Hi and thank you for including me in this forum. I have a collection that has been added to each generation that I was bequeathed with as a (rather compliant) child - that said, I am most fascinated by the historical story they tell. I live in Melbourne (Australia), but my parents came here when I was 10 months old in the '60s: my father was born in S.Africa of English and Lithuanian descent, and my mother was born in Israel of Polish descent. Consequently the stamps that interest me are the countries of their lineage.

Like many I started collecting when I was young, 60 years ago now, wow, I can't believe I just typed that! Life got busy and the collection gathered dust in a closet for several decades. Having just retired I picked it back up and can't believe how much I am enjoying just getting reconnected to collecting again. I collect any and all world-wide postage stamps. I have about 45,000, only 950,000 to go! Actually, I have 2 areas I'm focused on, ASFE (about 2/3rd's complete) and every regular issue of 1956.

Hi- New to Stampboards. Just inherited a massive collection from my grandfather who I recall spent countless thousands of hours at his desk working on his collection when I was a kid. I'm slowly going through the books to begin understanding what they're all about. Cheers and thank you in advance for answering my inevitable dumb questions.

Hi Everyone

Post by neilmac63 »

Hey folks, nice to join the forum.

I am a collector of all NZ stamps. I have a complete simplified MUH collection, but actually specialise in Chalons, Pigeongrams and Postage Dues (both mint and used on cover). I have a reference collection of each and am always looking to add or improve my collections. If you have any pigeon grams you want to move then please don't hesitate to reach out! :D

I have been collecting for 50 years+ and focus on MUH

Outside of stamps I am a keen photographer, golfer, fly fisherman and love wine. Any wine recommendations gratefully received!

Below one of my favourite stamps - the Christchurch Exhibition Penny Claret. Two fun facts for you on the Penny Claret. (1) It was actually printed first (4,000 sheets of them), but the powers that were decided the shade was too dark, so they kept 14 sheets on file, sent one to the Postmaster General, and one to the Exhibition authorities for reference. The rest were destroyed.
Penny Claret.jpg
The exhibition authorities mistakenly included theirs with the 1d vermillion stock at the exhibition Post Office and that's how it was sold off. (2) The perforators were paid by the sheet, and so to earn more for less effort they perforated multiple sheets at once. This had the effect of pulling the paper out of alignment and thus the poor perfs - but not on all sheets. Looks like the authorities kept most of the poor ones of the Penny Claret though doesn't it!

The below copy was presented to an ex Governor General, Brigadier Bernard Edward Fergusson, Baron Ballantrae, KT, GCMG, GCVO, DSO, OBE in a complete collection of NZ stamps on his retirement from the role in 1967. This was Government practice for GG and Postmasters until the NZ Post archives were given to Te Papa The Museum of NZ in 1992 when the practice ceased.

Glad to be here ,

I am getting back into stamp collecting after a decade-long hiatus. I intend to collect mint USA singles and souvenir sheets, this time from about Scott 614 to Scott 1612.

I also enjoy reading about all aspects of philately.

Thank you.

Hello, my name is Nigel, and I've taken on the task of overseeing a stamp collection that my dad meticulously assembled over the span of 80 years. It's a significant responsibility, and I'm eager to delve into the collection to understand what he gathered and the reasons behind each choice. Additionally, I'm excited to share some of the remarkable pieces my dad collected. As a newcomer to this communication format, I look forward to actively participating in this forum.

I collect and blog on Forgeries/Fakes/Reprints of mainly pre 1930 stamps.

I have over 30M+ of my own and an image listing of at least that many more.

Over 1000 books on the subject (all digitized) and over 1million pages of newsletters and articles.

The result of being at this some 40 years. Pretty well anything on N. & S. America & Europe but very little on Pacific countries.

That sums up my interests :D

WELCOME TO ALL STAMP FOLKS!

Please add a post below on this thread to INTRODUCE yourself to the other members here. :D

Glad you chose to join our friendly and sharing and VERY knowledgeable Community. :D

We have some very well known and highly respected dealers AND leading collectors among our fast growing group, of some 27,000 different members, from over 170 different countries, and WHATEVER your interests or questions, someone will be able to assist.

To start with myself, as the board founder and owner, I am one of Sydney's largest stamp dealers, and have the largest stamp website in the Southern Hemisphere - with well over 300 sub-pages, and about 10 million visitors:

https://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html

I have written extensively on stamps, and my pieces have been published regularly in "Linn's Stamp News" in the USA, "Stamp News Australia", "The Philatelic Exporter" in the UK, etc - and a 40 year detailed library of them is here:

https://www.stampboards.com/images/glenstephens/column.html

I am one of the largest posters ever (with over 30,000 posts) on a travel board I visit a lot, and could see no reason why a stamp collecting board would not also get a decent amount of interest if a few folks starting using it, and if usage crept up.

That board started with just one member, and is now approaching 350,000 registered users. I was an early member there (June 2000) and have seen it grow and grow and grow.

We started here from one post and one member on April 1, 2007 - and by August, 2023, had near 11 MILLION posts and a fast growing member list from all corners of the globe - 170 different countries - and around 27,000 members who have started near 100,000 topics. We get MILLIONS of hits a month, mostly from google links to here for things they search for.

You need to select AFTER you register, a personal Avatar - or picture to go under your handle, as all others have done below as you can see around you. Or the "Avatar Fairy" might do one, if you ask her nicely. :)

You do that by going to your "Profile" - details of how to load one is here:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=67

In the meantime anyone STAMP MINDED who does stumble across this site please make yourself known if you'd like to, and start any STAMP related threads you want in the many other Forums.

Whether buying or selling or trading - or just promoting your Stamp Club in the FREE forum set aside for that.

And please add your intro to this thread here. Just click "REPLY" and start typing.

But do not start any separate newbie threads in THIS forum please, or we will have 500 "Hi There!" threads with just 1 or 2 posts!

As you can see each poster below has in general a different colour ebay type "Star" under their user handle denoting their posting level here. The more you post, the higher the star level you earn. :)

No-one wants to be stuck on a Yellow Star single post "Total Newbie" level denoting just one post, so please wander around and add a few posts and your Star Level will automatically advance.

The perfect thread to try your posting skill out on is this one - THE most popular forum around here by a LONG way:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=85520

You need to know NOTHING about stamps to join in that one! 8)

And as you can see below, stamp photos and your personal photo avatars can be loaded onto here readily - and quickly. In any thread - full info on how to do that, and many other answers to new member questions are in Brummie's helpful thread here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40010

Remember you are ANONYMOUS on this board if you wish to be. No-one can see or harvest your email address. You communicate privately between members initially if you need to, by using the board software and "email" icon.

And you can load your own personal photos, or see family photos of many of those posting around you here. There are many 100s of these here - we are truly a friendly little internet Community here:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=54206

THIS one thread alone is about 30,000 messages or 'posts' long - see that long string of little blue page numbers lower right of page you can click on! And has had WAY over a MILLION page views.

Finally for ALL new members - you and all others agreed to abide by "The Rules" when signing up here - please read them over below, and they will explain much of what happens on this board:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=2556
Again, a very warm WELCOME to you all!!

And for those of you from less well known countries, PLEASE make a post to our thread -

I am in awe of the Info available here by word-of-mouth and it's integrity.

Being a fresh-ish newbie (72 yrs young/old; haven't touched a stamp for 60+ years now), this site is manna-from-heaven!!

Still determining what and how to collect.
Steiner pages look really useful; love Palo and/or Mystic but being of an addictive-personality type(cost would be highly prohibitive), probably will go Globally; say 1840 to 1940; hinged in general except for stamps of a yet to be determined value.

Between "www.stampboards.com/" and "bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/", I intend wallowing in these Earthly-Elysiums!

Hooroo

PS
I'll be reading you!

Hello bobhill1151.

Searching for friendly stamp clubs in Sydney NSW? You might find these links helpful:
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=9055
https://www.facebook.com/nswphilas/
.
Attending a club several times as a visitor is a good idea. That way you can judge whether the style of meetings and the usual attendees suit your interests and person preferences. Different clubs have their own style and character, so it's a good idea to visit several, and perhaps choose a couple to join, based on your experiences over several months.

In general, being a regular member of at least one club helps you enjoy the social dimensions of stamp collecting. You will learn a lot from members' displays, even when they are showing collecting areas that are outside your current collecting activity. Knowledge about methods of display, levels of specialisation, technical knowledge, varieties of collecting styles and interests, and much more, will all be picked up as time goes by. Those who don't participate in club meetings are truly missing out on the social dimensions of our hobby, and missing out on the simplest way to deepen their knowledge about the hobby.

Hi all,

I'm Dries from Belgium, but with a special bond with Uganda since my girlfriend is Ugandan :) So I'm especially looking for Ugandan stamps.

Feel free to contact me if you know collectors or has information about it!

Many thanks

HeyHey Philately Friends!

I have a few projects brewing!

Running a fb group called ‘Postcard Lovers Create Collaborative Covers’ or #plccc

Active on Instagram for this hobby as @shescreams.postcard

Located in Canada and stumbled onto this site while trying to find ANY kind of current resource for Canadian Pictorial Cancels beyond the very limited Canada Post list. (Before I really dive in to start my own)

I also travel a fair amount, and swap lots of postcards with fun new/vintage stamps so I’m pretty involved in those communities too… on several platforms.

Postcrossing id is the same as here: shescreams

Hello all, many thanks for allowing me to join your forum.

I'm not a philatelist per se, but I was heavily involved in postal automation and innovation in Australia back in the 90's. Counter printed stamps, airmail stickers, inkjet printing, sorting equipment etc.

I was having a clean out and wondered if any of my old bits and bobs remaining from over the years held any interest (or value). I'll post separately, but in the meantime, thanks for having me aboard!

Good evening, my name - Kevin JONES, Welsh British, but have been living in France since 1978. Amateur collector of mostly classics and up to 1940, mostly European. Got burgled about 10 years ago, my worthless kid's collection was stolen, so I decided to build a new one with a little more than my boyhood pocket money budget... and caught the bug. Early days ignorance has given way to a more perspicacious and pragmatic approach, and I have also been lucky once or twice. i wish all a happy day, klj
