage is now, but some sellers still do it anyway.

If I had a suspicious mind I would guess that when the items arrive as a box of broken statues and you claim a refund you get $9.53 back on your investment of nearly $100.

I don't know if refunds work that way so a guess only.

A pretty lame guess too.

To get a refund one needs to tender images of the broken statue. And then and only then does the SENDER lose the entire $100. See any fatal flaw in your genius plan here?

When I look at what appears to be the original listing that Glen complains about, # 312153577935, it shows a cost for shipping to Australia as being US $54.10 for "USPS Priority Mail International" service. Checking on USPS.com, I find that to actually cost US $52.45, so he is not charging much additional for packing & etc. He could have specified the "First-Class Package International Service", for which the postage would be US $15.25 if not over 8 ounces (~227 grams), otherwise US $25.50.

It's true that international parcel rates out of the US have gotten really stupid. I think this is also true for Australia Post, which is why I don't order albums or box lots from Glen.

In the US, you can mail something as a "large envelope" for $13 or less if it is 15" x 12" x 3/4" or less and weighs under a pound. So a modest stack of album pages, or a group of covers (I think about 65 small covers will fit in such an envelope). Over 1lb but under 2lbs, or outside these dimensions it can go as a parcel for $25.50.

When you get over 2lbs, things get silly and you're paying $50-$100 in postage.

I'm guessing the original item would have to go as a $25.50 parcel because of the shape.

Depends.....last year I bought a heavy computer on eBay from the US weighing about 20kg. I was only charged around $US80 postage via GSP. To boot, it was delivered to Australia by courier, in about a week. Go figure!

Wrong.

There is zero choice one here can make - sole shipping option is $US54.10 plus 10% Federal GST.

My thoughts exactly. Still, postage costs have risen dramatically in recent years. Long gone are the days of 40c domestic letters, and many here will remember letters from much less than that again.

That said, I usually charge too little postage and end up paying extra myself because I didn't research the postage cost in detail before taking it to the post office. So lots bought from me = winner winner, chicken dinner!

Doesn't make sense though, I once mailed myself a box of books from France back to Australia. It only cost 40 euros for heavy kilograms. Whereas on eBay, I've seen up to USD$20 shipping for a single stamp. Go figure!

Compared to Marlen Stamps your eBayers are in the "Little League":

Guinea John F Kennedy Memorial 100 Franc Missing Red Rare Mint Hinged

Buy It Now - US$59.94

Shipping - US$19,095.00 plus GST etc.

eBay Eseller - Marlen Stamps, Great Neck, New York, USA.

It would be cheaper for me to fly to New York & pick it up in person.

Brad for over $A30,000 you and the good lady and a friend can all fly round trip in First Class!

My dealer advice is, for a hinged post war stamp, this seems a little high?

Over $A30,000, for a HINGED John F. Kennedy Stamp!

Insane 1000s of $ shipping: someone made the famous error of , instead of . or the other way round for the shipping. Often seen when checking for items "highest price inc. shipping".
