Show and detail your 'FameFace' and other Bill Hornadge Cinderellas

Post by jaywalker »

I recently did a search on "Fame Face" on Stampboards, and came up with five hits ... one of them mine..

Shortly thereafter, I came across a number of Cinderella FameFace sheets on eBay. I'd seen a couple of them before (the Aeropex '94 and the Pitcairn Islands set of stamps, and I'd seen reference to the Get Stuffed Tax in the Hornadge "Cinderella CD") - but never as sheets.

Quality of images is "sub-optimal" - due to the source material. Sheets are A4 in size, perforated. Marginal text has a FameFace logo, and an address:

Image
PO Box 467, Williamstown SA 5351 Phone/Fax 08 85246859
Some images have text - I have not been able to read some text on some of the originals even with a magnifying glass! It presumably represents the state of home office printing in the 1990s. I've cropped to blacks of four (or equivalent) - any further, and the images become really streaked...

The graphic artist used does not seem to be of the calibre of Monty Wedd (see separate thread "Stamp Oddities"), although there would appear to be some scans of pre-existing artwork. There is also a very, very early attempt at Photoshopping (the Boris and Bill stamp)...

Some content is politically incorrect - in part because it is a product of its time, and in part because Bill Hornadge (https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=44833&p=3292951 was somewhat "controversial" - especially in some of his non-philatelic writings).

I'm sharing images for "historical reference" :| not to make political points. As per Rule 18, if "you come across a post that offends you, read it with an eye toward giving the poster the benefit of the doubt". The stamps are not my designs!!

The stamps are presented in no particular order - other than "as received". I have no ideas as to values, or whether or not that constitute a complete collection or not (so please post other FameFace stamps in your collection).

'FameFace' of Adelaide did this for me in December 1993 to accompany a souvenir (event) cover and post card
I prepared to commemorate the 25th death anniversary of Thomas Merton (1915-1968).
The covers were presented to members of the International Thomas Merton Society in Louisville Kentucky USA.

Was sorting some of my Lord Howe Island Courier Post stock last night, and noticed the first $1.80 Gower Hospital stamp done 20 or so years back, was printed by FameFace - see imprint top right.

There were only 100 or 200 sheets done, and they always have been pretty keenly sought.

Great summary of the "FameFace Cinderalla stamps" Jim. :)

Bill Hornadge was someone to whom all collectors here owe a great debt to.

I wrote a Eulogy for him when he died 2 years back aged a ripe old 94 -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=44833

And many of the members here started out in stamps via Bill's "Seven Seas Stamps" approval Empire and he started the big stamp magazine "Stamp News" - both operations still going strong under new owners.

I purchased vast amounts of Bill's trading stock as he got older, and was downsizing, but very few of these FaceFace stamps were among it sadly. :(

Member here stamps4collectors (who worked with Bill for years in Dubbo and Edited Stamp News) still has these CD Roms he compiled -

Text for the GoogleBot:
Dubbo Stamp and Coin Fair

Attached above is an essay of a one shilling Lord Howe Island stamp prepared by stamp designer Richard Bates in 1979, and commissioned by "Stamp News". The Australian Post Office rejected the design.

This souvenir sheet was printed in a limited edition of 250 numbered copies for the 1996 Annual Stamp and Coin Fair sponsored by the Macquarie Valley Philatelic Society of Dubbo, NSW, 2830.

A set of cricket stamps forwarded to me by Nightwatchman that arrived today:

100th TEST MATCH at LORD's GROUND 13 OFFICIAL M.C.C. PUBLICITY LABELS
Image

Image
100th TEST MATCH at LORDS's GROUND

On the 29th June 2000, at the Second Test Match of their time, to be played at Lord's Ground, the West Indies will join with England to play the 100th TEST MATCH at this famous ground - the home of cricket throughout the world.

To commemorate this important event in Cricket history, the M.C.C. have issued, (as part of their special offer of postage stamps which have been prepared by several Caribbean countries), these 10 PUBLICITY LABELS featuring the Pavilion, as well as the Captains of the NINE International Teams which have played TEST MATCHES at Lord's since the first one in 19884.

Each label gives the number of Test Matches played by that Team ranging from 1 (By the latest - Zimbabwe) - to 99 by the home Team - England. For the serious statisticians, the number of Test Matches, as calculated on the front of each label, totals 101!.

This is caused by the fact that Australia played a Test Match at Lord's against South Africa in 1912, during the triangular Tournament held that year, when England played both Australia and South Africa.

* Because of late changes to Captains, some labels were already printed and so the earlier versions are enclosed without further charge. We even managed, at the last moment, to replace the South African captain, but this selection is the very last we were able to arrange at this late stage of May 14th 2000.

Country Captain depicted No. of Tests
ENGLAND N. Hussain 99
AUSTRALIA S. Waugh 32
WEST INDIES P. Adams 16
INDIA S. Ganguly 13
NEW ZEALAND S. Fletcher 13
* SOUTH AFRICA S. Pollock 13
* PAKISTAN Moin Khan 10
* SRI LANKA S. Jayasuriya 3
ZIMBABWE A. Flower 1

Please note: These labels are to publicise the event ONLY. They have NO POSTAL VALIDITY. The labels have been issued in a LIMITED QUANTITY of 3,600 complete sets and are ONLY available as complete sets, from the MCC Shop or direct form the Agents for this issue:-

Stamp Publicity (Worthing) Ltd
28 Windlesham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, W. Sussex, BN43 5AE

Labels designed by A.Melville-Brown from photographs by Patrick Eagar
Of interest is that these were marketed in England, but presumably created in Australia. They are also one of the few FameFace stamps that I can "date" (back cover suggests that they were being created up until 14 May 2000).

Can't recall his surname right now but that looks like a well known collector/dealer up in Queensland.

I THINK it was Andrew McEarchern or a spelling like that.

As I recall he was head of the Queensland Stamp Promotion Council. Someone else with a better memory might be able to assist further!

Back to Bill Hornadge, surely one of the most creative, and eclectic Philatelic Traders Australia has produced:

The above item is in my Philatelic Traders Exhibit, and I confess to having no idea what Bill is on about.

Any suggestions from Hornadge devotees?

Perhaps just Bill being Bill?

Bill was just a kid then I imagine?

I recall reading he used to help his mother run the Catherine Bay PO.

Lucky he was writing that in 1939 not 2016 or he'd have a Fat FATWAH on his head.

He may have been a "kid", Glen, but what an over achieving kid.

Around the time my enigmatic cover was used, Bill was well in to Vol 3 of his The Australasian Stamp Collector magazine:

Coincidentally, after I scanned the above, I flicked through the mag and there, on page 18, was the following:

I may have answered my own question?

The creation of the cover (that printed on my cover) was all a publicity gimmick.

It would appear Bill was writing the book on philatelic gimmickry from an early age.

Use of FameFace stamps by Bill Hornadge on Review Publications correspondence. Rectangle on letter suggests that FameFace stamps may have been used to provide a "rotational letterhead".

:D Thank you for posting this image McGooley.

If anyone else has seen correspondence with FameFace stamps on them, please share.

Jenny you are correct.

I received quite a lot of typed mail from Bill over the years, and he routinely added a label to top left - subject matter varied a lot of course. :)

Noel Almeida (Nightwatchman) sent me an article by Vito Milani on FameFace Stamps from the October 2017 edition of Stamp News. A second article will appear in the December 2017 issue.
Both (articles) aim to build upon a few previous Cinderella Corner issues that have explored FAMEFACE cinderella. These mainly featured in 1997 and 1998, including a small piece by Bill Hornadge in July 1997 that discussed and welcomed a pair of different Newcastle Centenary labels produce b FAMEFACE.
If anyone has these 1997-98 articles, I would appreciate a copy (or for them to be uploaded on this thread).

My collection of FameFace stamps is currently "temporarily geographically embarrassed" - will have another look they afternoon. I do have some stamps (from Noel and Ann Garrick at Bilby Stamps http://www.bilbystamps.com.au) that I need to scan and upload.
