US Mint Stamps sheets, 4 albums, 480 sheets - what price should I ask?

Post by newstampdude »

Hello, I have 4 albums including 480 mint US sheets from my father's collection. I want to sell these and there is $3700 in face value.

They are beautifully stored and well maintained. What would be a good asking price on ebay or craigslist, with an "or best offer" (OBO) suffix - thus I would consider a lower offer?

Any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

The USA Discount postage market has crashed totally in USA due to the endless billions of Chinese fakes in recent years. Sell them FAST before it drops even more.

Some Bunny on Craigslist might pay more than a savvy buyer.

Anything above $US2000 in your hand will be doing well in today's collapsing market.

US post rates are soaring regularly. Now 66c, and 70c will be next. GENUINE 'Forever' stamps have proved a better investment than Gold!

Business houses do not want to mess with multiple 15c, 20c, 22c, and 32c stamps etc to mail a standard letter. Time is money. :!:

Sell these FAST before the 70c rate is a reality.

Check the 2001 Porky Pig for no die cut panes.

Also the 1994 Legends of the West, This sheet shown is the reissued one, but if you have two, check the Bill Pickett stamp.

Most of the panes sell well by me on Delcampe, in fact all gone, but this is one by one at Retail at about face+30-50%. Moving them as a bulk lot will surely put them into the cheap postage category.

However I would Cherry pick the better items. You do need to Look at a Scott catalogue, or at the very least check the eBay price ranges, otherwise you will leave money behind !

You could check stamp dealers like, Markest.com to see if you have anything that's on their buylist. Occasionally he pays over face value for things he's looking for. But about 50% for bulk stuff.
I once found a stamp in my collection that was worth more than the glassine I stored it in.

If you are looking to sell as a lot, then stop putting more time into it !.

The value from Glen above is spot on. You will not alter it by dissecting the collection.

If you do want to put more time into it, then breaking it up and selling at Retail is the alternative.

That will take time, the best sheets will sell out quickly, then the standard sheets, then you will be left with the plain sheets that are worth 40-50% of face at best. Because the values are small and it requires too much time and effort to use them for Mailing.

This is going to take you Time and Effort, plus the Costs involved, Final Value fees, Listing fees, Paypal fees, which unless you have some Selling Track record is going to take a long time.

If I had that lot and was breaking it up, I would expect "Money Back" from the better sheets in 3 months, and anything else would be my Margin after this over a few years. My approach is different than Mainstream Dealers, as I am not under any pressure to make the Sales and my TIME is my own.

Show here some more good images of the Collection, you will get a good idea of its Trade resale value, you will then have the knowledge to take them to a Dealer and get the Fair Cash in your hand. (That is my suggestion to you) :)

There is no way I would sell these separately, I am selling this collection as a whole. I can send more photos, despite their limited quality, later today.

$3,700 is a lot of postage to shift in one go.

I realize you dont want to waste time breaking it all down, it rather limits your customer base to mostly dealers, who will offer you a much lower % of face as then they have to do the work of breaking it down and shifting it.

I was able to sell them at 50% face, which I am fine with. I needed to move on.

A wise decision in my opinion, balancing return with time (and emotion!) spent.
