As from the post above all future posts will have been upgraded to dpi 600 level especially after reading some of the previous comments re my attempts with default level dpi 72. It takes some time and learned experience to master new skills.

How high does it go?

I'm curious to know what the top level looks like for individual stamps...

The thing to remember about scan resolution is that it will only ever render at 72dpi on your device, screen etc.

Hence output size is the real consideration - an a4 sized image scanned at 72dpi will actually look no different than the same scanned at 300dpi, when observed side by side on your device.

What will be noticeable is if you zoom in on the higher resolution there will be far more detail.

Doesn’t matter whether cover, stamp or other.

I would imagine for most display requirements on these boards 72dpi at roughly a4 output is adequate - and will save a lot of server space :D

My Epson scanner goes up to 4800*4800 resolution, and I can change my monitor default settings from 600*800 to 1920*1080.

That’s fine if you are scanning an A4 sheet of stamps, but if you on,y scan one of them at 72dpi ….. for a single stamp to be seen as big as possible here you need to scan at a higher resolution.

Depending on whether it’s stamp or cover I use anything between 150-600, more for detail on a stamp.

Ian, if you read what I said:

“Output size is the real consideration”

Set your output size to roughly A4 at 72dpi.

Or resample your hires scan so that it is approx 72dpi at A4 size will be sufficient for the vast majority of images, such as the wonderful material Waffle has posted here to date in Odds and Sods.

But perhaps this aspect is off topic for this thread - and scanning have a thread of its own?

I must be a real nerd these days. Saw the name of this ship and immediately thought oh! That sounds familiar. Turns out she'd completed regular beats up and down the North sea on Arctic convoy duty.
Imperial War Museum wrote:HMS Belfast was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 5 August 1939 but its war service came to a premature end on 21 November, when it detonated a German magnetic mine. On Christmas Day 1942, repaired and modernised, it arrived under the command of Captain Frederick Parham to join the 10th Cruiser Squadron at Scapa Flow, in the Orkney Islands. There followed a punishing 18 months operating in support of the Arctic Convoys, delivering essential supplies to the Soviet Union.

By 1942 the Arctic Convoy route to Russia via Iceland had become one of the great naval battlegrounds of the Second World War, and HMS Belfast's first year was a demanding one. Its role included convoy screening (defending the ships in convoy) and endless duty on the Northern Patrol off Iceland, watching for attempts by enemy warships to break out into the Atlantic.

In the Arctic the weather was arguably a greater threat than the Germans, and the special Arctic clothing issued was barely adequate. Just moving around the icy decks in rough seas and darkness could be lethal for the unwary, despite the safety ropes which were provided. Veterans remember mess decks inches deep in dirty sea water and going months without mail or leave, other than brief runs ashore to the tiny island of Flotta, the site of Scapa Flow’s Fleet Cinema.
I may have a cover related to HMS Belfast - will have a hunt and share it here if you're interested.

Note how some of those men pictured have axes in hand. My guess is that they would be for chipping away at the ice before the ship became top heavy!

Excellent addition to the posts on H.M.S. Belfast, Catweazle. Yes indeed the ratings and often lower grade officerd would spend long hours chipping away at the ice that formed on the superstructure and railings lest the ship became top heavy and turned turtle. Immersion in the subzero Arctic waters gave the sailors less than 5-10 minutes of survival from hypothermia.
