My name is John and I have been collecting off and on for the last 50+ years. I started collecting US but expanded to worldwide when people started giving me stamps and covers.

I used to go to Memphex regularly but had to stop for a period due to work and passing of a fellow stamp collector friend that used to go with me. I used to travel to stamp shows and do mail auctions back in the day.

I have traveled to book stores, thrift shops whatever and have about a 50/50 rate of finding anything in my area. Flea markets are nothing but knock offs and not flea markets around here anymore or just quit operating completely.

So have been doing estate auctions local and online looking for the elusive one of kind stamps that we all like to fill a hole.

Of course within reason and common sense.

Reason: Added paragraphs and spacing and “air” – always a superb idea on Bulletin Boards! Use the "PREVIEW" button folks. It is there for a GOOD reason.

Welcome to John = persistence in Dyersburg, Tennessee, USA.

Interesting observations about the changing "local sales" environment. No doubt, the impact of the Internet, and online sites like eBay, have wrought the most noticeable changes on stamp sales since the turn of this century.

Those who don't manage to adapt are increasingly isolated...

Image

So DO wander around, and add a few posts. I am amazed how many members sign up, make just one Welcome post in this thread, and we never see them post again.

If all members did that, we'd only have 27,000 posts over our past 19 years - not our over 11 MILLION messages and over TWO MILLION images. We are the WIKIPEDIA of stamp collecting. So please, make post #2 now, and get the “Newbie Jacket” off your back. :)

Get to just 5 posts, and you get a brand new colour member star and ranking. Same with 10 posts, and 25 posts etc - https://tinyurl.com/StarsSB

Best of all, new members can claim their choice of superb FREE stamps just by clicking this link – a superb reason to get off post #1! All details here –

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50036

And here is a great link for ALL members to bookmark - new AND old members! To have a quick look at the current hot discussions on stampboards at ANY time, simply click – https://tinyurl.com/SBDnew

https://www.stampboards.com/search.php?search_id=newposts

If you are NOT logged in, you usually cannot see that. The board moves so fast now, you'll miss NOTHING new, if you bookmark that link.

You can see “what’s hot” that day, and click immediately on the thread(s) that interest YOU most. Add a comment please to those that interest you.

We have TWO on board “Search” Engines. The one at top of page, and the VERY powerful site specific Google hosted one right at base of page.

This one single Roll Call thread, has had WAY over a 1.2 MILLION page views! Join in. :D

Please READ and act on, your recent ‘Welcome’ Email, and DO have a quick read of our simple Rules linked here below, and learn how to post images etc - it answers ALL your questions -

Not a new member but my last post was on 3/21 shortly after getting out of 30 days ICU for covid the month of 12/20. I've been on oxygen ever since and am struggling to remember this site.

I've been involved in collecting and accumulating stamps and collections for over 60 years.

Hoping to catch up again after long covid memory loss and chronic confusion for the last 4 years.

Thanks, RB

Hello everyone. I'm having a lot of problems using the Board. It has taken me 2 hours to finally figure out how to introduce myself. I am interested in Old German States stamps and that's about all!

I generally do not sell stamps, just buy them. I'm looking forward to participating in this group. Thank you for letting me join!

Hello Everyone,

Ive been collecting stamps for around 45 years and I'm known to get weak at the knees when I'm given or buy a bulk lot of Aussie Pre Decimals to sort though.

Desk is a mess, shelves are all full, and my wife rolls her eyes when I go hunting for "an old lot of Aussie stamps in a box", or "Old stamps Deceased Estates Sale".

I have a great range of 1 penny red KGV flaws which I think I can say honestly, are my favourite stamp to collect.
However I do spend a lot of time sorting old lots looking for and sometime finding interesting stamps, I will then spend endless hours researching them. :D

Don't mind dabbling in french stamps but nothing beats Aussie Pre Decimals in my book. Have a few good books and catalogs but still saving up for one on Roo's Flaws.

My Stamps: I Sell a few, give away a lot and always searching for that new missed flaw in lots that i buy.

Anyway, Thank you for adding me to the www.stampboards.com world, I'm looking forward to the learning curve on using this platform. Lots to read before my first post.

Kind Regards
Kingsley G

Hello and welcome to all the new members, from a stamp user in Wales.
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I muse on letters and stamps at correspondencefan.blogspot.co.uk. I have a forum, A World of Snail Mail. I need to collect "Welt der Briefe" stamps from Deutsche Post. I may need help to postally use RM postage stamps - does anyone want to get into letter writing?

Hello kingsley in Astonville, New South Wales, Australia.
Don't mind dabbling in French stamps but nothing beats Aussie Pre Decimals in my book. Have a few good books and catalogs but still saving up for one on Roo's Flaws.
• Good reference books are gems. It's surprising that many serious philatelists willingly spend serious money to add stamps to their collections, but hesitate to spend even relatively modest amounts on relevant reference books.

• Collectors in Australia have often included in their collections stamps from Australian Territories and from anglophone Pacific nations. But few pay attention to the French Pacific. May I invite you to potentially broaden your range of philatelic interests by browsing the Stampboards thread on French Pacific philately, at

Hello all !

I'm an old Stampboards member, but I haven't been here for so long I feel like a NEW member  ,

So I thought I'd better do a Roll Call post and introduce myself.

I pretty much like all stamps, covers, cinderellas and ephemera, and find them all interesting.

My collecting interests are Kangaroo topic stamps, covers and postcards (well basically anything with a Kangaroo on it), Australian Tourist Covers, Lenticular stamps and postcards, Lord Howe Island related philately including the LHI Zemail local courier post. Plus Pre-decimal Australian stamps and covers featuring Australian Fauna.

I think it's been about 8 years since I've looked at any stamps. They were packed away when we renovated and were never unpacked. Then more recently our house went on the market and everything went into storage.

We will move into our new place in a few weeks and hopefully I can get back into sorting out my collection. Its actually going to be fun to rediscover what I have snaffled away

Looking forward to being able to post more and chat with others about stamp collecting.

Hello and welcome back Dianna = Skippy.

Moving and/or placing belongings in storage certainly disrupts the search for some possessions. Many of us understand that from personal experience ;)
Skippy wrote:I pretty much like all stamps, covers, cinderellas and ephemera, and find them all interesting.

For your viewing pleasure, here's an example of an Australian Tourist Cover currently on eBay:

s-l1600-1.jpg
Greetings from Tamworth
Postally used cover from Tamworth, NSW to Dover Gardens, SA
Tamworth date stamp, 3 Jan 1975, with "check address" slogan
Contemporary 10c Christmas stamp, single franking
eBay item: 226069097709
.
In keeping with recent discussions about categorising covers, I'm inclined to the classify this cover as primarily "personal correspondence" (about 75% weighting) and secondarily "philatelic" (about 25% weighting). Perhaps the weighting should be even higher in the first category‽

Hi Skippy - Dianna

I remember your avatar from years ago.

The one great thing about collecting is that you can put it aside for years or even decades and then come back to it, resuming pretty much where you left off.

Welcome to Al-Moataz Billah = AlMoutaz Billah in Aleppo, Syria :D

Your Stampboards "name" and your real name are slightly different. Presumably this is a result of challenges to present Arabic script accurately in the Latin alphabet‽

We are glad to have you join us. Here is a nice Aleppo item (on eBay) for your viewing pleasure:

Aleppo, parcel tag

Just retired and retrieved from the wardrobe a childhood family stamp collection which I have not looked at for more than fifty years.

Lots of Australian,UK and Greek stamps (we lived in Greece for several years in the sixties). Dated from the late 19th century to the 1960s. The earlier stamps were collected by my father. Also about 30 random other countries.

Hello and welcome to GreybeardAU :D

The family history and memories evoked by your family stamp collection is a great starting point. Building on that will potentially add many new experiences and dimensions, while keeping those family history dimensions alive.

Hello you all,

I'm Sylvestre, I'm living in the south of France.

I love the fact that there are thousand ways to collect stamps or to give interest to philately.

I have always been loving writing and receiving letters but you all know that this habit is not that up-to-date anymore ; pity.

That's why I have tried to bring my worth 2 cents action to promote the pleasure of sending postal mail by creating the modest website http://www.snailmailsurprise.com and its Facebook page.

Many stamps collectors love to gather old covers and old stamps... So just remember that one day, items that are now considered as old ones have once been actual.

So you get it : perhaps today's covers will be the collected treasures of tomorrow. Hehe... Yes ! Why not ? So : let's carry on sending letters with nice stamps !

On http://www.snailmailsurprise.com, learn an easy way to make your next letters more original. (Have a look !)
You may find it a non-useful "tool", it's your right. But maybe the concept will give you ideas, who knows...

And just a few words more to tell you that a special snailmailsurprise.com-related book has been published ! It's a book (only in French, so far...) in which are gathered ten short stories featuring different people who, each for a personal reason, will use the snailmailsurprise service.

So please spread the word to your French-speaking collector friends ! They may like it.

Thanks a lot !

Hello,
I'm Sylvestre, I'm living in the south of France.
I love the fact that there are thousand ways to collect stamps or to give interest to philately.
Some love collecting old stamps and old covers but let's remember that there was a time when those covers which are now considered as old ones were current...
Yes, you get it : maybe some covers of today will be the ones that will be treasured in the future ! So let's never stop to send letters with nice stamps !
Sending and receiving "real, nice" letters is really great but unfortunately you all know that this habit isn't very up-to-date anymore ; what a pity.
That's why I have tried to give my contribution to the promotion of philately by creating the website http://www.snailmailsurprise.com and its Facebook page.
Please visit it and learn how easy it could be for you to make your next letters more original.
Maybe you'll find that this "tool" is not useful, or that it doesn't make sense. It's your right. But maybe it could give you ideas, too. Who knows.
Thank you for being curious.
And just a few words more to tell you that a special snailmailsurprise.com-related book was published. You can find it on amazon after having searched : "snailmailsurprise". It's a book (only in French, so far...) in which are gathered ten short stories featuring different people who, each for a personal reason, will use the snailmailsurprise service.
Please spread the word to your French-speaking friends collectors ! Thanks a lot !

Hello All,

Phalanx = Syd here.

I am from Adelaide in the great State of South Australia. I acquired a couple of old white page stockbooks from my late fathers Estate and was surprised he had accumulated stuff fom all around the world, from his various contacts.

He left me a huge stockbook of used Polish stamps...mostly worthless...but, very artistic design and nice to look at.

A couple of pages are incomplete pre-WW2 which makes the album interesting.

I suppose the reason I am here is due to another stockbook which contains Australian pre-decimals and early decimals. Scant on Roos, but a nice FU album. I have now commenced a personal project to fill the gaps and rehouse the stamps.

A couple of purchases from Glen Stephens have assisted this slow endeavour.

The more one researches certain stamps the more philately appeals! I didn't realise the BCOF imprints were scarce. I only have 2...definitely need the full set, and the Navigators, and the Harbour Bridge set etc etc.

I also really like Christmas stamps from Australia and have started a collection from the early ones.

Someone posted that ''snail mail" was decreasing in volume. Yes-I agree. Imagine having stamps from an era when mail (by Air/Ship/Camel/Boat/Concorde/Military Post/Pony etc.) was the ONLY way to do it!

In summary, possessing stamps from this era is very cool and I can foresee they will be treasured in the future.

Kind Regards to All.

Hello and welcome from North Wales.

I'm doing my best to feed Royal Mail postboxes, though do keep forgetting to take pictures of the outgoing mails with various combinations of stamps (mostly to make up international economy rate).

I should also upload pics of my incoming mails that aren't the US global forevers (unless they've got a nice slogan postmark)... Many of my penpals are happy to use commemorative stamps.
