Mr Puffin and BigSaint, I must say that Mr Bean did a great job with the character and played it straight all the way through!

I had to look up #25 and I while I've heard of the character and the show I'm afraid I've never seen it. :(

In fact Rowan Atkinson makes a fine Maigret, restrained, serious, persistent and incisive. :D

At the other extreme, Thomson and Thompson do a fine job making Tintin look great. ;)

I've realised that I posted a misleading image of "Thomson and Thompson":
T_&_T.jpg
It appears this shows Thompson twice (and Thomson not at all!)

Here is a more accurate representation:

where the distinctive curl at each side of Thomson's moustache can be seen.

We still have five detectives without any picture clues so far.

All are British with three police officers, one private investigator and one reluctant investigator of sorts.

First the police:

#12 Jonathan Creek, played by Alan Davies _ written by David Renwick.

P.S. I didn't realise that Thomson could be distinguished by curly ends to his moustache!
In French the pair of detectives are Dupond et Dupont. ;)

Some more clues for our last two American detectives:

4 - HB - MC

Police homicide detective in novels and TV:

HB is a detective in the LAPD and has appeared in 23 novels so far.

Image

Here HB is played by Titus Welliver in an Amazon TV production with six series released so far and one more planned.

19 - NW - RS

An "armchair" detective, who solves mysteries sitting in his old brownstone house in New York, while looking after his orchids and eating gourmet meals.

Here NW is played by Maury Chaykin in a US cable series of 20 episodes:
Image

William Conrad
, an actor already famous as another detective, also played NW:
NW_WC.jpg

And here as a bonus is William Conrad starring as Frank Cannon: :D
Frank_Cannon_WC.jpg

My next post will have more clues for our last two British detectives.

Some more clues for our last two British detectives:

2 - CG - PDJ

CG is a private investigator in two novels by P. D. James.

Here she's played by Helen Baxendale in a four-part TV adaptation:
CG_HB.jpg

10 - IRA - NM

RA (or IA, IRA etc.) is the detective in 32 novels by the New Zealand writer Ngaio Marsh.

He was a typical "golden age" gentleman detective (Eton, Oxford, Army etc.) but worked as a police officer in the Metropolitan Police.

Here he's played in a TV series by Patrick Malahide:

The only wheelchair detective I remember was Ironside played by Raymond Burr.

I used to see that often on TV back in the 1970s. :)

I keep thinking of detectives that should have been on the list, especially TV ones.

Yesterday I found this really good website dedicated to detective fiction on stamps created by Steve Trussel:

https://www.trussel.com/detfic/detect.htm

I found this when looking for information on a 1972 Nicaragua set of the "12 most famous fictional detectives" and here are the ones they selected:

Peter Wimsey
Philip Marlowe
Sam Spade
Perry Mason
Nero Wolfe
Auguste Dupin
Ellery Queen
Father Brown
Charlie Chan
Inspector Maigret
Hercule Poirot
Sherlock Holmes

Four of these were not on my list:

Perry Mason from the novels by Erle Stanley Gardner and played here on TV by Raymond Burr.
Perry_Mason_stamp.jpg

Auguste Dupin from short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, especially The Murders in the Rue Morgue and played here by Steve Forrest.
Auguste_Dupin_stamp.jpg

Ellery Queen from the novels and short stories by Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee.

Charlie Chan from the novels by Earl Derr Biggers and played here by Warner Oland.
