Royal Mint announced the new definitive coin designs for the reign of Charles III: fauna and flora of the United Kingdom:

Pity they haven't used the opportunity to rationalise the lower values. Frankly, anything less than 10p is just a nuisance these days.

The 1p design is a hazel dormouse, 2p is a red squirrel, 5p is an oak tree leaf, 10p is a critically endangered woodland grouse (capercaillie), the 20p a puffin, and the 50p a salmon. The bi-metal £1 coin shows a pair of bees and the £2 the floral emblems of the nations of the United KIngdom.

The edge inscription of the new £2 coin was chosen by the King Charles III and reads: "In servitio omnium", which means: "In the service of all".

The coins have been minted with the 2023 year which will appear in Brilliant Uncirculated condition at a premium. The Royal Mint has not said that the 2023 coins will appear in circulation.

I remember seeing the design before now; but it didn't come up in a search on the RM Website for King Charles III - maybe they sold them all!

How quaintly, and totally wastefully, British!

We did away with 1c and 2c coins well over 30 years back. And the 5c AND 10c coins will go the same way soon. It costs 6c to make a 5c coin. CRAZY.

Everything is legally 'rounded up' - or down, to the nearest 5c here, and have been for over 30 years. Saves the country and business an absolute fortune in not messing about with worthless copper shrapnel.

Canada also ditched the 1c coin a decade back and their 5c is also doomed -

The Australian Post Office has not issued 1c or 2c stamps for the same period.


The two cent coin was first introduced with decimal currency on 14 February 1966. The original reverse design of the frill-necked lizard has not been changed since the introduction.

Two cent coins were produced by the Royal Australian Mint, the Royal Mint Melbourne branch, the Royal Mint Perth branch, and the Royal Mint, Llantrisant. The two cent coin was the last circulating coin for Australia struck outside the Royal Australian Mint.

The cessation of issue of one and two cent coins was announced by the Treasurer in his Budget Speech of 21 August 1990. The decision was based on the loss of real purchasing power through inflation and the cost of minting of these coins. The accompanying Press Release noted that

"…1c and 2c coins will continue to be legal tender: they can still be used to purchase goods and can be deposited with financial institutions in the normal manner."

Both coins were withdrawn from circulation commencing in February 1992.

Typical British 'head in the sand' Ostrich response. 'Logic' and common sense never is the big winner over there, in any scenario.

They cost way more to make than the face value. Total stupidity really. Costing business there mega millions of quid a year, needlessly handling and counting these fishing sinkers.

Why not bring back Farthings while you are lost in space?

Weren't some of the 1c and 2c coins melted down and used for the "bronze" medals at the 2000 Olympic Games?
