Getting ready for flying.
G-AEPA
G-AEPA
I found a much smaller version of this photo in my mother's collection. From the registration, one internet record has it as a Luton A3 Minor, built by Luton Aircraft Ltd of Gerrards Cross, but a group of people on a forum identify it as a General Aircraft Monospar ST-25 Universal.

in March 1938 was owned first by JAM Henderson at Heston and then sold to HS Ashworth at Blackpool. The
Blackpool Flying School was the last pre-war owner before the aircraft was impressed into the RAF as X9372
in March 1940. It was struck off RAF charge in 1944.

The Universal was powered by two 95 hp Pobjoy Niagara III radial engines and cruised at 115 mph.

This ties in with the other photos: I think it was doing pleasure flights over Blackpool in 1939.

My understanding is that it went to Canada during WW2 and was struck-off there.

USA Airmail Transport Series:
US Airmail 1941- 1944.jpg
US Airmail stamps 1941-44 (Scott #C25-31) 6c, 8c, 10c, 15c, 20c, 30c & 50c Transport Planes

One of the more interesting war-time stamps known as the "Transport" series of Airmail stamps. The planes shown on these stamps never existed. There was never a large powerful transport aircraft with twin radial engines & a triple tail. An entire book has been written about these stamps.

Was the idea to confuse the enemy & have them thinking these huge transport planes had bigger bomber brothers. Or was it a way not favouring one of the wartime contractors over another. Or maybe the Post Office just ordered a stamp with a plane on it & said we need it quick.

A mathematical footnote: About that great circle arc route. Think of the triangle with vertices at these three points: Paris, Nouméa, and the centre of the Earth. Imagine the interior of that triangle filled in — a large triangular flat surface within the interior of the Earth. Now extend that flat surface in all directions, so it becomes an infinite plane containing the original triangle. That plane cuts the Earth into two halves, and the circular cut on the surface of the Earth is a great circle, which runs through both Paris and Nouméa. Since those two cities lie on the great circle just described, they divide it into a minor arc and a major arc. Each of those arcs is a great circle route connecting Paris and Nouméa. If you were Martinet and Klein in 1939, you would choose the minor arc as your flight path. :D

Too small to read much of that message, but here is a little:

The card was written on 19 Oct 1888. The writer, Johan, was in Ambarawa, a town located between the city of Semarang and Salatiga in Central Java, Indonesia.
It is written in Dutch, and begins Waarde OudersDear Parents I hope that this lettercard ...
{Too difficult for me to read from there. Probably a fluent Dutch speaker would be able to make much better progress with the partially legible words that follow.]

If you can get me a better scan of the card Puffin then I can translate it for you.

A sort of maximum card - the stamp is not exactly relevant to the card, but Royal Mail used this slogan on their first day postmark for the WWI anniversary stamp issue.

I used the British Army Uniforms 1st class stamp showing a Royal Field Artillery Observer from 1917 (originally issued 2007, SG 2776) but included in the WWI Prestige Book, on this postcard which carries the same slogan of 'Women of Britain say - GO!"

Women of Britain Say Go postmark on postcard of the original poster.

Today's Happy Day theme:

Australia's annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race attracts widespread attention across the nation. It begins in Sydney on Boxing Day (26 Dec) and for the fastest competitor yacht it might finish under 38 hours later in Hobart. The total distance is approximately 625 nautical miles (719 mi; 1,158 km). Weather conditions are a critical factor, and although the event is in midsummer the race is often impacted by extremely stormy conditions, causing many competitors to drop out without completing the course...
The race is hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

No mail today, the postman's run away
The Maggie stands forlorn, a symbol on the lawn
No mail today, it seems everyone's uptight
But Puffin standing by, doesn't know the reason why.
