Ahhh, remember when we could go to the movies ‽

In the Newcastle NSW area there is an excellent volunteer-run cinema,
the Regal, which we love to support. At amazingly low (near "break even")
ticket prices, it offers a great selection of independent and "non-commercial"
movies, with socialising, complementary nibbles and drinks, and a cheerful
welcome and introductory chat from the program manager/projectionist/box
office person/everyman, who also stands at the door at the end of the show
and chats/thanks attendees, while giving out copies of the future program. :D :D :D

The last movie my wife and I were able to attend before "Lockdown" was the
New Zealand movie Jojo Rabbit, written and directed by Taika Waititi.

Did I mention that we're looking forward to the post-lockdown reopening ‽ ‽

If you appreciate "real cinema" with a social dimension, you will love reading this
ABC article about the Regal Cinema:

I was, for four years, a member of the Queen's University film Club, where in an old disused loft, at the top of University Road, for a pittance, you could watch movies from all over the world. My GF and I spent many evenings in the back row, I think the song goes, Kissing and Ahuggin, watching watching masterpieces like Battleship Potemptkin and others from the 30s. It was an era when it was safe to do so, sadly to end very quickly. I wish such times were back. I miss, the popcorn and the wine bottle, smuggled in, in the backpack, with two plastic cups. Those were the days.

Interesting that you mention "Battleship Potemkin", one of my all-time favorite films, and which I now possess a celluloid 16mm print of, and screen on occasion.

These are all photos I have taken of the screen, and sadly the crowds running down the steps is a tad out of focus, as I must have moved the camera. A truly amazing film, and it has been very influential on subsequent film-making! It's director, Sergei Eisenstein, is a true genius.

Memories! In the early 1960s I saw Battleship Potemkin in the "Bughouse",
the bargain-basement cinema in Carlton, Melbourne, frequented by students
of the University of Melbourne... Viewed with student friends, all of us on
tight budgets but keen to enjoy the classic movies and appreciate the great
artistic achievements of their directors and actors. :D

'twas a very happy day when I came to put some recent purchases away which included these which I think I bought from Tom the stamp dealer in Forest Hill:
Image
Excelsior fdc for Prime Minister G H Reid 5c stamp issued 22nd October 1969 - SG #449.
Image

Image
Excelsior fdc for Prime Minister J C Watson 5c stamp issued 22nd October 1969 - SG #448.
Image
I think part of the reason I bought them was the place of postmark, "Sassafras Gully".

So I am putting them away & I find these in my album:
mg]https://www.stampboards.com/images/misc/2054012.jpg[/img]
Excelsior fdc for Prime Minister Alfred Deakin 5c stamp issued 22nd October 1969 - SG #447.
Image

Image
Excelsior fdc for Prime Minister Edmund Barton 5c stamp issued 22nd October 1969 - SG #446.
Image
Well how about that the rest of the set, also pairs, & also postmarked "Sassafras Gully". :D

PS There are so many colour combinations of these I am a long way to go getting all colour combinations with singles, tab singles & complete booklet panes.

While on my regular trip to Waikoa Island, I decided to send Maggie a big package in a first day cover.

But sadly with the pandemic, the regular air service from Waikoa Island to Queensland has closed, so all they could offer me was:
"Why don't you charter a plane?"

Okay, I said, but I'll need to pay for it with stamps (as I know Maggie is a prominent philatelist, and she wouldn't be happy with a mere paper receipt.)

"No problemo," said the Postmaster. "We have recently issued high-value stamps for just such purposes, and it will cost you $15,200 plus the airmail price for your package!"
Image
So Maggie dearest, you should hopefully very soon get this nice envelope with a $200 and a $15,000 postal-fiscal stamp on it. Not exactly the sort of expense I'd want to run up every day! 8)

Only a little bit about Pabay before this night owl has to get some sleep.
Wikipedia wrote:Pabay is a Scottish island just off the coast of the Skye. The name Pabay
is derived from an Old Norse word meaning "priest's isle" and there are
the remains of a 13th century chapel.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pabay

Many of the islands in the area have names ending in -ay, indicating that
their names derive from Old Norse eyisland. An extensive list of island
names with Old Norse origins within the Orkneys is given at
http://www.orkneyjar.com/placenames/pl-isle.htm
Spellings include ey, eyn and even simply -a.

Terry will tell us whether there are Puffins on Pabay, and I predict
he has lots of Pabay local stamps, because they have been issuing
them since the 1960s, apparently.

I guess it's because the Maggie Mailbox stamps look so "authentic." Whereas those Lord of the Rings etc stamps look like pretty cinderellas.

Someone should, with appropriate language qualifications, should admonish him re spelling. Far be it from me to do so as we live, but half a suburb apart, but really, after all this time, Reger indeed!
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Panterra can no doubt supply details about these Free Vinland stamps.
No press release from me, but a comment on this sheetlet:

The $1.35 stamp depicts L. Kamenev (1883–1936). I found that Wikipedia has a long entry
about Lev Borisovich Kamenev. It notes that his name uses Eastern Slavic naming customs:
the patronymic is Borisovich ["son of Boris"] and the family name is Kamenev.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lev_Kamenev

Here are some extracts:
Wikipedia wrote:Lev Borisovich Kamenev (born Leo Rosenfeld or Lev Borisovich Rozenfeld, 1883–1936)
was a Bolshevik revolutionary and a prominent Soviet politician. He was one of the seven
members of the first Politburo, founded in 1917 to manage the Bolshevik Revolution: Lenin,
Zinoviev, Kamenev, Trotsky, Stalin, Sokolnikov and Bubnov...

He served briefly as the equivalent of the first head of state of Soviet Russia in 1917, and
from 1923-24 as acting Premier in the last year of Vladimir Lenin's life. Joseph Stalin
viewed him as a cause of discontent and opposition to his own leadership...

The Trial of the Sixteen (or the trial of the "Trotskyite-Zinovievite Terrorist Center") was one
of the Moscow Show Trials, and it set the stage for subsequent show trials. Old Bolsheviks
were forced to confess increasingly elaborate and monstrous crimes, including espionage,
poisoning, sabotage, and so on. Like other defendants, Kamenev was found guilty and
executed by firing squad on 25 August 1936.

In 1988, during perestroika, Kamenev, Zinoviev and his co-defendants were formally cleared
of all charges by the Soviet government.
This sorry history is yet one more instance of the excesses of ideology.

Stalin's purges were wide-ranging. They even encompassed exponents of Esperanto. In the 1920s
Esperanto was fostered in the USSR, and some of the world's earliest postage stamps promoting
Esperanto were issued by USSR. The underlying political motive among the Russian leadership
was the belief that it would serve as a vehicle for promoting Marxism internationally. But in the
1930s Stalin changed his opinion, regarding Esperantists as counter-revolutionaries, and many
of them lost their lives in his purges.

Alexander Mikhailovich Krasnoshchyokov (30 cents stamp) (Russian: Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Краснощёков, real name – Avraam Moiseevich Krasnoshchyok, 1880 – 1937) was a Soviet politician and the first Chairman of the Government (Head of the state) of the Far Eastern Republic, and later the first leading Bolshevik to be arrested by the regime.

This is my favorite stamp from the set of Victims of the Purges, as I collect Far Eastern Republic (DVR), and their President was never shown on any of their stamps, so now my collection (and that of others who collect the DVR) takes a giant leap forward. Or maybe a small pace forward.
