Share your 2024 Olympic Stamps - Proper, Para and Quasi

Post by vicaf60 »

A new year and a new thread ;)

It's the Olympic year, however, new Olympic issues are rather seldom.

So here's a brief review of what has already appeared (I might have missied something, so additions are welcomed)

Czech Republic commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Josef Suk, a composer who won a silver medal in the Olympic art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Чехия_2024_Josef Suk_1.jpg

Another birth anniversary (centennial) was commemorated in Slovenia - that of a Yugoslavian ski jumper Janez Polda who participated in three conseсutive Winter Olympics (1948-1956):

Словения_2024_Janez Polda_1.jpg

Monaco issued another definitive stamp featuring Prince Albert II who is a five-time Olympian (bobslegh):

Монако_2024_Albert II_МЛ_1.jpg

Another definitive stamp was issued in Sweden, with Queen Silvia (who worked for the 1972 Olympics Organizing committee)

Швеция_2024_Queen Silvia_1.jpg

Two countries marked the coming Summer Olympic Games in Paris with personalized stamps.

In Belgium, the initiative came from the Belgian Olympic Philately Club. The stamp was issued in sheets of 10, the design usea a postcard issued in 1924 for the second edition of Olympics in Paris (the first one was in 1900):

Бельгия_ПМ_2024_Париж_МЛ_1.jpg

In the Netherlands, the initiative was private (?), again, a sheet of 10 stamps with the logo of the 2024 Paris Olympics was issued:

Let us continue discussing Olympic related issues in 2024 :)

Croatia commemorated its winning water polo team with a souvenir sheet that presents the team (sportsmen and coaches) who won the world title in 2024 in Doha.

Хорватия_2024_Чемпионы мира по водному поло_Бл_1.jpg
The roster in Doha (and the photo in the MS) includes severl Olympians: Ivica Tucak, who was the Olympic team coach in 2016 и 2020, goalkeeper Marko Bijač, Loren Fatović, Luka Lončar, Ante Vukičević, Josip Vrlić, and Ivan Krapić.

The number of Olympians will inrease as the current team will compete in Paris.

Liberia issued a mini sheet to commemorate the coronation of His Majecsty King Charles III. The fifth stamp shows Princess Royal Anne at the ceremony. She is an Olympic equestrian (competed in 1976 in Montreal) and a member of the IOC.

Либерия_2023_Коронация Чарльза III_Бл_1.jpg

Stamperija's Guinea issued 2 mini sheets presenting the Ukrainian Wimbledon 2024 winner Elina Svitolina.

Гвинея_2023_Элина Свитолина_Бл_1.jpg
Гвинея_2023_Элина Свитолина_Бл_2.jpg
Beside Svilonina herself, a number of other Olympic tennis players are featured in the stamps: Venus Williams, Iga Świątek, Gael Monfils, and Sofia Kenin.

Liberia was supported by Djibouti that issued two more mini sheets with Svitolina:

Djibouti continued with 2 more mini sheets presenting table tennis players, all Olympians:

Джибути_2023_Настольный теннис_Бл_2.jpg

They feature "all the usual suspects" for such issues: Liu Guoliang, Jan-Ove Waldner, Den Yaping, Timo Boll, and Ma Long who have been present on numerous issues of this kind.

Norfolk Island commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Royal visit. One of the stamps (repeated in the souvenir sheet) prestnts the Royal visitors during the excursion, including Princess Royal Anne and her ex-husband Mark Phillips who is an Olympic equestrian as well.

Норфолк_2024_Королевский визит_1.jpg

I will highly appreciate if some of our Australian members offers these for exchange ;)

Princess Royal Anne as a teenager is shown among its family in a souvenir sheet issued by the Central African Republic:

ЦАР_2023_1-z годовщина смерти Елизаветы II_Бл_1.jpg

Guinea Bisau presented one more Royal Olympian in his early years - Albert II of Monaco who cimpeted in bobsleigh in several Winter Olympics. Yet, the main figure in the two mini sheets is his father, Grand Duke of Monaco Rainier III, a member of the IOC:

Гвинея-Бисау_2024_100-летие Ренье III_Бл_2.jpg
His wife, Grace Kelly, a US actress, has some relation to the Olympic theme, too, though more distant - her father and brother were Olympic champions in rowing.

Uzbekistan commemorated with 2 stamps their winners in the Asian Games held in 2023, Takhmina Ikromova who will compete in Paris in rhythmic gymnastics, and Asila Mirzayorova who competed in Tokyo Paralympic Games in long jump (silver medal).

And again Rainier III and the young Albert II, this time from Sierra Leone ;)

It was joined by Liberia, with three mini sheets :)

And to complete the Liberian story, Princess Anne is shown in the mini sheet that commemorates the 1st anniversary of HRM Elizabeth II's passing away:

The CAR visualized an incident occured between the Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan and the Russian fencer Anna Smirnova at the recent world fencing championship in Milan:

ЦАР_2023_Ольга Харлан_Бл_3.jpg

The second stamp in a mini sheet features Olga Kharlan after winning a champion's title at another world championship, in 2019 in Budapest as well. She is in the centre, with Sofia Velikaya from Russia on her right (left on the stamp), and Theodora Gkountoura from Greece on her left. All three are Olympians.

Russia celebrated the 10th anniversry of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics with a set of 3 stamps issued in a mini sheet of 6:

Россия_2024_Сочи_10-летие_МЛ_1.jpg

Austria, in its turn, used a special event cancellation to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1st Winter Olympics in Chamonix:

Two clients of Stamperija, Sierra Leone and Djibouti, issued a set of SOS

And it's a real pleasure to complete my today's review of Olympic issues with a decent issue from a decent country - the Collector's sheet from France (thanks to a gift from clapas):

Time for more Olympic issues ;)

First, the host of the Games, France. It issued a single stamp to commemorate the coming Summer Olympic Games:

Франция_2024_Париж_1.jpg

One more Olympic related stamp comes from France - the one commemorating the initiator of the Women's Olympiads held in 1921-1926 that opened the door to the Olympic Games for women - Alice Joséphine Marie Milliat:

Франция_2024_Alice Milliat_1.jpg

Here, both the stamp and the sheet are of deeper interest. The stamp prsents, beside Milliat herself, three other women athetes - Francesca Pianzola of Switzerland on the right, and Kinue Hitomi, Japan, and Karoline Radke-Batschauer, Germany, on the left. The latter two are the only athletes in the issue who competed in the "major" Olympics. In the stamp, they are shown at the 800 metres running distance that was the first ever women's participation in the Olympic games and led to this dicipline exclusion from the Olympic program for women for 32 years - the runners were absolutely exhausted at the finish line.

Kinue Hitomi, Japan, and Karoline Radke-Batschauer, Germany, in Amsterdam in1928
Kinue Hitomi, Japan, and Karoline Radke-Batschauer, Germany, in Amsterdam in1928

The figures in the sheet margins present other Women's Olympiad competitors (mostly based on photographs from Paris Games in 1922):

Lucile Ellerbe Godbold, USA

Famous jump finish by Marie Mejzlíková at 60 meters duistance

The hurdler is most probably Florieda Burton Batson Gibbens of the USA, though I cannot be absolutely sure:
Left to right: Geneviève Laloz of France, Hilda Hatt of Great Britain, Camille Sabie of the USA and Florieda Batson of the USA
Left to right: Geneviève Laloz of France, Hilda Hatt of Great Britain, Camille Sabie of the USA and Florieda Batson of the USA

Any ideas as to the sprinter (long jumper?) in the lower right corner are welcomed.

Now comes a souvenir sheet from Uruguay the Olympic reference whereof is not that obvious; it required some research ;)

The souvenir sheet commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Shooting Society in Nueva Nelvecia, with the founding members shown in the stamp.

Italy commemorated their tennis team winning the Davis Cup in 2023 with a self-adhesive stamp and a souvenir sheet.

The stamp features the Italian team with the players easily recognizable when you compare the stamp and the photo.

The team and the trophy are shown in the margin of the souvenir sheet, too.

The winners are: Filippo Volandri (captain of the team, participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics), Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti, Youth Olympic in 2018, SOG in 2020), Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego (2020), and Simone Bolelli (2008).

The German set turns out to be not that simple as it looks ;)

There's one thing that I haven't paid attention to until I read the recent issue of Michel Rundschau - the names of the artists on the stamps.

All three stamps are created by well-known German athletes  - Michael Stich, the Olympic champion in 1992 in tennis (in pair with Boris Becker), Josephine Henning, the Olympic champion in football in 2016 (I suspect the face in the middle of the picture is her self portrait), and Maren Valenti who competed at the 2002 Winter Olympics as a member of the German women's ice hockey team.

And again Italy with a self-adhesive souvenir sheet, this time to commemorate Lazio's first national title.

The SS presents the winning roster in the 1973-1974 season. Neither of the footballers competed at the Summer Olympics, however, the coaches did - Tommaso Maestrelli played in London in 1948, and Roberto Lovati was a part of the Italian Olympic squad in 1952 in Helsinki but did not paly in any match.

Slovakia commemorated the coming Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games with 2 stamps.

Traditionally, their design is photography-based. The Paralympic stamp presents Marcel Pavlik who competed at Paralympics in 2016 and 2020, and, I suppose, will be a member of the Slovak team in Paris:

The other stamp features Alexandra Longová who was a part of the Slovak team in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and 2018:

New Zealand cheered its Olympic team and its funs with a set of 4 stamps issued in sheets of 20 (5x4) and in a souvenir sheet.

Again, traditionally, it's a real problem to find good scans (not photoes) of actual single stamps (not draft designs) against a black background :(

I would appreciate if someone could send such scans for my catalogue (at least 300 dpi).

North Macedonia recalled that it is 100 years now after the Summer Olympics were held in Paris in 1924. The stamp commemorating this year Games feature the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics logo (not a common thing recently ;) ), the Eiffel Tower and the face value "100" in red:

A pair of stamps is issed in Greece (with no official logo of the 2024 Summer Olympics, again).

Traditionally, the both stamps contain the Tower design, and the second stamp features relatively new Olympic sports - breakdance and skateboarding.

Греция_2024_Париж_1.jpg
Греция_2024_Париж_2.jpg

The stamps are issued in sheets of 25 (5x5) stamps):

The Olympic fire is traditionally lit in Greece, in Olympia, and the Greek Post traditionally ( ;) ) issues a personalized stamp for this event:

The self-adhesive stamp from Bosnia and Herzegovina commemorates the Paris Olympics 2024 and reminds of Sarajevo Winter Olympics 1984:

Босния и Герцеговина_2024_Париж_1.jpg

The next two stamps come from Monaco. The first stamp presents the navy service of Albert II, the current Prince Of Monaco and, at the same time, a four times Olympian (in bobsleigh):

Монако_2024_Служба на флоте_Albert II_1.jpg

The other one features Prince Pierre of Monaco, Duke of Valentinois who used to be an IOC member for Monaco:

Монако_2024_Prince Pierre of Monaco_Duke of Valentinois_1.jpg

The stamp is issued in a se-tenant pair with a stamp that has no reference to the Olympic theme.

And to complete this Olympic review, the recent issues from the host country, France, scans whereof are hard to find in good quality (at least, I've failed to, and I hope for help from our French Forums members).

First, France issued a set of 8 odd form self-adhesive stamps in a kind of booklet folder:

Франция_2024_Париж_Бк_1.jpg

Another booklet folder contains 3 self-adhesive round stamps in the colours of Olympic medals:

Франция_2024_Париж_Бк_2.jpg

When unfolded, the booklet represents a model of a podium where Olympic winners get their medals:

Франция_2024_Париж_Бк_2-1.jpg

And finally, a real headache of the modern philately, in my mind - the so-called Collector issue commemorating the three times Olympic champion Marie-José Pérec:

Франция_ПМ_2024_Marie-José Pérec_МЛ_1.jpg
The last picture is from Colnect.
