Anyone here know SA squared circles?

Post by Greg Ioannou »

I'm trying to make sense of this Colton squared circle.

Image

Overton says the corners were removed from the Colton squared circle in 1912, and no-one seems to disagree with him. The cancel was cut down so that just one bar remained in each corner. Cool. Except that my guy seems to have one bar in each corner, and is dated two years before the corners were removed. I don't have any Colton cancels from 1910-1912, so that I can make sense of this thing. Anyone?

Hi Greg .. nice to see you around here. Keep an eye on that 10,000 post counter .. prize is good to Canada! 8)

David Wood ("PPA") is our expert postmark member ... I am sure he might have something to add to this one. :)

An interesting one, that much seems certain.

It really IS possible to snipe here, if you think about it.

Well that would only work if the CORRECT users on board tallied with what others saw at that same time.

Today we had 8 sets of eyes on it, so pretty hard to get in early and still be correct. :)

Even now, a couple of minutes after prize went off a very different set of users is on board.

Hi Greg

That is a nice find. I Have only offered 1 copy in 17 years and that was dated 1907 with all bars.

The SA study guys don't seem to have anything different to Overton, but I see no problem with your cancel and I would be inclined to take the late date for all bars as being incorrect.

(Now it would be very interesting if someone could show us a full bars copy dated later than your copy.)

Cheers

David
