The one I mailed you with the Priority Mail label is the only cover I did.

It has the 70c Cricket 1989 stamp and was postmarked 2 December 2015 Dandenong Vic 3175.

I can safely say that it will become, in time, one of the earliest documented use (EDU) envelopes sighted of that label, if the cover received the usual mail centre machine cancel or sorting codes.
The long lost cover emerged from the primeval ooze and debris that passes for a desk here today!

It seems from all the posts above, it is CERTAINLY the earliest postal used cover known to the many experts here. It may well be THE earliest cover existing ANYWHERE - I imagine it is. Noel had the foresight to order these stamps November 30, but only sent a single cover - the one below.

The ACSC recorded earliest known use ('EKU') for stamps that had no official issue date and I hope December 2, 2015 is shown for this one.

I asked my PO to backstamp it on arrival, and that cds is there from Dec 4.

It has the orange ink jet tracking bars on back, as further proof of postal service.

I wrote about it in this months "Stamp News" column -

https://www.glenstephens.com/snjanuary16.html

As we can see in posts above, many PO's do not even known if they can SELL them or use them, even as of today - Dec 16!

This is the very first issue of a brand new stamp type. Used over a MONTH before it became officially usable!

And having a cricket stamp and cachet, makes it even more interesting to many. :)

I appreciate Noel's very kind gesture in mailing it to me, and I really should not benefit financially from that generosity.

So I have decided to run it as a 7 day auction here, for all members to get involved in, if they wish.

The sum of the highest bid will be donated by the winner, to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

https://salvos.org.au/christmas/get-involved-this-christmas/g ... as-appeal/

"Christmas can be a wonderful time, but when a tragedy or crisis hits it can be terribly hard. Children, people struggling alone and families battling to keep food on the table are among the hardest hit.

This Christmas, we want to give hope to Aussies battling the tough times. Donations mean that, here at the Salvos, we can offer shelter to people with nowhere to sleep, gifts for kids who would otherwise get none, hampers for people struggling to afford basic meals, and support for those struck by disaster.

Your donations are enormously appreciated - because they really do give hope where it's needed most."

You then will get a legal Tax Deduction to Vinnies - for buying a rare cover!

I hope it will raise into 3 figures. The winner will post a receipt number detail on this thread, and job done, I'll mail the cover when I get back from Laos, Sri Lanka and India, and stampboard members once again help a great cause with their generosity. 8)

Hope we get some keen bids!

Well I will bid $75, as it is a worthy cause and Salvos (unlike some dodgy charities we read about recently) do use the money for good and to assist those less well off. :)

I again confirm that this is the only cover I mailed with the new Priority Mail stamp/label on 2 December 15.

It has the Sports Series Cricket 70c stamp issued in 1989.

This is the correct present local letter rate of 70c and can therefore be included in a postal history exhibit or a cricket display.

I had every intention of using up one sheetlet of 5 for posting illustrated covers on 1 December, one to Glen in Sydney and the remainder self-addressed.

But the pain inflicted by my endodontist for a root canal treatment is to blame for my non-show at my local PO.

In the end, I thought I better at least get one out to Castlecrag on 2 December, keeping in mind that the deadline for Glen's column in Stamp News was only a day or two away.

I did not tell him about the mailing; I simply sent it hoping for a priority next day delivery!

If bidders on this charity cover are worried about the date of issue, I will gladly send the original Australia Post Order dated 28 November 15 to the winner to keep with the cover.

I offer to send the winner of this charity auction the following drink coaster.

This coaster has the full colour illustration of the Night Watchman Cricket Owl as printed on the cover that is up to auction here.

The illustration was done for me in 1998 by the modern master cover illustration artist, Dave Bennett of Van Nuys (Los Angeles), California
who has worked in the Disney Animation Studios.

Custom made earlier this year in Scotland in a limited edition of 250 with a melamine surface and cork back.

Great offer Noel. :)

OK, I was a little vague in original post as to WHEN this auction would close.

I am sitting on the Mekong River in central Laos right now, and have lost track of "normal" time.

Let's say any last bids are to bet made within the next 24 hours please from the time code of this post.

Great cover. :)

Glen

As there have been no bids in the last 36 hours, I take it that I have won this auction.

Would you please post the details of how to pay for the cover.

Thank you & Merry Christmas :)

Well done Brad, and to the other bidders, and doubtless the earliest known usage of these.

Yes as Ewen highlighted, please make the Donation to the Salvos Xmas Appeal on link above and confirm. Some deserving folks will have a brighter Xmas due to the efforts of all involved here, and that is great to see. :)

I'll mail it off when I get back and Noel of course will mail you the great coaster.

Typing this from central Laos on December 25, where it is a normal working day here. Banks and PO's and all regular shops open as usual. Bizzare.

Well done Brad and Noel. A great result for a great cause.

I am in Sri Lanka now, and will mail in a week or so.

Spent Sunset on New Year's Eve here, on a floating pontoon island, getting my feet nibbled by 2000 hungry fish -- WEIRD!
