Wooah, gratuitous insults there les... There's nationalism, and there's internationalism.

We would much prefer appreciation, such as the caption:
"Oh, how I miss Dylan Thomas! He would have given you words to gladden my heart!"

Two happy experiences to report!

I was very happy yesterday to hear the amazing recording made by Perseverance of the sound of a gust of wind on Mars. :D

And I am very happy today to have just had my first Covid vaccination. :D

nigelc, we're glad the vaccination program has reached you.

Which vaccine did you receive?

/RogerE :D

Footnote: For some reason somone decided to call the vaccination a "jab", and now all
the commentary seems to use "jab". I can't understand how the health professionals
are tolerating that term, as it sounds more violent than "injection", so you would think
it plays into the hands of the "anti-vaxers"...

Thanks Roger!

It was the Pfizer vaccine and the whole process was superbly organised with clear road signs to the centre, with lots of friendly but socially-distanced staff.

There seemed to be a really happy atmosphere although that may have just been me projecting my own feelings!

Yes, the word "jab" is used widely in England for vaccinations.

In Scotland we usually say "jag" instead which seems more appropriate to me. ;)

That was Mr John Prescott - and it was a different kind of Jag! He was a prominent Labour MP and minister of state. I believe he is now Lord Two Jags. The jags in question were ministerial cars.

Yes I can concur with the above when my (lovely) wife got her "jag" yesterday. Of course, typically she received the expensive Pfizer one while I received (slightly earlier due to age difference) the cheapo Astra-Zeneca one!

It is a bit daft, the EU were kicking up a fuss about Astra-Zeneca not providing them with the vaccine they had ordered. Presumably the supply of UK manufactured A-Z vaccine is all heading to the continent so we're getting continental manufactured Pfizer vaccine instead.

Then the continentals were moaning about the effectiveness of the A-Z vaccine, even though reports from Scotland suggested that the A-Z vaccine was giving better results in practice than the Pfizer.

I didn't get to pick and choose, they squirted some of the Pfizer vaccine into my arm on Saturday afternoon.

Thanks nigelc and lesbootman for the personalised update on Covid vaccinations in the UK.

Australia is at a different stage of the program. Last Sunday (21 Feb) the first vaccinations were administered:
.
Office of the Prime Minister wrote:Aged care residents, nurses and doctors, disabled support residents and hotel quarantine workers, were among the first Australians to receive a COVID-19 vaccine today in Castle Hill, New South Wales.

They were joined by personnel from the Australian Defence Force and Australian Border Force alongside Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer and the Prime Minister in getting vaccinated.

The COVID-19 vaccination program was officially launched today ahead of the formal national rollout across Australia on Monday.

Aged care resident Jane Malysiak, 84, from Marayong New South Wales, was the first person in Australia to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it was a landmark day in Australia’s comeback from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have always made our own Australian way through this pandemic and have done so with considerable success compared with so many other countries around the world,” the Prime Minister said.

“This vaccination program launches us down our path out of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021."...

Under the Australian Vaccination Strategy the COVID-19 Vaccine rollout begins with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and will include the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine from March 2021...
https://www.pm.gov.au/media/first-covid-19-vaccinations
.
The early recipients received Pfizer vaccine, so are due to have a follow-up second dose after three weeks.
The Prime Minister said he was getting the vaccine to give everyone confidence that they should also get it.
However, there has been no fanfare over the fact that the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Nursing and
Midwifery Officer received the vaccine. I think they are far more significant role models for this purpose,
and the fact that their participation has not been emphasised downplays the value of their example...
(The PM got it on Sunday, 21 Feb., while the leader of the opposition got it Tuesday, 23 Feb. — so as not to
be seen to be as important as the PM?)

Evidently Australia is reinventing the wheel:
Office of the Prime Minister wrote:The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will be administered through hub and spoke hospital vaccination clinics in each state and territory, and in aged care and disability care facilities across the country.

The number of hospital-based vaccination clinics will increase as more doses of our approved vaccines arrive in Australia.

Vaccination teams will go into aged care facilities — 240 of them across 190 locations nationally this week – to deliver the vaccines on-site.

People will initially get the AstraZeneca vaccine at GP respiratory clinics, general practices that meet specific requirements, Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Services, and state-run vaccination clinics.
https://www.pm.gov.au/media/first-covid-19-vaccinations
A government website has been launched for people to enquire when they will be eligible to be vaccinated.
I just went to that website and answered the first few questions (one at a time, each followed by a "next" button). When asked my age I chose "80" from an annoying up/down control which starts at "1", then I pressed "next". That took me to the question about whether I am a frontline health worker/resident of an aged care facility. I chose the "no" button, and then the "next" button remained pale and unresponsive! That's as far as the helpful website will take me at present, with no apology or explanatory message — just silence. Oh well, that's bureaucracy!

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The nice vaccine went zicker-zack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

My dad was a joiner. A joiner is capable of finer work than a carpenter. He could do anything a carpenter could do plus a lot more besides i.e. restoration work on old timber panelling, stair cases etc., etc. dating back to the 18th century and beyond.

Sadly, due to the medical profession reining in my diet, I'm only allowed fish & chips about once every three months. Consequently I cannot offer an opinion on the puffin's chip shop.

I'm sure Victoria will have told Mr Puffin how good it is! There is invariably a lengthy queue which is always a good sign.

Thank you to Ubobo, Lesbootman, OldDuffer1, RogerE, Panterra and (kind of) RevRed+ for the congratulations! :D

P/S: I haven't posted anything regarding my age yet, so, guess my age! No prizes for the winner though.
Searching for musical instruments, Lions International, Rotary International, the sport of cricket, non-rectangular stamps, and PIGS. OINK!

Chúc bạn có một sinh nhật thật hạnh phúc, Turtle-Bienhoa.

I did a "double-take" when I saw your Vietnamese birthday greetings for turtle-bienhoa.
In the middle of the phrase I noticed "sinh" and this immediately correlated with the
hyperbolic sine function (companion of cosh and tanh, the hyperbolic cosine and tangent
functions). A bit of research revealed that "sinh" means born, and the phrase celebrates the
anniversary of the day our turtle/pig friend was born. Also "tánh" means nature.
No wonder Vietnamese education produces good mathematicians :D
