Hi there,

Did not have much time tonight, but here are my Gold Coast stamps with sock on the nose postmarks

Huanga, do not even think about putting those Transvaal in a tin!! I have very few from there, and like you am not that confident about buying them.

Uttoxeter is one of the few places I have not had a speeding ticket, must be local knowledge

I picked up my first socked on the nose from early Iran, Jask yesterday. I have not seen any like this and assumed at first it was a postmark from India.

Lundy Hi - You were right the first time this is indeed a Squared Circle postmark used by the Indian P.O. in Jask. Presumably cancelled in error on this Persian stamp or possibly a cto use.

[quote="Lundy"]Very nice Doug, Rod and Huanga :D

My only other examples from the Niger (not such good examples)
Bakana and Forcados River

Lundy :D

Image

Lundy this is one of my favourite territories and the BAKANA strike is quite scarce.

This particular example is a c.t.o. example. The date is the give-away. The GB overprints were not put on sale until 20 JULY 1892 whereas your example is "used" some 11 weeks earlier.

To add to the confusion the PO isn't thought to have been opened until Oct 1892.

I was checking the official issue date on the Oil River issues and found that, MacDonald, who first issued them. Was the British Ambassador in Peking, [As it was then.] during the boxer rebellion. What a pity he did not do a Mafeking type overprint when he was there!

However, here are a few more 'socked.' Southwest Africa.

New Zealand. used by the NZ Div. Egypt.

I don't suppose there is much that I can do to improve their condition.

Thank you very much Sark for the extra information,

I really appreciate it and love learning more about these postmarks, may I ask is the Kabana postmark much more common as cancelled to order?

Huanga, more nice ones there, with regards to the condition I dont think there is much you can do, I believe there is a product called fox-it which you may be able to pain to the edges but have to admit I have not tried it.

Donald, very nice KGV head postmark

Seems to be "Likoma" Island; from Wikipedia:

Likoma Island is the larger of two inhabited islands in Lake Malawi (also known as Lake Nyasa), in East Africa, the smaller being the nearby Chizumulu. Likoma and Chizumulu both belong to Malawi, and together they make up the Likoma District. Since both islands lie just a few kilometres from Mozambique, and are entirely surrounded by Mozambican territorial waters, they are both exclaves of Malawi.

And likely "Mkhondo," also from Wikipedia:

Mkhondo Local Municipality, is a South African Local Municipality situated in the Gert Sibande District Municipality, of Mpumalanga. Piet Retief is the Seat of the municipality.

Lundy. Are you aware of the 'Hut Tax' cancels on the BCA stamps? If not, go back a few posts to the BCA I posted, and look at the 'Fort Johnston.' It is likely that would be a hut tax. Your Zomba look as if it might be a tax stamp?

I've become a little bored with Africa, so here is a quick tour of other lands.
Bahrain, tied with a Dutch Queen! Unusual, but I guess the poster wanted to see if it would go through?

Image

Four of the British 'China Expeditionary Force.' Its an interesting history for anyone that wants a reason for the stamp overprints. I could give you the field post office numbers and locations, but you would still have to research the reasons. Better you think of it this way:

An arguement between two old ladies. One wanted some jade from the palace of the other. The other had a passion for blowing up German ministers!!

It is Mkhoma - started off life as a Nyasaland Mission Station - quite a common postmark

Piet Retief ( quite a pretty little town ) in South Africa is probably about 1500 miles from Malawi

Looking at some of the past posts, I guess these could be classed as SON? The blue is upside down because it is an inverted w/mk. If I put it upright, I'll lose it again!

Image

Image

One of these two is upside down for the same reason. Problem is, I now can't remember which. See what I mean! Of course I will be able to tell when I finish this post. Meanwhile they are SG95/12 and 117/6. The latter number being the plate.

Image

The next two are SG116 and 170. That is the die I

Image

The last two SG178 and 180
