What exactly are these 'Ueberreuter' stamp proofs from Yemen?

Post by delsonroche »

While browsing through eBay, I came across some vendors selling
Ueberreuter Proof folders.

These proof folders have six proof stamps of Yemen. Example:

I am completely clueless about what these are.

1. Can someone kindly shed some light on these proofs.

2. Are these proofs valid in philatelic circles, similar to the ones issued say by the postal authorities?

Thank you.

I think Carl Ueberreuter is the name of the printing company - "Druck" means "Print" in German.

In common with most things philatelic from this part of the world, I suspect they were made to sell directly to collectors rather than fulfil any real requirement.

I agree with Gavin.

I suspect these are free gifts and/or trade samples from the printer.

This one look rather nice. It shows the lowest three values of the Yemen 1982 World Food Day set.

Does anyone know if Yemen has a working postal system at the moment?
With kind regards, Jim

Having recently gotten some of these Yemen proofs in an accumulation, I looked into what they are.

-- Ueberreuter is an Austrian printing company. Oddly, they are not normally known for stamp printing.

-- They appear to have been active in printing proofs for Yemen between approximately 1980-1985.

-- The proofs are on Chromalin (sometimes spelled "cromalin" or "Chromaline") paper. This is a thin card with a glossy surface. It is normally used for proofing other types of color print, since it is specifically designed to capture colors accurately. The colors on the proofs really "pop".

-- These come as sets of proofs for issued stamps, plus there are several for sets and souvenir sheets never issued. The rejected designs seem to have something in common -- they are for "generic" topicals not related to Yemen. Cars, birds, famous paintings -- the usual stuff philatelic agencies wanted to print up for just about every country.

Conclusion: They were probably produced for government officials to gain approval before actually printing the stamps. Clearly, some "extras" have gotten into the philatelic market, but I could find no information on how, or how many.
