Switzerland 1918 Kriegswirtschaft overprint - what is this?

Post by bowulf »

Can some one tell me what this set is and if it is catalogued? I cannot find it anywhere, but I find the Kriegswirtschaft as line overprint. Was this set ever issued?

bowulf,

I believe that these are proofs from 1918 of the, "Industrielle Kriegswirtschaft" overprint.

Thanks, yes I thought they might be proofs. Do you know if they're listed in any catalogue?

Allan,

I am not aware of any catalogues listing these proofs.

Maybe they are listed or there is a note about them in Zumstein???

Someone that has a copy of Zumstein might be able to answer that.

I checked my Zumstein.

Could only find the set with the overprint in line format. No note on proofs.

Some of these stamps are in the "Rarest 20th century" stamps cathegory.
Tons of fakes and forgeries exist, many already made around the same time the real stamps were issued. The 71/2 Rappen stamp with thin overprint is the most faked Swiss stamp.

The production of these stamps is well documented, and neither proofs nor round overprints are ever mentioned. Making proofs with a different overprint was absolutely pointless, as the stamps are real, the only thing to "prove" would have been the overprints.

So with 99.9% certainty, these are fake overprints.

There are currently two Swiss experts that can examine these stamps.
