MONEY MONEY MONEY !

IMG_20210514_0019 (Large).jpg

There is one difference between issue one and issue two.
Issue one: The 26 coins released over a period of five weeks.
Issue two: All the coins released at the same time.
With issue one, I could get all the coins at my local post office.
With issue two, getting the complete set locally would be highly unlikely.
Therefore I bit the bullet and paid $40 for the complete set in a tube.
This is the result:

Way back in 1981, New Zealand also had sea shells on our definitive stamps. Here are some of them:

nz-81-Shells-U.jpg
New Zealand 1981 Sea shells definitive.

The 20c features the paua (or abalone) shell, a brilliant rainbow-reflecting shell, widely found washed up on beaches, and frequently adapted to make jewellery. Fortuitously, 20c was the letter rate at time of issue, so vast quantities of that attractive stamp got into wide circulation.

The happy Pacific country of Samoa has occasionally shown sea shells on its stamps. Here is a rather nice set (self-adhesive and cut to shape even!) from 2006:

samoa-06-shells-M.jpg
Samoa 2006 Shells set. Diecut & self-adhesive.

Despite being such attractive stamps, I never saw any mail from Samoa with these stamps on it. In contrast, the self-adhesive Butterflies were widely used, and still pop up frequently.

A truly delightful collection, Puffin! Not often one sees such a vast trove from that far-off isle.

One query I have is whether the cover shown (and several similar in the collection) were actually posted to the person shown on the address, or whether this is just a CTO cover that a later purchaser has stamped her/his address on?

In the "good old days", delivery would be proven by a datestamp on the reverse, but these days, one seldom sees that, and indeed cancels on the stamps are few and far between too (look at that Australia 1981 Commonwealth Heads of Govt Meeting on a cover just shown by Brad.) That cover would dearly love a postmark, but the posties no longer care.

Some viewers might not realise that the "ammonite" on that stamp is in fact a sculpture made out of leaves — a stunning artwork created by Andy Goldsworthy. Although his works are ephemeral, because he makes them from natural materials that will fade/wither/blow away quite soon after being created, he "preserves" the image by photographing his works.

Great Britain, 1995: Springtime, first day cover and insert,<br />Five sculptural works in natural materials by Andy Goldsworthy

The insert provides details about the creative processes used
and the materials incorporated in each work.

NZ-GVR-95-biplaneMS-U.jpg
New Zealand's Glenbrook Vintage Railway 1995 cinderella set.

Yes, trains are great fun, especially those smoking ones!

Glenbrook Vintage Railway, near Waiuku in New Zealand, issued special cinderella stamps between 1988 and 1995. These were usually produced to coincide with an "excursion": a run where the train would gallivant off down the Main Line, taking throngs of happy passengers to an exotic (or sometimes, rather mundane) destination. Crew offered the stamps and FDCs to the passengers, and many would delight in accosting the driver and fireman for autographs at the stopovers.

Sadly, the scheme ended in 1995 as the Auckland dealer who organised the issues had to end it when one of the other groups participating, pulled out.

I particularly like the 4th stamp, with the biplane near the train!

Yes, they are really wonderful, Redmond. Perfect for railway thematics. When I became a volunteer at the railway a few years ago, I did a carefully-worded proposal for the resurrection of these issues, but the boss said it sounded "too complicated". Non-philatelists seldom appreciate what great public-relations stamps can be! And good fund-raisers. I'll send you some of these next letter.

Here's another:

New Zealand's Glenbrook Vintage Railway 1990 souvenir set.

This issue is notable for featuring a turntable, one of which the railway did not then possess!

Thanks OldDuffer1

Some viewers might not realise that the "ammonite" on that stamp is in fact a sculpture made out of leaves — a stunning artwork created by Andy Goldsworthy. Although his works are ephemeral, because he makes them from natural materials that will fade/wither/blow away quite soon after being created, he "preserves" the image by photographing his works.

The insert provides details about the creative processes used
and the materials incorporated in each work.

Speaking of ephemeral art we sometimes see, in our local stream, some balanced stones. I don't know how the have the patience!
