Online App: Great Britain & Ireland Numeral Postmarks 1844 - 1906

Post by Rog »

I have made an online web app that helps with identifying numerals and offices for the Great Britain and Ireland 1844 - 1906 cancellations. For example, this kind of cancel for Dumbarton:
GB QV Dumbarton 110 Postmark
GB QV Dumbarton 110 Postmark
So far there are three lists, England & Wales, Ireland and Scotland. These can be viewed by clicking the shapes that relate to the shape of the cancellation - oval for England & Wales, diamond for Ireland and rectangle for Scotland.

You can search and filter the lists by typing into the search box. Either a numeral or an office name. It's a fuzzy search, so it will list similar results too - this may help for partials.

The 'Listed' column is the first listing of the cancel. I still have to transcribe many of these from Whitworth.

Scotland has several images (indicated by the camera icon) listed that I have taken from this topic we have here:

Credit is given for the images I have used.

For any questions and feedback please post here :)

Also, thanks to CMJ for the list of Ireland numbers and offices.

And to Allanswood for the list of Scotland found in that existing sharing topic I mentioned above.

Looks good, and easy to use.

Are you planning to include English duplexes - often only the barred-numeral is on loose stamps, but on cover the whole would be shown.

Thanks Ian :)

I'll expect to include any of those within the timeframe.

Where I have a problem at the moment, is what to do for singular ones that share the same number. So far I have been putting those to one side. I still have to transcribe many of the office's first listed dates from Whitworth or Brumell (which I need to order). Hopefully with some dating evidence I can figure those ones out better as I go along. Covers of course being more useful than a single stamp.

I'm only up to page 6 on our topic and so far it's all been Scottish examples - later I will look at the big 100 page plus postmark database we have.

And there is also London to transcribe.

I just wanted to get it out there to see if it's useful.

Have you looked on the GBPS website? While many of the downloads are members-only, the Parmenter/Luckly/Smith publications are free to download.

Barred Numeral Cancellations of England and Wales

"These files comprise the text of Barred Numeral Cancellations of England and Wales by John Parmenter, David Luckly, and Ken Smith, with Prof. Cedric Prys-Roberts (Welsh section) – a comprehensive listing of these postmarks that provides the most detailed treatment available concerning which handstamps and codes were used when, revised and updated for this 2021 listing. All files include a short 4 page introduction."

And this page, has a tabular summary which might be useful, both in numerical and county order.

Rog,

Just noticed this thread. Great work in compiling the listings.

With regard to Ireland, you would do well to consult the book "Irish Diamonds" by SD Challis and published by the Stuart Rossiter Trust. It will answer many of your questions and provides much additional information.

For example you do not list,
478 Kilsheelan
480 Knocknacoppul
485 Limerick Junction also allocated at a later date 514 (which you list)

Not a numeral cancellation but issued after 1906
565 Lifford.

Thanks for that.

Yes, it's still a work in progress, but I have not had much time to add to it recently. I have some other sources to add too. There's still a way to go.

A quick update, I couldn't sleep so I worked on this.

More first-listing dates were added to England & Wales.

Fixed a bug with leading zeros - places like Pensford were being shown as a single digit number 1 instead of 001. They are now displayed correctly and work properly with the search filter.

Now featuring the London numerals. Select the circle to list and search those.

Data came from Whitworth and from the GBPS records.
