TODAYS' HAPPY DAY MULTIPLE CHOICE QUIZ.
RogerE is happy today because:
(A) It is his 80th birthday.
(B) It is Mrs E's 75th birthday.
(C) The letter from New Zealand finally arrived.
(D) He got a Coles Little Treehouse book #22.
(E) His football team finally won.
(F) His lotto numbers finally came up.
(G) None of the above.
Entries now open.
Well the answer to the Saturday Quiz can now be revealed.
I waited till today to make a trip to our Post Office to clear the P.O. Box,
in case a positive update on options (C) or (D) might have arrived. Nope.
However, there was a letter from Catweazle:

.
Wombat P&S with slogan 'Stay safe & connected Australia',
Dandenong Letter Centre = DLC 4 Sept 2020 handling.
received Wallsend NSW 14 Sept 2020

So my happiness is down to the safe arrival of a nice Monaco group from Catweazle,
and therefore (G) is the correct quiz answer. :D

THE LATEST GIVEAWAY FROM COLES SUPERMARKETS. REPORT 4. DAY 42/56.
HUGE changes since last weeks report. Most stores in Australia have run out of books so Coles has stopped the advertising on TV and removed all the promotional material in their stores.
I always thought that eight weeks was a bit long for the promotion. Six weeks would have been better.
One of the few stores in Australia still with books is my local Coles :D but I suspect they will run out soon.
My target now is two basic sets and two sets of three of the rares. The fourth rare is SUPER RARE.
My current situation is Set #1. 23/24. need #22. Set two 22/24. need #11 22.
Rares Two sets of three. Special rare 1/1.
That was last weeks report. Here is todays report 5. Day 49/56.
(1) My Coles still have plenty of the books. :)
(2) My current situation. Three complete basic sets plus a 16/24. Rares:Three sets of three. Special Rare. 1/1.
(3) Two #22 arrived in the mail yesterday ( via ebay) Three #22 given to me today at Coles.
(4) Nice recent stamp used on the ebay sending.

Recalls a famous remark by U.S. Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen:
Cautioning that federal spending had a way of getting out of control, Dirksen reportedly observed, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." This singularly colourful Senate leader died at the age of 73 on September 7, 1969.

I am uneasy about seeing so many of these "so called" stamps on Stampboards.

There are so many "genuine" issues that I don't know why people would need to produce their own. Granted there's not much difference between them and some of the junk "proper" post offices release these days.

Still ..... to each his (or her) own; whatever makes you happy.

Years ago I used to work for a company whose main client base was Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. I spoke (in English) to a significant number of native Arabic speakers and visited places like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

The general consensus I got was that Arabic was a very difficult language to learn.

A shame you didn't try to learn some Arabic while you were there, Les! It would make the philately of Saudia and Bahrain much more interesting for you, and probably would have increased social activities also.

I'm just damn glad I don't have to learn English!
So many odd spelling variants and curiosities for no particular reason.

But another point in favour of Arabic (besides it being easy to learn), is that it is the language of God. (Proven, as the Holy Koran says so! And millions of Moslems can't be wrong.*)

Hejaz-blue.jpg
Hejaz 1921 one piastre, with Hashemite overprint. SG 26.

One of the most beautiful examples of Arabic artwork, this stamp was reportedly designed by T. E. Lawrence, (aka Lawrence of Arabia), based on traditional designs from holy mosques in Cairo.

At last I am educated as to what the 85c stamps are for! (I wondered.)

I find the middle cover the most interesting (with 1984 Xmas stamp.) It's 85c stamp, used in the year '85.

That looks like a penny for your thoughts — as one night owl to another, thanks Panterra. ;)

My Happy Day is made happy because I've just completed Post #450 in the Stamps and Languages thread,
and have added an alphabetic index for the last hundred posts (351-450), at
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=90529&start=451

That index includes references to the indexes for Posts 1-150, 151-250, 251-351.
So, it should be a fairly straightforward task for you to track down all the posts in that thread discussing some aspect of your favourite language, or favourite linguistic topic.
If you want to work systematically on a particular language, I suggest that you first look for references to it in the index for Posts 1-150, then look for references in the index for Posts 151-250, and so on, so you look at references in chronological order. This is because more recent posts will tend to assume you are more or less acquainted with what has been said on the topic in earlier posts. I try not to make that assumption too strongly, but it makes sense not to repeat too much detail on ground that has been well covered previously.

Has your favourite language or linguistic topic not been discussed yet, or only been lightly touched on? Let your wishes for further information/discussion be known, and this might prompt some relevant posts.

Yes thats one of my two favourites so far. The other is the 50 cent Fishing stamp cover in the first batch I posted.

Edit: Panterra, I have a new Egypt cover. I will scan and post it tomorrow. Its interesting because it is from Egypt to an area local to me in Germany.

Hi There

My first post here so hi everyone from Australia!!!!

It's great to read through some of the threads here, noting that some collectors have varied interests. I have inherited a huge amount of vintage Australian, Italian and some British stamps, but have my own used ones from all around the world which are colourful as well (probably not worth very much).

I'd really like to know whether anyone is interested in trading some very rare ones with 16mm film or movie posters, as these are my passions. I noticed a few people here have dusty old film prints so I'd certainly consider purchasing too. However, I have a big problem in that I collected stamps as a kid some years back and don't really want to trawl through sites and catalogues for each and every one. Stamps, first-day covers, coins...there's a ton of stuff to get through. Also, the Italian stamps (including colonies going right back to early last century) are difficult to appraise as there don't seem to be a lot of local experts in Australia. Happy to provide photos, although COVID restrictions will prevent me pulling them out of storage for a month or so.
