I've never collected Penny Blacks, so have no way of knowing if the example shown is right. But the application of a tiny amount of common sense tells me that, at this price, it has to be a dud
I looked at what his negatives were for. Every one of them was for unfranked Machin heads without gum. I am sure the bottom feeder buyers only ever intended to use these stamps for their collection and had no intention of trying to defraud Royal Mail by reusing them.
It is also interesting that after three years of providing a satisfactory service and making a lot of sales, he has suddenly gone rogue, and has not supplied 40 + orders all priced at under 20 Quid. Five Hundred Quid sure aint a retirement fund.
They probably all deserve each other.

A few years ago it actually happened to me to make a purchase on eBay and the seller died soon after. I was fortunate because I never received the invoice so I didn't make payment and loose money. I am sure of it because the seller was a known person in the philatelic world and his departure was made quite public. Unfortunately heirs did not honour eBay sales...
Good seller has his account hacked and hacker is making some pocket money.
Sounds like a good explanation. One of my clients with a long-standing reputation and a well-stocked warehouse of general merchandise got hacked and they found Ebay impossible to deal with.

Considering that the upset buyers were purchasing these stamps to use on mail and were perfectly happy to defraud Royal Mail by doing so, they are not exactly leading from the high moral ground.

Exactly.
"I simply wanted to defraud the Post Office, and this creep DARES to DEFRAUD me"
Classic ebayer thinking.

Actually, the great majority of "unfranked" lots he's sold have been in the last month or so.
Prior to this, most of the "unfranked" items received positive feedback.
Something has changed, but what?
Perhaps Royal Mail issuing their posties with a "dumb canceller", which I am told often runs dry of ink, but then reverting more assiduously to the dreaded biro. I have recently had little or nothing of a reasonable amount of post "un-cancelled"
Example of the "dumb" canceller
