Info about Sokotra (Socotra) overprint on two Cyprus stamps?

Post by agondocz »

Hi,

I have been looking for images of the two Cyprus stamps overprinted: "Sokotra". Please note that the overprint is bogus.
From: The Philatelic Record, February 1892, p. 35.

Sokotra, or Socotra, under which latter mode of spelling, this
island is probably better known to druggists than to philatelists,
has, according to the Timbre, been supplied since the 8th January
last with two postage stamps of ½ anna and 1 anna, the former
being for local correspondence, and that of 1 anna for defraying
the rate to Aden. For this purpose the stamps of Cyprus have
been requisitioned, and those of 1 piastre and 2 piastres have been
surcharged at the foot with the value in Indian currency, and at
the top with "sokotra." The island is the
property of an independent sovereign, but since
1886 has been under British protection.

½ anna on 1 piastre, carmine ; surch. in black. 1 ,, on 2 „ blue „
From: The Philatelic Record, February 1892, p. 35.

Hello Glen,

A little too expensive for me, but the Socotora Island labels are very interesting.

GJ50 may have something to write about the Socotra labels. I have seen them before but I am not sure whether they are Cinderella items - used as a fundraiser for the expedition or whether they are bogus.

Thanks for the links and the images!

(And for fixing the title of this thread.)

Best wishes,
AndrewG

In August 2019, I published an article about everything I have found so far about the Socotra releases. It is in Czech language
supplemented by original texts in English and French. Here are also links to many resources - including this page.

Hello iszo01,

I appreciate your information about Sokotra very much!

I have seen four articles about Socotra:
  • Smith, J.A.: "The History of the R.A.F. Postal Service Overseas 1942 - 1955. Socotra" in Stamp Collecting 5 April 1957, p. 132
    Armstrong, D.B.: "Socotra Posts?" in Stamp Collecting, 19 April 1957, p. 195
"Postless Socotra" in Stamp Collecting, 10 May 1957, p. 269
Barnes, R.: "Whatzit: Aden Socotra Expedition" in The Circuit, May/June 2009, p. 4
With your permission I would like to add a link to your page. My list of articles is at: Articles, Books and Other Reference Materials

You may want to go to Roll Call and introduce yourself.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Hi,

From The Circuit, May/June 2009 p. 4: Whatzit: Aden Socotra Expedition:
Image
I don't believe that Richard Barnes was correct about the island being uninhabited. What was surprising back in the 1940s was the discovery by the British military that the people living there had their own language.

The other three articles are brief paragraphs, including a sentence about an RAF airstrip. I should the other articles up in a few days.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Thank you very much Andrew. I've already updated my post. The interesting island of Socotra was inhabited - see Wikipedia.

There are other inaccuracies in the article, so I don't copy it. The expedition was in 1956 and not 1955, the new currency in the South Arab Federation has been since 1965, the author does not mention the expedition from 1964/65.

Interesting is the inspiration of the first emission of Aden. I will look forward to your next articles.

Another article to add to the list:

Craig, A. "Stampless Socotra" in Stamp Collecting (UK), 8 May 1937

I have to wonder whether there have been any articles written after 1957.

Thanks a lot for another great job! I edited the pictures and added them to my article about Socotra - on my blog.
I also tried to contact associations that promote trips to Socotra. No one answers.
Perhaps traveling on Socotra is dangerous and expensive.
See - https://adventuresoflilnicki.com/how-to-get-to-socotra/ from 2019.
I haven't seen a postal document from Socotra that was sent by mail. Just one postcard, but no address.
Regards Ivo

Here is an image of the set of three Socotra Expedition cinderellas, taken from a closed eBay auction:
Image

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143469803181
Sold by becklidge for £3.40 on 15 December 2019
Today the following sheet and part sheet were also sold on eBay, and I'm posting them here for posterity:
Image

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153822240886
Sold by becklidge for £23.63 on 10 February 2020

Image

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143526872778
Sold by becklidge for £40.67 on 10 February 2020
These intrigued me and I had a quick look on Worthpoint (a website which archives some old eBay listings, but you can't see the seller or the price unless you log in), and I found some interesting items. This lot, which consists of misprints of the above cinderellas, sold on 14 May 2010. Unfortunately no better image is available:

I also found the following on Worthpoint. They're bogus Socotra overprints, but on Indian stamps not on Cyprus. I don't know if they're old or something more recent, and they were sold individually on eBay between May and July 2015. From the item descriptions, it appears that the seller was alphaomegaphilately from India.

The crude overprints read "Socotra Island provisional post office", and they were applied to low value KEVII and KGV India definitives which seem to have already been cancelled. Some bear a fake "Deairi / Socotra" postmark. They were all described as "fantasy / bogus stamp".

More recent bogus stamps from Socotra also exist: this one dated 2009 sold on eBay in June 2010 (image also from Worthpoint).

Hello HalfpennyYellow,

Just saw your replies today. Thanks!

I never thought about using Worthpoint for this kind of research.

The bogus Soqatra stamp almost "looks genuine". I have to wonder who and where it was printed.

The same for all of those overprints!

Thanks again,
AndrewG

Hi,

A cover from Hadibo, Socotra to the United States:
Image
The cover was postmarked on 30-12-1998. The cover is franked with two 15 rials Arabian Leopards, and two Naseem Kashmin issues, a 20 rials and a 30 rials.

Best wishes,

Pretty cover, Andrew. I haven't spotted any others like that, off-hand.

For the 1967 expedition noted in this article above, the following mailing from Socotra doesn't appear to bear any additional labels.
Reverse scan not available, presumed blank, Field Post Office postmark dated A/22/MAR/1967.

To fill in a gap in the timeline there's a 1951 cover on eBay just now, addressed optimistically to the Postmaster on Socotra.
Per the first of the two 1957 clips above this was turned back at Aden.

I can't make out the ms. markings - possibly "No postal communications step to Aden (something)" (?) and mention of a reply coupon, presumably enclosed by the sender looking for a postmark for their collection, if so, but at least that would have provided a return address.
The "R.A.F."/"NOT R.A.F." annotations are a good apparent indication of "nothing to do with us", too. ;)

Perhaps they'd've had better luck getting their letter through to the island if they'd addressed it to the hotel the Oxford University Expedition stayed at a few years later. (Still open as of 2020.)

1951 letter addressed from the UK to Socotra. Returned to sender on arrival at Aden.
