Sigh, that's going to be a complication due to the CloudFlare setup. Luckily, I can fix it, just need to tweak the caching settings correctly. Standby.

Okay, let's try that...

For the record, this is why I delayed setting up CloudFlare for so long. Enabling it is easy; getting it to work without bugs isn't so easy.

Superb Yuri .. more beer and pizza monies just sent from me - little do most members know you have spent absolutely endless frustrating hours on this mess behind the scenes, often battling into the very early hours, just in the past weeks alone.

Please add your PayPal thanks to Yuri - we all need to, or this board would not be visible now - that's a FACT. Think of it as your tiny 'subscription fee' to this great board!

Wrestling endlessly with our suddenly flakey server host inmotion, and adding and tweaking all this Cloudflare software to the back end here, and layers of anti DDOS and security software, to make all members' life smoother and easier and FASTER, when it is all bedded in.

The issue has been 'fixed' a dozen times at server end they tell us, and then goes pear shape in a day. And we start the battle all over again with them.

We have had a brilliant up time record for 3 years now.

I too was seeing that issue, and it was going in loops. And it was driving me LOOPY!

Seems like getting 'reinitialised' with Cloudflare works to solve this.

I just typed in my password, and clicked the 'REMEMBER ME' button, and touch wood, all running very smoothly for the past day.

Great work from Marshall Rusty - Yuriy once again. 8-)

Board seems super fast to me today. :!:

Most recent downtime was caused by an artifact from the fix that was implemented a few days ago. This has now been fixed and shouldn't happen again.

Overall, the server is running incredibly better compared to a couple days ago; hopefully you're also feeling that in terms of pageload times. Fingers crossed, we're on the tail end of this bizarre episode.

EDIT: Bots took the site down. I have increased CloudFlare's mitigation measures here; hopefully that doesn't cause unintended consequences :?

I have now implemented further stability hardening and will be immediately notified of downtime.

Fingers crossed.

EDIT: Testing to make sure it works correctly. This unfortunately requires me to break the site (to see if it kicks it back on automatically), so there will be slight instability for the next 15 minutes or so.

Working ok this morning.

I keep the site open on a tab all the time. This morning after I refreshed by hitting ‘my posts’ it showed 1 Notification. So the cookies are working.

But when I clicked the notification, I had to sign in before I could see the post!

Should be ok now, though, unless there are any further technical resets.

Thanks!

This is unfortunately due to the CloudFlare setup. It is currently mostly working, and there's a 99% chance I can polish out those last few issues. I've been focusing on the far more pressing uptime problems, but the remaining login bugs will be next!

It's not the most elegant (or optimistic!) solution, but now if the server encounters a number of error states, it can reset the relevant services automatically. There are also detailed logs on what actually happened. And I get an email notification.

Thanks Yuriy. I wasn't complaining, just alerting to a situation - and one that the user can easily resolve, especially if they have a password manager!

No problem at all. I can't fix stuff unless I know it's broken, so thanks for the reports!

So the bad news is, everyone is going to have to log in again.

The good news is, I think I've fixed the login problem, so it should be back to normal.

Exactly Brad. 8-)

To do a one time reset, to get fully integrated into the new Cloudflare software layer, that has just been installed for extra security and uptime stability, this is all that seems needed, to those who read. :!: :!:

To repeat for all - clear your cache, log out of stampboards totally, and then log back in, and type in your handle, and type in your password, and click the 'REMEMBER ME' button.

Job done, it seems now. 8-)

Top marks to Yuriy for the truly endless hours behind the scenes these past few weeks, and endless communications with our server hosts in the USA, unseen by all except he and I .. board is flying along at super speed for the past day, much faster than usual, and zero outages or hassles. 8-)

Send him a Pizza and a few beers now please folks. This robust and ever upgraded tech backup does not happen by voodoo magic.

As to the vague, totally non specified, alleged 'image loading issues' - none I have seen, or anything resembling them, since Yury's last update. And I post more images here than anyone.

Another "for information" screenshot.

Earlier today I couldn't log in to Stampboards, and got this screen, previously reported by norvic (27 Nov):

Screenshot 2023-12-02 at 7.20.02 pm.png
.
I went to other online links and did things there for some time. When I came back to Stampboards, login was working, and I made sure to select "remember me" when logging in — that has been working well for me over the past 24hrs or more.

/RogerE 🦉

Footnote: I did send a PayPal 'thank you' to Yuriy recently (23 Nov), anticipating a good fix:

As we're now connecting through CloudFlare, whenever the server is down (for any reason), you will get that CloudFlare failure page.

That's normal. Although, of course, the server shouldn't be down, so you shouldn't be seeing that page often.

Thanks for your patience.

Sigh, to repeat AGAIN what Yuriy just posted on this very thread, to save more folks stating the bleeding obvious to all.

As those who are reading will have absorbed, we now know PRECISELY to the second when any minor outages occur. It is not a news flash. No cheer squad breathlessly reporting them here is needed, with screen shots. Some hiccups last only a minute or two only our logs show. We are onto this. :!: :!: :!:

I got a novel denial of service page today, when I was in the middle of building a post.
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=104205&start=113
It continued for quite a long time, so I exited and went to work on other projects.

Here is a screenshot, for general information.

Footnote. (I know Glen doesn't like us to post these images, because Yuriy gets automatic notifications of the problems, but posting them here does serve the useful purpose of reassuring others that it's a server problem and not a glitch with their own software. Those of us of an elderly persuasion are not always as tech-savvy and tech-confident as the younger ones.)

Roger, yes Yuriy and I did see this MANY hours back, we were alerted in minutes, and it was fixed fast by Yuriy, as members will realise - 99.99% of whom it did not affect.

Clearly nothing to do with member computers, and I am sure no-one thought it was. First tiny incident for a week or so of very impressive reliability. Nothing new here. :!:

Australia Post website is often down or flakey - and they have 100 full time techies. 8-)

My monitor suggests that stability has been pretty good over the past few days. Has this been your experience as well?

Also, you folks can always send bug/issue/experience reports to me by email if you prefer not to post them in public. If something's not working correctly, I want to know. I may not be able to fix it immediately, but at least it'll go on the to-do list.

The onboard search box at top right of each page etc, has issues now and again as we know, that Yuriy rectifies.

HOWEVER Yuriy has also loaded a powerful site specific SEARCH at the base of each page, under the large stampboards logo, which manages to find most things, as a very handy backup.

That works very well for many things. Indeed for phrases and multi-word searches is always best :!:

Following suggestion, I restarted, cleared cookies, then restarted again.

This screenshot shows that latest information I get from "Notifications" — it clearly doesn't look up-to-date like Glen's image. I don't get any count attached to "Notifications", and I can't scroll down in its list — just see the four-and-a-half items shown in the screen shot.

That's an alternative, thanks Ubobo.R.O., but doesn't suit my normal method of replying when others have posted in threads I usually follow.

Normal service restored :D

It turns out that tweaking once again has returned my "Notifications" to its proper behaviour, so all is well again. However, I have no idea what went wrong, and which lucky tweak has now restored it :o

This screenshot shows that latest information I get from "Notifications" — it clearly doesn't look up-to-date like Glen's image.

So you show us a December 25 notification despite claiming you had received none since Dec 24 and that mine is more 'up to date' than yours.

I am loath to make the bog obvious point that you MUST tick the 'Notify Me' box for each thread you claim to need advices for. EVERY time. But moving on ......

And like Terry urges, I'd turn mine off if I could figure out how to, no need whatever for it for regular users - I never look at mine (except to satisfy myself it was working based on your claim) - only look at the 'VIEW NEW POSTS' button top right. In which case, you'll see any threads you are following as you are on board each day. :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Not sure if that was sympathetic — certainly shed no light on the problem.
But a warning: I have just had my latest birthday ;)

There seems to be a problem with Google's indexing of Stampbords.com. (Rather than start a new thread this seemed appropriate in case it is something Yuriy can affect.)

If I use the Google search box at the foot of the page it has, for a week or more, been returning just one result or none.

Even when the subject is a common one, such as Queensland, only one result.

I tried it from google.co.uk advanced search limiting the domain to Stampbords.com and again there was just one result, and that wasn't the most obvious.
Google search result for Queensland
Google search result for Queensland
This is the thread that is found Australia stamp cancels and postmarks that have you beaten! and it landed on page 48.

Whilst the result is sometimes useful it is difficult to find some search terms - I was looking for GB VIctorian manuscript price marks: 1, 2, 4 in red or black for example. Very difficult to search for anyway.

I hope everybody else is having the same experience!

Global Admin wrote: 19 Dec 2023 11:18 The onboard search box at top right of each page etc, has issues now and again as we know, that Yuriy rectifies.

HOWEVER Yuriy has also loaded a powerful site specific SEARCH at the base of each page, under the large stampboards logo, which manages to find most things, as a very handy backup.

That works very well for many things. Indeed for phrases and multi-word searches is always best :!:

But not any longer it appears?

Roger = RogerE

The guests shouldn't be "bots" because Yuri locked them out when the Board was bombarded by 1000s of them all at once causing the Board to overload & stop. This is why the search function at the bottom of the page doesn't work & why we should use the search function at the top right of the page.
It would have saved a lot of time last week if that had been publicised.

Maybe Yuriy needs a few beers from those to whom one powerful search function is not up to their super exacting standards, on their totally FREE subscription here, to focus his attention?

Every phpBB board on this planet - 10s of millions of them literally, all function perfectly well on that basis of using the standard default search version, which here has been boosted up enormously in grunt and reliability, over the basic package. Not noted or mentioned or acknowledged of course by those above, for whom it does not suit. :!:

I have acknowledged Yuriy's good work publicly and privately and contributed to the Pizza fund.

The point is that for many years we have been urged - as an extra facility - to try the Google search at the foot of the page which you arranged to have there (maybe paid for?) and it has been very useful. Using boolean searches is very useful.

Likewise you have stressed the need for captions on images "so that the Google bot can find them for external searchers".

Screenshot 2024-05-10 at 13.05.44.png
All I wrote was that it would have been nice to have been told that using that box at the foot of the page would no longer produce reliable results. Had I known that I would not (a) have emailed Yuriy directly, and (b) raised the point on the thread - which then wasn't answered here.

We all know and acknowledge - though maybe not often enough - how useful this forum is. We have been encouraged to report when something is not working in the way it has for years.

Well, that's likely to happen less now.
