WTB - JFK (USA - Scott 1246) FDCs

Post by BigSaint »

In November 2012, I started a thread showing my JFK (Scott 1246) fdc collection. At the time I started, I had fdcs from about 1200 different post offices. I now have about 1900.

This one on a New York Times advertizing cover is probably my favourite from my collection:
Image
However there are still a lot of places that I don't have fdcs from. If you think you have one I don't have check the thread below then post it here. While I have lots of small towns there are lots of big towns I don't have. Over the next few days I will list some of those big towns I am missing from each state on this thread.
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=41842
I thank you in anticipation for your help.

If the cancel you have is different to the one I have I am also interested, like the machine cancel & duplex cancel here from Sundance Wyoming.
Image
I don't mind if the fdc has a cachet or not, or whether it is unaddressed, hand written addressed or type addressed, my main interest is in the postmark.

Thank you

Goldcraft fdcs produced a set of cachets for the members of JFK's Cabinet. I have shown an example below:
Image
However I am still looking for Dean Rusk, Robert Kennedy, Orville Freeman & Abraham Ribicoff. Below is the link to where I have shown all the ones I have of Kennedy's Cabinet.

I appreciate you taking the time to look for these for me.

Goldcraft fdcs also produced cachets for other political figures perhaps I would describe them as prominant political figures of the Kennedy era. Below are the ones I have but I don't know who else might be included in this series:

Although Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ), the man who succeeded JFK, might be a good guess as being included.

Here are a few covers I have addressed to Major William Nelson at his P O Box in Fort McClellan, Alabama. The covers I show below are all around Fort McClellan but I don't have Fort McClellan itself:

1. Birmingham
2. Montgomery
3. Mobile
4. Huntsville
5. Tuscaloosa
6. Hoover
7. Dothan
8. Decatur
9. Auburn

Does anyone have any of the towns in red :?:

Venetie Alaska (on the 67th Parallel) is the most northerly US Post Office I have :
Image
However you have to travel 389 miles north west from here to go to Barrow Alaska to find the most northerly post office in the US. on the 71st parallel, above the Arctic Circle. Barrow is the 11th northern most public community in the world and is the northern most city in the USA. It would be fantastic to find a JFK fdc from Barrow.

Now I wish I could find one of these for all US states. I have never seen it. However I did find one for the state of Alaska, so here is a list of apparently what has been seen:

Anatuvik Pass
Anchorage
Anchorage - Airport Annex Branch
Anchorage - Eastchester Station
Anchorage - Mountain View Station
Chugiak
Eagle River
Halibut Cove
Hogatza
Homer
Juneau
Kaktovik
Ketchican
Kiana
Kobuk
Kotzebue
Lake Minchumina
Manley Hot Springs
Nome
North Pole
Palmer
Red Devil
Saint Paul Island
Seldovia
Shungnak
Sitka
Skagway
Soldatna
Venetie
Ward Cove
Wasilla
Wrangell

Those in red I have
Those in blue are among the 10 largest towns I don't have.

What I surprised about is that the second largest city in the state "Fairbanks" has not been seen :!:

Naco, Arizona, is on the US - Mexico Border with Naco, Sonora, Mexico:
Image
Wouldn't it be great to find a JFK fdc postmarked at both Naco, Arizona & Naco, Sonora, Mexico.

Brad

PS Mexico did issue a JFK stamp for his visit in 1962.

The covers for Naco & Nogales may exist. Below is a JFK fdc postmarked "down in the West Texas town of El Paso" (sounds like it should be a line in a song  ), which has been taken just over the border to "Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mexico" & even uses the Mexican JFK stamp.

Arkansas is the 29th largest in square miles & the 33rd most populous of the 50 United States. The capital & most populous city is Little Rock in the central part of the state. However from such a large state, I think it a little strange that I have the postmarks of only 2 towns "Little Rock" & "Collins".

The 10 largest towns in Arkansas are:

1. Little Rock
2. Fort Smith
3. Fayetteville
4. Springdale
5. Jonesboro
6. North Little Rock
7. Conway
8. Rogers
9. Pine Bluff
10. Bentonville

Any assistance with obtaining these towns from Arkansas, or indeed any others, would be greatly appreciated.

Death Valley Junction is located on the south eastern edge of the desert valley of Death Valley & is the lowest, driest & hottest area in North America. Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, at 282 feet below sea level. Death Valley's Furnace Creek holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature in the world, 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913.

Here are a few covers I have addressed to P O Box 453 Ferndale but the covers are not postmarked Ferndale.
Image
Image
Image
P O Box 453 Ferndale, California, was used by the Cook Ranch, a beef cattle ranch, possibly run by James R Cook who was born in 1921.

I would love to find a JFK fdc for Ferndale addressed to P O Box 453. It is possible that the cachets were made by James Cook.

While going through my collection I found these cachets which I presume are generics by the Universal Philatelic Cover Society:
Image
All the examples of this cachet that I have are addressed to Mr & Mrs R C Norris Jr of San Rafael & bear the rubber stamp cachet shown above too. One would expect that they were members of that Society. The JFK fdcs I have are from their hometown of San Rafael & nearby towns.
Image

Naturally I would like to acquire any JFK 1246 fdcs covers addressed to Mr & Mrs R C Norris Jr. Please contact me if you know of any.

As I collect these covers I find cachets that are not in "Mellone's Specialized Catalogue" of FDCs. In a number of cases all of the examples of a particular cachet are addressed to the one collector, in this instance "Murray Harris" of North Hollywood.
Image
I therefore refer to this cachet as a "Harris" cachet & the towns, all of these places are within a 30 mile radius of North Hollywood, that I have are:

North Hollywood (as shown above)
Burbank
Canoga Park
Encino
Los Angeles
Panorama City
Universal City
Van Nuys
Van Nuys - Sherman Oaks Station

Stanton California is adjacent to Cypress California & addressed to Box 103, Cypress. I have over 30 post offices addressed to this Box, mostly within the triangle of Los Angeles (in the north), Long Beach (in the south) & Santa Ana (in the east). Another of these Goldcraft cachets but this time in green, the first I have seen. Perhaps these are of US State Governors:
Image
John Bowden Connally, Jr. (February 27, 1917 – June 15, 1993), was an American politician. As a Democrat he served as as Secretary of the Navy under President John F. Kennedy, as the 39th Governor of Texas, and as Secretary of the Treasury under President Richard Nixon. While Governor of Texas, he was seriously wounded when President Kennedy was assassinated.

I lived in La Habra, CA from 1963-1985 and have been involved with stamps since the
middle 70's.
I am still in the general area, about an hour away from there.

The Artcraft fdc of JFK is Scott 1287 which is not the one I collect, although I do have examples of the Artcraft fdc you show & one below which has Scott 1246 & Scott 1287:

Thank you once again for thinking of me.

Please tell me what you collect so I can keep an eye out for things for you.

The covers you have are lovely, Brad. :D

Sadly, I have given up/sold most of my collections due to my health, but have retained 3 Nordic countries [general collections] and my thematic meter collections [music/cinema primarily], to keep me occupied till I pass away :D

Australia does have a lot of thematic meters issued on gastronomy [food, cakes, biscuits, sauces, flour, coffee, alcoholic drinks, canned foods, coffee and milk]. These meter franks were used during 1940-1970. If you do come across any of these, would appreciate to either trade or buy them.

What are your other interests apart from JFK FDC's and Racing Covers? There are a few Lincoln FDC's lying around. You can have them if it interests you.

Cheers!

These JFK & the racing are the main things these days. Sorry no Lincoln.

I will keep an eye out for you on those meters.

I lived in La Habra, CA from 1963-1985 and have been involved with stamps since the
middle 70's.
I am still in the general area, about an hour away from there.
Did you ever find out who had the PO Box in Cypress ??
Thank you Sheldon, I appreciate any help that I can receive.

PO Box 103 Cypress still remains a mystery at the moment.

I have now shown the postmarks from 180 different places in California, including ones from some small & obscure towns. But of the 10 biggest cities in California , I only been able to show you 7 - Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Long Beach, Oakland, & Anaheim.

The 10 biggest cities in Calfornia are:

1. Los Angeles
2. San Diego
3. San Jose
4. San Francisco
5. Fresno
6. Sacramento
7. Long Beach
8. Oakland
9. Bakersfield
10. Anaheim

Does anyone have any of the towns in red :?:

I have just shown the 3 fdcs I have for the Caroline Islands:

Koror
Ponape
Truk

Can some one confirm the names of the other post office on this Island Group that would have existed in 1964. I have seen a postmark from Yap from 1960 & suspect there would be another at Kosrae.

Am I correct with these & have I missed any.

Thank you

A package arrived today from Massachusetts covered in Christmas stamps. I didn't realize significance till I looked in side & there it was fdc postmark number 2000.

A comparison of the postmark received today & one I have had for a while showed them to be different. Tonight's addition had a larger space between the N & Y of "New York" & has no dot after the Y.

A rather pleasing milestone for my collection.

Whilst going through my Colorado JFK fdcs I noted these two had the same simple basic "rubber stamp" cachet:
Image
The towns of Arvada & Aurora.
Image
Does anyone know who may have applied this cachet :?:

Has anyone seen other fdcs with this cachet :?: I am guessing that the collector did other towns in & around Denver such as "Denver, Lakewood, Boulder, Westminster, Thornton, Littleton & Centennial.

Thank you

Brad :)

Elmer D Thompson of Isabel Kansas was a prolific collector of JFK FDCs. I have about 30 of his covers from Colorado, Kansas & Massachusetts. I can understand why collected Kansas, as well as Colorado as Isabel was to the west of Wichita & Colorado is west of Kansas but Massachusetts that one has me beaten:
Image
For Colorado I have the following covers addressed to him:

Canon City (as shown above)
Eads
Onley Springs
Ordway
Sheridan Lake
Sugar City

Has anyone seen any other JFK FDCs from Colorado addressed to Elmer Thompson.

Thank you

Brad :)
