jugoslavija_post - Now that's what I'm talking about. Very sweet.

Your Arms of Jamaica stamps reminded me of this one: President Nord-Alexis, engraved and printed by M.E. Côte, Paris, and issued by Haiti in 1904, Scott No. 101, SG No. 141. (Also, the gal on the right kind of reminds me of a certain free-spirited young lady friend I once took to a Caribbean island-themed fraternity party back in my university days.) :D

KevinHedley - I really like your Colmar Haut-Rhin stamp. In my opinion, Pierre Albuisson is one of the most talented stamp engravers on the current scene. Here are some images of another stamp designed and engraved by Albuisson that I admire: Nevers, issued by France on May 19, 2000, Scott No. 2773, Y&T No. 3329.

Rein - Yes, I've visited those websites (and other similar ones), but the quality of the images at them is typically quite poor, as they tend to use WAY too few kilobytes per image. My homemade 800x600 pixel images usually have 4-6 times as many kilobytes as theirs do. Also, I generally scan single engraved stamps at 1200 dpi (and even higher for detailed close-ups.)

For comparison to Pierre Albuisson's stamp above, here are some images of Danish chinaware on stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slania and issued by Denmark on May 22, 1975.

Nethryk,

OK, the general attitude of 60dpi is enough! I also do scan at 2400dpi and then select the details I want to display!

Abel Mignon was the engraver for 17 French stamps.

But the accomplished artist did not receive his first assignment from French postal authorities until he was 63 years old.

Mignon's first project was for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Modernes issue of 1925

Image
This Mignon stamp was released in 1931. It depicts Marseille and the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica. The basilica is on the city's tallest hill, a strategic location occupied by the Germans until the liberation of Marseilles in late August, 1944.

Mignon worked on stamps between 1924 and 1933. He engraved seventeen stamps for France. He also engraved stamps for the French colonies of Guiana, Dahomey, Madagascar, Morocco and Senegal, along with Czechoslovakia.

Three years after engraving his final stamp, Mignon died in Fontainbleu 1936.

Unfortunately, not all of the stamps that Abel Mignon engraved for France were printed by the intaglio (recess) method; several were typographed. Here are images of the last stamp that Mignon engraved for France, along with images of another engraved stamp that should please my building-loving friends here on Stampboards. :D

Typo correction: the name of the final stamp Abel Mignon engraved for France is Le Puy en Velay. And while we're on the subject of typos, I'm going to take the liberty of sneaking in this set of stamps engraved by Mignon, but printed by typography; Fachi woman is simply irresistible. :D

Baltic Sea Birds, designed by Martin Mörck, and issued by Sweden on October 3, 1992. This was a joint issue with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Note that although it is true that there is some lithogravure on this pane, the intaglio engraving work is superb.

Jean Pheulpin worked on more than 600 stamps, mostly as an engraver, sometimes as a designer, and mostly with stamps of France and Laos.

His first stamp was a Comoro Island airmail released in 1949. Two years later his first French stamp was issued.

Pheulpin took on many of the more intricate assignments in the early years of the France art stamps.
Image
Image
Originally schooled as a metal worker, Pheulpin studied printmaking before his career as an art teacher. In 1950, he embarked on stamp engraving full time.
Image

He also worked extensively on Laos stamps for 15 years.
Image
Born in Valentigney in 1907, he passed away in Paris in 1991.

stallzer - Agreed! Pierre Gandon's artistic ability coupled with his engraving skill resulted in his producing some truly remarkable postage stamps.

Here are images of another airmail stamp I like: Great Bustard, designed and engraved by Claude Durrens, and issued for use in the Somali Coast on October 24, 1960, Scott No. C23, SG No. 294.

Here are two engraved stamps produced by the Japanese Printing Bureau that seem appropriate to post now, following the terrible devastation caused by today's earthquake and tsunami. Both stamps depict the Phoenix Hall of the Byodo-in Buddhist temple in the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. The ¥24 value was issued by Japan on March 19, 1957, Scott No. 636, SG No. 528, and the ¥30 value was issued on January 4, 1959, Scott No. 636A, SG No. 529.

Like the mythological phoenix, may the Japanese people find the strength to quickly arise from the ashes once again.
