Thanks uncadonego. I usually do not like cluttered stamps like this one but somehow Saint Pierre and Miquelon have produced a very nice set. Perhaps it is their maritime location.

This would have to be one of the strangest first day covers...............................

In 1991 Tonga issued a set of stamps showing the local rowing festival - the artist got the idea for the designs of the stamps in the set from a picture on the cardboard four pack of the Royal Beer Company in Tonga.

On the date of issue, some smart alec must have decided he would "make" a first day cover by using the cardboard four pack!

Here is the result:-

One side of the folded four pack - the first day cover

The other side of the folded four pack

Some of the original artwork from the set:-

Sailing ship under Chilean colors and coat of arms of Valdivia, printed by lithogravure, and issued by Chile on February 4, 1970 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the capture of Valdivia by Thomas Cochrane during Chile's war of independence from Spain, Scott No. 384.

Historical/literary/film note: Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, 1st Marquess of Maranhão, GCB, ODM (1775-1860) was a Scottish-born Royal Navy flag officer and radical politician. His daring sea exploits during the Napoleonic wars and his tumultuous personal and political life served as one source of inspiration for the naval fiction of nineteenth and twentieth-century novelists, particularly C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey (played by Russell Crowe in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.)

Addendum to my previous post: Here is an image of an engraved stamp featuring a portrait of Lord Cochrane, issued by Chile in 1915, Scott No. 124, SG No. 160. Each year on May 21, Chile Navy Day, the Chilean Naval Mission in London lays a wreath on the tomb in Westminster Abbey of Lord Thomas Cochrane, the British Naval officer known as “the wolf of the sea” who served in the Chilean rebel navy against the Spanish in their War of Independence.
