belgian catalog.jpg
I have a copy of this catalog that provides me with a lot of reference information on catalog numbers, approx. values, etc. I live in the U S and cannot read either language, however. Beginning on page 150 the columns are labled ** * (*)
I can only assume the designation. Will someone explain the difference in the columns?

Thank you for your quick reply. I really like having the catalog but am at a disadvantage sometimes due to the language barrier, lol.

Referencing the Belgian Precancel catalog again, I realize that it is over 25 years old but still a great reference guide (and would be even more useful if I could read it). My question is how accurate are the values in todays terms. I realize they are in Belgian Francs and would need to be converted.

I guess what I am asking is that if I wanted to purchase a specific group from a reputable dealer and wanted to be an informed buyer as to the current general Catalog Value would there be a factor to apply to the 25+ year old values?

It depends on what you want to buy. Post 1938 pre cancels are included in catalogue Officiel de timbres poste Belgique (COB) which is published every year

I have been searching years for the precancel catalog. In the end I bought a pdf version on Delcampe.

It is a fascinating subject to collect.

btw I had a thread started with an overview of my collection

Can someone give me the significance of the "2" on the attached tab? Is it a plate number or something else?
I have a set from the 2c through the 75c. Missing 1F, 1.5F, 2F.

Joel,
Thanks again for your replies to my questions. I don't suppose I will ever locate the three I am missing but that's the fun of the hunt.

Hi Dave,

My pleasure. I’m not quite clear what you are missing: is it just those three values, or those three values with a plate number attached, or those three values with specifically plate #2. The stamp you show is a precancel. Do the missing values also need to be precancels?

Cheers,
Joel.

Joel, I only actively collect precancels in Belgium issues now, although I have a little above average regular Belgium Country collection. I have a full set of the precancels with the plate #2 tab attached from the 2c through the 75c and with the exception of the 3 higher values I mentioned.

Ah, ok, thank you Dave. So these three values precanceled with plate 2. Unlikely I’d have exactly that but I’ll have a look. Have you tried Delcampe?

Joel, Delcampe kicked most of their U S buyers off their site as they can't seem to be willing to deal with the states that have a sales tax.

I see. I tried to have a look. Not easy to do a cross search. If you have access to the site (I’d imagine you might be able to browse even if you’re blocked from buying. Sorry if I’m wrong about that), please let me know if you find and I can buy for you then send your way.

Best,

Joel, thanks for this.
I do have access to the site, and use it for reference.
I will definitely look through there.
I just purchased the Belgian Precancel Catalog shown a few posts above that way.
A fellow U S Precancel collector in the Netherlands bought the pdf. on Delcampe for me and and was able to download it.
Hurrah, no shipping, Ha Ha!

I go to Stamps
then Europe
then Belgium
then down the list to Precancels

Joel, I searched Delcampe as you suggested. It would appear the #2 grouping would have been a row number rather than a Plate number.
I really appreciate your offer to help me with Delcampe.
My sister lives in a state that does not collect sales tax.
I re-registered using her address. It will delay things but I will be able to purchase now.

I am re-posting this here as I apparently posted it to a general rather than a specific discussion.

I realize it is a Belgian precancel, it is the red overprint I am curious about.
The Brussels precancel appears to be printed on top of the red overprint.
The date in red (under?) the BRUXELLES is 1914 yet the precancel is dated from 1911.
Any thoughts?

I bought an interesting album with doubles from 2005-2008.

So I was able to add a good number of items to my collection of used Belgium. I try to have nice round cancels, but sometimes there is also a part of wavy lines. But some items are quite difficult to get in used condition.
Here is a snippet of that area:

Gotta love the smurfs! The celebration from Belgium Expo 1958 is also nice, but very difficult to get them used.

Tintin is very difficult to get used, and mostly to have it only round canceled.
it comes from this too big minisheet:

Hi all, I just thought I would share this fab resource I stumbled on for the numeral postmarks of Belgium amongst many other things: https://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2018/04/belgium-1849-1865-epaulettes-and.html

I have been trying to sort out my numeral cancels so this has been super helpful, as part of that I did find one Epaulette with the vertical barred cancels - and I wondered if anyone could confirm where the numeral 8 was used

Has anyone come across these catalogues or know where to get hold of them? They are the successor to Luppi's catalogue of varieties but no-one seems to know who published them. The picture is lifted from the Catawiki site where they were sold a few years ago.

My very first Belgian telephone stamp with label. I got it from someone who posted it on Facebook in a Belgian Group.

Sold as TE13 small letters, it turns out to be TE9 with bigger letters (catalog value 440 for MH instead of 85)
Belgium 1891 Telephone stamp with label
Belgium 1891 Telephone stamp with label
These items seems very scarce.

Very happy to finally have a first one with a label.

1954 Belgium stamps Bruges Beguinage set
The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde (Dutch: Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaerde) is the only preserved beguinage in the Belgian city of Bruges. There are no more Beguines living there, but since 1927 it has functioned as a convent for Benedictines, founded by canon Hoornaert. In the same year the houses at the west side were also reshaped and enlarged into the Monasterium De Wijngaard, a priory of Benedictine nuns.

This cover is rather an oddity. It has two Belgian stamps and one French stamp. I'm unable to make out the cancellation, but it looks French.

Apparently I'm missing something in the Belgium catalog here. These two Belgium issues are perf 14, therefore aniline dyed. I have identified the 2c as BE 27B originally "ultramarine" now brown?
Scan_20240511 (4).jpg
The 5c I have identified as a BE 28b originally orange buff now green? Are these major color variations due to fading, oxidizing, or some other reaction or am I completely lost?

After a very long time, I have finally completed a complete set 1929-1932 Heraldic Lion with attached pub.

I was missing only one and for some reason it took me a long time until I decided to buy a lot that included the item.

My question is actually about the post-cancel. I have not seen a "Train style" cancellation on a definitive size stamp issue. This is the first I have found. Any explaination for this?

I assume it has to do with a shortage of stamps at a certain point?

They are I think rather scarce. I have three examples in my collection

Thanks for the reply. Do you suspect that they were regular postage issues that were used for train stamps, or were they regular postage issues carelessly or mistakenly cancelled with a train cancel? The reason I ask, is that as a perfin, there were no TR (train issues) reported for that user.

Apparently not a recognized commercial perfin as it does not appear in the 2022 Catalog of Belgium Perfins. It would appear to be some type of a railroad punch but doesn't resemble a date as others I have. My (un-informed, newbie status) thinks it may of had another function. Any ideas?

I finally obtained one of the early Belgian Medaillons issues with an "accordion fold" as described by Belgian catalog.
