'Central Bus Station' parcel stamp: which country/state issued them?

We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

'Central Bus Station' parcel stamp: which country/state issued them?

Post by adam78 »

This was all by its lonesome in a collection of otherwise NZ bus parcel stamps, but I don't think it is from NZ. I'm sure I'd have heard of it by now if it was, or seen another example from somewhere as important as "Central Bus Station"

Does anyone recognise it as being from somewhere else, like Australia or GB?

Thanks
Adam.

Obviously an "English-only" country, ie. Oz, NZ, Canada, USA. If it were South Africa they'd add Afrikaans to it right. Here in Hong Kong the business district is called "Central", buses and trams were the only transport until the subway opened in 1978, but obviously the ticket would be bilingual with Chinese then.

Furthermore, it says "station", not "terminus", which is the more British/formal term used here. Whereas back in North America we always said 'bus station'.
Collecting Mongolia; Thailand; Indo-China; Mourning Covers; OHMS.

It is definitely not Sydney and while I cannot be certain about all of Australia I don't believe there is such a place here.

We are tending to copy USA terms but most major bus locations are still called bus terminals or bus depots. Funny when we have railway stations and parking stations.

This info just to hand.

The Central Bus Station you have is from South Australia the
san-serif font should be 26-27mm in length this 20c comes on 4 different
colours of paper.

Google Australia search for Central Bus Station turned up Adelaide as the most prominent hit so I was leaning towards that.

Yes Adam, Adelaide was always in the search results when I looked but I couldn't find an image to confirm, so, no help there.

So now we know! Thanks for getting back with the information.

I can assure you all that there are more than 4 coloured papers.

I have an extensive collection of these and there are white, yellow pale blue pale green mid green orange, pink and light brown coloured papers and ink colours of red, green and purple.

There are also cash register labels. The denominations issued that I have are 20c 30c, 35c, 40c, 45c, 50c, 55c, $1 and $2 in two different type fonts. They were printed in books of 100, 20 strips of 5, and there was no pattern to the colour combinations, they were printed on whatever paper was available.

Maxwell Hayes wrote an extensive article on them in Australian Stamp News, February 1982, page 150.

Greetings

Bill Hornadge published a book entitled " Local Stamps of Australia" in 1982

This includes listings of these stamps: 11 values in total

These are on 8 different coloured papers.

Example have " Central Bus Station" into formats : with / without serifs

To date, I have identified 40 different cobinations across the values, but suspect there are many more.

A listing from "Pres" would be very helpful

Best wishes

Greetings

This lone stamp is from Adelaide, South Australia.

Issued after 1966, but thought to be late 1970's or early 1980's

Best wishes

I attach the two main references to these stamps that I'm aware of. Bill Hornadge's section in the Local Stamps of Australia largely duplicates Hayes' article.
