The "Engraved Stamps of Australia" Die Proof Books : summary

Post by jaywalker »

"A Selection of the Engraved Stamps of the Commonwealth of Australia", by Richard Breckon.

"In 1999 Australia Post introduced the first collection of engraved (also called intaglio) stamp proofs printed from their original steel dies. A selection of the engraved stamps of the Commonwealth of Australia featured 28 proofs printed in black and housed in archival mounts. The collection was the first of its kind.

A second collection, Federation was produced in 2001, the centenary year of Federation. This collection comprised 30 proofs printed in blue. Each intaglio stamp was chosen for its relevance to the story of Australia's development as a nation.

A third collection, Royalty, was produced in 2003 to honour the fiftieth anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The collection comprised 32 proofs printed in red depicting examples of royal portrait stamps.

For the first time examples of unissued Australian stamps were included. These stamps were intended for issue and developed to the stage where dies were engraved, but the stamps were subsequently abandoned.

The latest in this series of collections (was produced in 2005 and covers) Transport and Communications. (It) contains 32 proofs printed in green, including one example of an unissued stamp (and features Australian and territories' stamps depicting transport and communications)".

(Source: Transport & Communication: A Selection of the Engraved Stamps of the Commonwealth of Australia (2005), p 4 )

All books came with slip covers.

Die Proofs were produced "actual size", and were cut to slightly larger than stamp size for insertion in the mounts in the books. They are listed in The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue as "posthumous proofs".

The die proofs were printed from dies by Avon Graphics in Melbourne.

Unlike Replica Cards (which had text on the rear of each die proof), the die proofs produced for this series of books had no text on the rear of the proof.

The 1999 volume had "tissue paper"- like interleaves.

The 1999 and 2003 volumes had gold-coloured metallic corners. The 2001 volume had silver-coloured metallic corners.

Quite superb books Jim .. a great idea to list the contents here for posterity.

I keep stock of them all, and the best seller by far is the grey Volume #1 that I just listed as a Special for $A295 on my Rarity Page. (Stock 428YT) The Red and Blue are $A400 each, the Green "Transport" being near unobtainable is $A550. (Stock 428YR/428YU/428YX) Or all 3 for $A1200.

Semi-opaque interleaved pages with designs on them. Real heavyweight grade archival weight paper. Varnished glazed paper for effect in parts. The photos really do not begin to convey the lavishness and class of this book. My guess is the book and slipcase cost well over $100 to make. Shows masses of issued designs and superlative background info. Similar in size to a “Leather” PO Year Book.

Book #1 contains 28 different Official correct size recess printed DIE PROOFS in black from the original dies. From 1913 1d Engraved KGV to 1965 Anzac. Inc most early commems - like Harbour Bridge, Jubilee, Canberra, Hermes, Sturt, Sesquicentenary etc. Also high value Definitives like the £1 Robes and Arms, 7/6d Cook &c. All this at around $10 an official Die Proof! And NOT obtainable any other way than via this book.

The Die Proofs sold separately generally realise great prices when offered separately. The KGV 1d Engraved, or £1 Robes I have seen bring $50 to $100 each on their own when sold separately as official PO issued Die Proofs. The 1939 5/- GUBA Airmail Die Proof is a $100 proof on its own.

A magnificent book for ANY collector to own. Lavish production and contents and luxury "feel" .... EVERY person - dealer or collector - who has seen it here on the office desk picked it up and said "WOW"!

Glen,

Do you have further copies of books 2,3 and 4?

I know shipping to the UK will be horrendous, but thought I would enquire.

Thanks,
