Share your US 'Celebrate the Century' stamps and covers of 1998-2000

Post by AdmiralCollector »

In the thread Share with Others your Engraved Stamp Beauties, I was asked to post scans of the 10 souvenir sheets issued by the US Post Office 1998-2000 entitled Celebrate the Century.

Each decade of the 20th century is commemorated with a souvenir sheet of 15 stamps. On the first 8 souvenir sheets, there is 1 stamp that is line engraved. The engraved stamps are as follows:

32¢ Gibson Girl (1900s)
32¢ Opening of the Panama Canal (1910s)
32¢ Lindbergh crosses the Atlantic (1920s)
32¢ The Empire State Building (1930s)
33¢ International Style of Architecture (UN Building) (1940s)
33¢ Polio Vaccine developed (1950s)
33¢ Man on the Moon (1960s)
33¢ VCRs (1970s)

Others are invited to post here pictures of these stamps used, either on or off cover. Your thoughts and comments on the stamps are also welcome.

Thanks for posting these sheets.

I agree they are very attractive and historically interesting, but I wonder how many were commercially used? Looking at my collection I have only 6 postally used - they certainly are much harder for find than the standard sheet 32c and 33c commemoratives issued at the same time.

I have these 10 sheets in my collection and find them a great summary of the events of the 20th century. In particular I enjoyed the stamps from the decade I was born and forward as I remember most events listed. A great time capsule in some fashion. Thanks for sharing the pics

I just looked through my U.S. collection and couldn’t find a single cover with one of these stamps on them.

I bet most collectors did what I did at the time: bought the mint stamps, put them in my album and that’s it.

Finding used U.S. commemorative stamps on cover post-2000 is very difficult, especially stamps from the 20 stamp sheets (usually two copies of a 10 stamp set apiece) the U.S. issues several times a year.

And I’m to blame for that as much as other U.S. collectors of the era.

Not only do I have the ten souvenir sheets of the "Celebrate the century" stamps,
I also have the first day of issue covers of each of the 150 stamps. I don't recall
the cost but I notice that one can acquire the set on e-bay with asking prices for
the complete set in a binder ranging anywhere from 50 to 400 US dollars. A few
special individual covers go for about 4 or 5 dollars depending on the subject.
