I know what you mean. I think it has mainly to do with how the music files were converted to MP3. If the settings are off then it'll sound horrible. I think you can compare it with music video's on Youtube. Some are world class quality, others are plain rubbish.

Sometimes you can tweak it a bit with your own settings.
It seems my posting recommending to convert the CDs to MP3 with 256 kBit or higher (flexible Bitrate is also an option) has vanished.
Also a good CODEC for converting the files is highly recommended.

As alternive to MP3, try FLAC or even Ogg Vorbis...

Klaus Schulze, formerly of Tangerine Dream, died this April.

Here is a typical album: "Timewind"

I didn't know that. I wasn't a huge fan, and didn't know much of their vast discography, but I have two that I've greatly enjoyed for many years now - Stratosfear and Force Majeure.
Edgar Froeses album 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale' is a bit special, too.

Here's another take on a very well known song:

"The Phantom of the Opera" is a song from the 1986 stage musical of the same name. It was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and additional lyrics by Mike Batt. The song was originally recorded by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley, which became a UK hit single in 1986, prior to the musical. In its theatrical debut, it was sung by Brightman and Michael Crawford in their roles as Christine Daaé and the Phantom.

In this version it is sung by Henk Poort, a Dutch opera singer and Floor Jansen who is lead singer in the Finnish symphonic metalband Nightwish. They sang it on the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) where professional singers perform for eachother.

For something different:

"Yma O Hyd" ("Still Here") was released in 1983 during Dafydd Iwan and Ar Log's 'Taith Macsen' ("Macsen's Journey") tour to “raise the spirits, to remind people we still speak Welsh against all odds, to show we are still here".

Welsh historian and Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament, Gwynfor Evans, is said to have given Dafydd Iwan the idea for the song. Dafydd Iwan describes it as a "very positive song" that celebrates the "survival of the language against all odds and the survival of a nation". The song cites the survival of Wales and the Welsh language for over 1,600 years, ever since Roman officer, Magnus Maximus, left Wales and the island of Britain to become Emperor of the Western Roman Empire in 383 AD, and thus the year in which the modern country of Wales was born.

Martin Johnes, professor of history at Swansea University, has suggested that the song is an anthem for “Welsh nationalists, Welsh-speaking culture and the industrial working class of Wales". "Wales was politically annexed in 1280; we haven’t had a totally self-governing political unit since." The language was banned by Henry VIII of England in 1536 which lasted over 400 years, until 1942, and so “the survival of Welsh identity is pretty remarkable”.

Coolio dies age 59:

"[Verse 1: Coolio]
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's nothin' left
‘Cause I've been blastin' and laughin' so long, that
Even my momma thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you talkin' and where you walkin'
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip, but I gotta loc
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke
Fool, I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
On my knees in the night, sayin' prayers in the streetlight

[Chorus: LV]
Been spendin' most their lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Been spendin' most their lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spendin' most our lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spendin' most our lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise

[Verse 2: Coolio]
Look at the situation they got me facin'
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the street
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watchin' got me chasin' dreams
I'm a educated fool with money on my mind
Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'd out gangsta, set trippin' banger
And my homies is down so don't arouse my anger
Fool, death ain't nothin' but a heart beat away
I'm livin' life do or die, what can I say?
I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24?
The way things is goin' I don't know

[Refrain: LV]
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

[Chorus: LV]
Been spendin' most their lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Been spendin' most their lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spendin' most our lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spendin' most our lives livin' in the gangsta's paradise

[Verse 3: Coolio]
Power and the money, money and the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody's runnin', but half of them ain't lookin'
It's goin' on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's cookin'
They say I gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me
If they can't understand it, how can they reach me?
I guess they can't, I guess they won't
I guess they frontin'; that's why I know my life is out of luck, fool!

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

That the ones we hurt are you and me?"

I came across an extremely talented singer/songwriter recently from Canada called Terra Spencer, whose storytelling and songwriting are a real throwback to a bygone era back in the 1900's somewhere. Her latest album called "Chasing Rabbits" is a testament to that in the main, with a couple of other folk-driven songs thrown in.

Her stuff is easily found on Youtube and other mediums but if you feel like losing yourselves by taking a trip back in time for a few minutes, try this song of hers - the story within is just wonderful.

I recently bought a new mini stereo with a working cassette recorder. Now I am making some new tapes to listen to in my truck.
My latest creation is a bunch of tracks from Electric Light Orchestra. There is some good stuff! Songs like 10538 Overture, Kuiama, The Hall of The Mountain King (from Grieg's Peer Gynt), and Fire On High.
A bunch of killer Cellos that are as menacing as any electric guitar!

I saw a very early gig of theirs while Roy Wood was still in the band in Liverpool in 1972.
Internet research reveals that it was the eighth public performance by ELO.
They played a few songs from the first (10538) album, and a couple of the later Move songs. They were rather under-rehearsed and not very exciting.

It must be the worst attended gig I've ever been to, only a few dozen paying customers in a vast, cold, boxing stadium which seated 2000.

You wouldn't have thought from that they would hit the heights they did a few years later.

4. China crisis
5.John martyn
6.The Smiths

Great to hear a shout for China Crisis. A wonderful band. Half a dozen superb albums, and very, very underrated.

Quite like all on your list actually, even though I'm a sixties kid. (Apart from New Order, who do nothing for me)

If you like that kind of thing from that period, I'd commend to you:

As one who began his DJing career in the mid-1990s, I have an absolute soft spot for house/trance/techno tracks from that era, and also get more than a little giddy when I discover reconstructions or covers of classic tracks updated for a more contemporary production sound.

My current earworm is Delerium f-Sarah McLachlan - Silence (Andy Newtz 2023 Energized Bootleg Remix). The original was released in 1998 and was a huge trance hit across Europe thanks to a young Dutch DJ named Tiësto who created an absolutely amazing remix, and it even charted on the US Billboard Dance Chart. Twenty-five years later Sarah's amazing vocal still just emotes such passion and emotion, and the remix has absolutely amazing drive and power, especially when it breaks down into the chorus of the track at the 3:15 point.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Wq8XraOhs&list=PLYF-lP7VPNQPRZcRVwqPiYwJhP1yCsNCQ

Lyrics :

[Verse 1: Sarah McLachlan]
Give me release, witness me
I am outside, give me peace

[Refrain: Sarah McLachlan]
Heaven holds a sense of wonder, and I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up when the rage in me subsides

[Verse 2: Sarah McLachlan]
Passion, choke the flower till she cries no more
Possessing all the beauty, hungry still for more

[Refrain: Sarah McLachlan]
Heaven holds a sense of wonder, and I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up when the rage in me subsides

[Chorus 1: Sarah McLachlan]
In this white wave I am sinking, in this silence
In this white wave, in this silence, I believe

[Verse 3: Sarah McLachlan]
I can't help this longing, comfort me
I can't hold it all in if you won't let me

[Refrain: Sarah McLachlan]
Heaven holds a sense of wonder, and I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up when the rage in me subsides

[Chorus 2: Sarah McLachlan]
In this white wave I am sinking, in this silence
In this white wave, in this silence, I believe
I have seen you in this white wave, you are silent
You are breathing, in this white wave I am free

Tiësto (Tijs Verwest) is great. He has mellowed down somewhat. This is one of his latest tracks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfWmWlW2PvM

[Intro]
Lay low, hit the sun
Everybody have a real good time
Real good time

[Verse]
I'm hearin' voices in my head
There's no way to escape
Da-da-da-da, they got me
Anytime, anywhere
In my mind, in the air
Da-da-da-da, surround me

[Refrain]
(Lay low) They surround me
(Lay low) Surround me
Anytime, anywhere
In my mind, in the air
They're waiting for me
Oh, they're callin' on me

[Chorus]
Lay low, hit the sun
Everybody have a real good time
Real good time (Surround me)
Yеah, we cool, yeah, we drunk
Lost my mind and, baby, I feel high
I feel high (Thеy're callin' on me)
Lay low, hit the sun
Everybody have a real good time

Just can't go past Angus.

As for music from the past.....been listening a lot to Gil Scott-Heron. Seriously politically aware soul for then but with sentiments 100% relevant now. Musical wordsmith indeed. Credit to Brian Jackson also. Personal favourites include:
