The GBPS site:

https://www.gbps.org.uk/information/rates/overseas/surface/

covers UPU GB Overseas rates (from 1875) but not the earlier, generally very complex rates.

I have recently obtained British Postal Rates to Europe 1836-1876 by G.F. Oxley which gives a good account of rates to Europe for that period.

If anyone has queries about a particular rate, I will do my best to help!

Hi OldDuffer1, the pre-UPU rates are very interesting in general.

I'm interested in the rates to Romania (and before that to Wallachia and Moldavia) -does this book cover them?

Thank you very much.

Of course, Romania was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time under Turkey. It does cover "Turkey in Europe" (whatever that means!) but you would need to be much more specific about places and dates. Perhaps an email?

The Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, and later Romania (the United Principalities) were not part of the Ottoman Empire, they were under Ottoman suzerainty. Romania became independent after the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. So they should be separated from the Ottoman Empire rates, I guess. I wrote you an email. Thank you very much.

That part of Turkey west of the Bosporus Strait. To the east is Turkey in Asia.
