This pair of fdcs created some spirited bidding at yesterday's uncatalogued auction:
Hand drawn/painted fdc for 2d green Queen Mother (28th March 1951) & 2½d brown KGVI (23rd May 1951) postmarked Mentone Vic cds on fdi.

The only indication who the cachetmaker is, is "E A" in the design which means nothing to me.

They opened for $5 & sold for $320. There are no add ons at BPS uncatalogued auctions. :D

Did you loose both winners?

Sorry to miss your event this evening, that would have been interesting. I saw this a few weeks back and thought I should visit tonight.

That said, I'll pencil in the Tuesday evening auction and, if I can make that – quite the slog over to you on the other side of the city on a week-night though – I'll let you know.

At the display meeting last night I had a chat with the purchaser of these two covers. He didn't know who the cachetmaker was either.

However later in the night he said the cachetmaker could have been Ern Allitt who was the club secretary in 1951 at the time the stamps were issued. The covers came out of the Estate of a long time Brighton member so it would be logical to presume Ern had given/sold them to him.

Perhaps more covers & more information will come to light as more research is done. :D

Yesterday I did two trips to Brighton & the first was to the Brighton Post Office to obtain the Peacock Spiders stamp & fdcs, as Brighton Vic was the National first day of issue post office.
Peacock Spiders 3 x $1.20 stamps fdc postmarked with Brighton Vic National first day of issue postmark - 9th May 2023

Peacock Spiders 3 x $1.20 stamps miniature fdc postmarked with Brighton Vic National first day of issue postmark - 9th May 2023
I made up some first day covers of my own, with the hand held version of the postmark & popped them in the mail yesterday, as Australia Post Regulations only the allow this National fdi postmark to be mail from Brighton Vic on fdi. I will post mine on thread when I received them.

I then thought this was an opportunity missed for Brighton Philatelic Society. Had the Club known of this stamp issue earlier & the Brighton postmark, the club could have ordered 350, put an address label on each & mail to members at the Brighton Vic post office yesterday.

Oh well next time. :)

Tues 9th - 7.15pm Education - My Favourite Covers with Bradford Baker

My Favourite covers segment of last night's meeting was a discussion of Essendon/Melbourne Airport postmarks on covers that I had collected mainly over the past 5 years.

Phoenix tells us that the Essendon/Melbourne Airport as follows:

1. It opened as "Aerodrome Essendon Post Office" on 1st September 1938.
2. Renamed "Essendon Airport Post Office" circa 1949.
3. Renamed "Melbourne Airport Post Office" 5th November 1956
4. Renamed "Essendon Airport Post Office" 1st September 1966
5. Closed 28th December 1984

Remember Phoenix told us that Essendon Airport was renamed Melbourne Airport on 5th November 1956 & the renamed back to Essendon Airport on 1st September 1966. Initially I thought was a typo & should have read 15th December 1956, making a temporary name change for the Melbourne Olympic Games:

WCS fdc for the Banded Ant-Eater 6d stamp postmarked Essendon Airport W6 Vic cds on fdi - 30th September 1960
I spoke to David Wood of Phoenix about these & he offered several suggestions:

1. The Essendon Airport postmark was not returned to the GPO but was retained for use as a first day cover postmark.
2. It was retained as a relief postmark in the event of loss or damage to a Melbourne Airport Postmark.
3. It was retained as a spare for times when additional staff members were required.
4. It was retained for use when name of post office reverted to Essendon Airport.
5. Postmaster didn't care and just used it anyway.

David did show me his collection that show concurrent usage of both the Melbourne & Essendon Airport postmarks in this time period. :)

For those l@@king at my covers they will have made the observation that most of the covers are first day covers.

The survival rate of fdcs seems to be higher than commercial with collectors tending to cut stamps from a commercial cover & not from a fdc.

The post office at the Essendon/Melbourne Airports is a fascinating subject which requires more research including the location of more covers & postmarks. I hope you liked what you have seen so far.

Next the report on last night's Vietnam War display where 22 members & guests attended on a cold wet wintry Melbourne night. :D
