I am new to these 2d's , but wondering if I can get some help with the plating. I think this is from plate 3 - guideline in NE corner ( maybe through SE too?). From what I can see a stronger left side compared to right. Not best example, but one of the few I have to start with. Thank you.

Re: The GB 1840 'Penny Black' stamp - Plate Number help needed please!

Post by plim8888 »

Good day everyone.

Please help me take a look at this example of GB 1840 2d Blue with red MX used on cover.

Does it look like genuine GB 1840 2d Blue truly used on this cover in 1840? Or does it look like the pair being grafted on to a cover at a later date?

If the cover is opened up and a picture of the letter side taken would the linseed oil of the MX cancellation bleeding through be enough to confirm that the 2d Blue pair are original on this cover? Or is that still not good enough?

Appreciate your help. Thanks.

BH 2d blue.jpg
This GB 2d blue plate 4 comes with an RSPL certificate stating "BH Spectacle (later print) used is genuine.

The "Spectacle variety" is supposed to have a plate flaw in the form of a scratch from eye to ear but after removing the postmark in that area I do not see a line that runs from the eye to the ear to indicate the plate flaw.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Out of curiosity - how old is the certificate? Also, can you post one with the flaw? I don’t see a trace of anything. Not knowing exact location, it looks to me that the cancel would have covered it. Possible incorrect certificate?

Certificate is May 2014

SG GB Queen Victoria specialised shows the flaw as a clear line going from the eye to the ear.

Thanks Bill

Looking at your example I think I can see a very thin line in the same place but it could be my eyes, I can not honestly say one way or the other.

Any thoughts ??

Thanks again Bill

I will take that as confirmation, would like to know how the RSPL would have seen it.

I asked on the cert year as I was curious if older if they would have had the technology to see in negative format. I see you’ve followed up with bill as to his thoughts too as to how they might have seen it. I’m viewing on iPhone as I’m traveling , but I’m looking again closely at your negative image , I think I see a scratch too.
All the best,

Afternoon All,

Just wondering if someone in the know could confirm if this stamp is a plate 4.

I’ve come to that conclusion because of the open A.

Slight ivory head appearance, if that makes a difference on this issue.

Quite a clean stamp, only a small cancel mark, which given the shaped curve could be an MX.

Any thoughts would be very welcomed and thank you in advance.

This stamp is Plate 3, AL and is cancelled by small part of a Maltese Cross

Hi W5LDY

Thank you for replying, is that plate due to the left border being stronger than the right, if so I can see it now on closer inspection.

The blue colour bleed I guess through the Two Pence is just a bit of over inking on the plate, but that aside I think the colour overall is quite good and I’d say Blue ref ES11.

Thank you again for your help.

All the best

No, it's because as you mention the A is open - but this is a plate 3 characteristic, not plate 4.

Plate 1 or 2?

The broken NW box line would lean to plate 1 but no other plate 1 attributes appear present.

Thanks!

That's because it's from plate 2.
I think the 'broken' NW corner line is due to it being damaged by its proximity to the cut edge
