Scarce items according to some - I've seen them offered on eBay by one of the sellers of counterfeit stamps.

"The dish" was involved in tracking the Apollo missions. It is "the most successful scientific instrument ever built in Australia" according to some. We do have the Square Kilometre Array in WA, but I doubt anyone will make a movie about it.

I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I have a snail mail forum, A World of Snail Mail. I may need help to postally use RM postage stamps - does anyone want to get into letter writing or up for occasional missives?

Australians have taken to decorating old water towers. Australia Post had a set of stamps showcasing them in 2020. They also did a series of decorated silo stamps. Do other countries do this, also?

Happy Solstice to all!

If you're in Australia, you probably think the Winter Solstice 2024 is tomorrow, 21 Jun 2024.
And you're right! But in fact it occurs quite early tomorrow. To be explicit, it occurs overnight tonight, between sundown on Thurs 20 Jun 2024 and sunrise on Fri 21 Jun 2024. So when Australians get up on Friday morning, the Winter Solstice will already have occurred.

Winter Solstice 2024 in Australia

And for those in the northern hemisphere it is the Summer Solstice 2024, occurring at local times that simply correspond to time zone adjustments. With a focus on the UK, the following BBC news item tells us the time relevant to London, and adds the corresponding times for New York and Los Angeles:

.
What defines the June solstice?
The midyear solstice is the moment when the inclination of the Earth's axis of rotation results in the Earth's orientation having the Sun overhead at the furthest possible northerly latitude. That latitude is 23½ºN, defining the Tropic of Cancer, and that angle is precisely the inclination of the Earth's axis of rotation to the plane of its orbit around the Sun.

(The December solstice is the moment when the Sun is overhead at latitude is 23½ºS, defining the Tropic of Capricorn. The solstices are very nearly half a year apart — that is, they essentially mark moments that divide the Earth's orbit into equal halves.)

Why is that latitude called the Tropic of Cancer?
This solstice moment begins the astronomical/astrological period corresponding to the stellar constellation of Cancer. It lasts for about one thirteenth of the year. There are thirteen different constellations of stars that are intersected by the [endless] plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. As the Earth executes its annual orbit around the Sun, an imaginery line from the Sun to the Earth extends beyond to intersect in turn each of the thirteen constellations that make up the zodiac. Right now, that line is about to begin pointing at the constellation Cancer.

What is the relation between the Arctic Circle and the June solstice?
When the Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer the Sun's rays are illuminating a maximum amount of each northerly latitude. The further you go north, the longer a fixed latitude is in sunlight as the Earth rotates. The maximum duration of sunlight is achieved for all latitudes equal to or higher than the latitude where a ray of light from the Sun just grazes the "top" of the Earth — that is 90ºN – 23½ºN = 66½ºN. That defines the Arctic Circle. Every point on the Arctic Circle, and every point further north, theoretically receives sunlight for a full rotation of the Earth — that is, during the (northern) Summer Solstice, everywhere within the Arctic Circle receives 24hrs of sunlight. Matchingly, everywhere within the Antarctic Circle experiences 24hrs without sunlight. These descriptions interchange when the (southern) Summer Solstice arrives in late December.

Australian Historic Fire Engines stamps were issued on 12th January 1983 & here is a fdc correctly postmarked the first day of issue from the Melbourne Philatelic Bureau:

But the first new issue of the year does tend to catch some post offices out & they forget to change the year, as with the following, all 1982:
