Which catalogue do I need to find values and information about stamps from Lord Howe Island ?

For the life of me I can't find them in SG Commonwealth/Australia(2007).

It has Norfolk and thats right next door ?

but no LHI

Not another book to buy!

These stamps are from Lord Howe Island, rather than Australian stamps featuring LHI

My guess is they're local carriage labels, like Herm Island and Lundy. Probably not listed in general catalogues.

Yes, "Courier Post" inscribed on a stamp is usually a good indication that it's a Local.

I found your info on google after I posted, I read everything

but nothing sinks in

and great Millenium cover picture !! (I have that, signed by the artist and postmaster but without the Sydney Airport december datestamp and no pilot sig)

I saw your prices in the link, but I was also after catalogue prices, or a reference book, if there is such a thing ? As a comparison.

And also to see a list(or pictures) of all the Stamps/Courier lables issued by LHI, so I can see if what we have here is a complete set or not.

If anyone else has any Lord Howe Island stamps or covers I'd love to see them

I have a few of these striking Captain &crew signed 'Damaged At Sea' version of these FDC's - with FDI postmark.

There were only 100 of this design existing - #1 was presented to the NSW Governor who launched the stamps. Rest of envelopes destroyed as wording was in error.

They were actual yacht carried to Australia by Alan Pitt - M.D. of Renniks/Lighthouse Australia and a crew of friends, and are covered in color cachets inc 'Paquebot' &c. Other cachets inc a boxed red "Damaged By Sea Water In Transit".

Each is hand numbered. They were slightly salt water wettened in the hold in the violent storm that saw a crew member FLY home as he could not face the trip back! Each is also signed by designer Margaret Murray.

So these covers couldn't legally be carried by Australia post ?

Is that why they were brought over by Private yacht ?

Could I go to LHI, get a load of covers, bring them back Via Qantas and get the pilot to sign them ?

I lived on LHI in the early 90's, and none of these stamps existed then

The book you need is this one if you follow this area.

I've known Dr Mayo for decades, and Richard Peck for even longer!

Bill is an eccentric but likeable American from the Mayo Clinic family in New England.

He has built and and sold the world largest stamp booklets collections at least 3 times I can recall.

And the largest LHI collection a few times.

$20 + post for anyone interested .. but the only copy I have is inscribed to me from Bill!

Large A4 sized with a ton of useful info in it and colour photos, available nowhere else.

Mike, it sure is a beautiful place, very deserving of it's World Heritage Listing.

When we were there only a few people had cars and everyone either walked or was on pushbike. Visitor numbers were limited to 400 people at any one time, and no cruise ships are allowed, so it's a very quiet easy going place

My husband was posted there with work, so when that was over we were transferred to NSW.

Only islanders can own property on LHI, so it's quite hard for outsiders to settle there permanently.

Unless you marry an islander then you can stay there

I found only one copy of the book for $50 !! you might want to revise your price for the signed one up a bit

Did a bit of an archaeological dig here and unearthed the first 2 volumes.

Each one is totally different from each other it looks like.

So over 10 years they have managed to cover EVERYTHING LHI connected in 3 volumes.

Long pieces on the LHI 1930s provisionals with many photos of fakes and genuine and covers, the court case with AP, Zeemail, and of course all the local post issues and tons of letters and notes etc.

I'd doubt there is another full set for sale anywhere at any price, as they printed only a tiny number of each.

But in the name of cleaning up my office a bit if you want the 3 at $20 each, they are yours.

Be nice to know they go to a keen student of this stuff. 8)

For the possible interest of members, here is a nice LHI cover I sold last year, and the notes on it.

Sold very fast and several folks asked about it.

1930 Lord Howe Island Provisional Manuscript Overprint - on Cover: In over 25 years of dealing I have never owned or offered one of these famous items. The Postmaster on tiny LHI had a shortage of 2d stamps when the latter rate increased at short notice in late July 1930 to 2d. He telegrammed Sydney GPO to ask what to do, and was advised by telegram to : "use 1½d stamps with endorsement - 2d Paid PM LHI".

So the PM took his entire stock of 260 Sturt 1½d commemoratives, (SG #117) and wrote in black ink pen across each one as instructed, and went ahead and used them up on mail. At this time only an average 80 mail articles a month left the remote island, which is 702 km north east of Sydney, and 1000 km SW of Norfolk Island.

The stamp is tied by "Lord Howe Island OC 3 : 1930 N.S.W" with an additional strike alongside. By the rough strikes of the cancels and the address, this cover appears to be non-philatelic.

This course is NOT what Sydney GPO had envisaged - they assumed he would write the endorsement on the cover to one side, and AWAY from the stamps, but the Telegram was explicit ..... albeit ambiguus.

The PMG Department HQ in Melbourne was unaware of these provisional "overprints" for some months, which had franked LHI outward mail in August, September and early October. When they discovered it, they over-rode the earlier authority, but the PM Mr Fenton was neither officially criticised or reprimanded at any time, as he had acted in good faith.

This is a genuine commercial cover to the Burns Philp Trading Company. Dr Bill Mayo's LHI philatelic book states most of the few recorded covers are addressed locally to LHI.

The very few covers I have seen illustrated in sale cats looks ratty and/or toned. This one is quite PRISTINE for 77 years old - as you can see. SG and ACSC have always listed and priced this rare provisional. SG says it is Cat £650 mint or used = $A1,625. (Note - up to £770 in 2008 cat) Any commercial COVER used in this era is rare - franked with any issue.

SG Says on cover prices for SG 117-125 are " From 10 x " so this one is rated "From $A16,250". A lovely item, in condition that would delight even the MOST fastidious of buyers. Gold Medal exhibit material stuff or one for the super fund. $A1,600

This thread is really interesting. Have never been to Lord Howe but have kept tabs on the place since I used to watch the flying boats taking off from Rose Bay in the 1950s. In more recent times a friend of mine served a term as LHI administrator. Perhaps will get there one day.

This was a really interesting thread.

My wife took me to Lord Howe Island for my 40th birthday. We stayed at Capella Lodge on the southern end of the island, fed the (BIG) fish at Neds beach, dived in the lagoon and went game fishing at Balls Pyramid (twice).

This place is unbelievable! There are wood fired BBQs all over the island that are maintained so that you can go anywhere and have a picnic bbq and a swim.

It is just very expensive to get there and don't even try and carry more than 16kgs!

Your wife sure spoilt you Pete, Capella is one of the high end resorts, very flash

The closest I got to Ball's Pyramid was a joy flight over it, it would have been fantastic to get up close and do some fishing there.

Did you do any Diving while on the island?

EDIT: sorry, just read that you dived in the lagoon

it's the most southern Tropical Reef, and apparently pretty good diving there too with different range of species to Great Barrier Reef.

I don't dive, but the snorkelling was impressive enough

We were lucky, residents airfares were a little cheaper than tourist rates, although we had a stream of visitors while we lived there, some I hadn't seen since uni !!

Lord Howe Island is roughly off NSW, administered by Australia, hence uses Australian stamps unlike Norfolk Island that issues its own stamps and is relatively self governed.

The Courier Service was a private company that operated a courier service on the Island, and being a small island, and with encouragement from philatelicaly inclined persons, issued "locals'" for use with their deliveries.

Unfortunately I caught the bug of collecting these That is the short story, Glen can provide the long story.

Those departure tax labels are interesting Diverpete, and thankyou for adding the other covers to this thread. I LIKE your signed cover very much

I've just been digging around trying to see if I kept any old Airline tickets. If I did they are sure to have the departure tax label used on them. No luck finding any so far

I also remember that when you ran up a tab at the local store or restaurant etc.., they would fold the account in half and seal it with a stamp and postmark and pop it in your pigeon hole. No envelope, just the bill with your address showing, and more often than not the postmaster could see the total owing too
