Be careful when collecting stamps in person from Glen's home

Post by GlenStephens »

As kennywkt's CIA sleuthing above showed on another thread, my place is perched on the side of a hill.

The 3 levels of stamp mess is basically built on the side of a steep cliff, and sherro's recent google drive-by pic of 4 The Tor Walk showed just my letter box, 100 metres downhill from the house. (See the lowest photo below.) :D

stampboards member A-One Stamps knows all about that driveway after today. Only too well.

He popped by to do some buying and selling, and drove down my driveway on his way home. As he has done 100 times before.

And somehow managed to roll his car onto its roof, with him trapped inside.

His nice car is now a total and complete write off. Both sides, front, bonnet and roof, and most glass.

I stress Marty is fine, with just a few cuts and lacerations from climbing out all over the glass from the smashed driver's window and windscreen, whilst trapped upside down.

Very lucky the car stopped where it did. There is a straight 20 foot drop onto a concrete road, to the side it stopped at. And had it rolled a little further, I'd have needed to phone an ambulance, or a hearse, and not a tow truck. :!:

I was watching him drive off waving goodbye, and it was like a scene from some bad movie unfolding.

And many folks wonder why I prefer mailing goods, than personal pick-up.

Good to see that Marty is ok after that.

Looks like one of those really really unexplainable accidents!

Glen.

Thanks for all your help at the "accident scene" and calling the crash repair guy, and tow truck, and my son to come get me.

I am safely home, and am all OK. :)

No that belongs to another stampboarder who was also here today, and also assisted Marty.

That "Vespa" is a very expensive Italian racing bike, the brand name of which I have no idea about - he can advise you better. :)

He too has his own story about this place. He was bringing me back a SG catalogue or something last year to me, and rounded a corner up the road, just when a truck was doing an illegal 3 point turn.

He wrote off his expensive brand new BMW, or some other fancy racing bike he has JUST taken delivery off that day, and got pretty badly cut up, and took many months recovering from shoulder injuries etc.

Me, I like my transport with FOUR wheels!

It's funny but I parked up there once. For some reason I had a bad feeling about the closeness of the fence and that BIG DROP - perhaps some ESP at work

I park on the Tor Walk now and walk up the STEEP driveway.

Glad the injuries were only minor by the way - it could have been very nasty.

Glad to hear you are OK Marty. Anyone who can smile and pose for the camera after that must be made of "strong stuff".

Well done, and fingers crossed it doesn't take too long for you to get the car replaced and get mobile again. (upright and four wheels firmly on the ground I suggest)

All the best to you

Lucky you Marty!! That could've been nasty ! Hope you are OK.. :D

PS ... The car couldn't have rolled by going just up the driveway or just reversing down the driveway as the car would be straight at all times ... can we assume that you were doing some sort of turn manoeuver and rolled whilst sideways to the driveway ? ...

PPS ... Marty could have been described as per watermarks analogy ... 'Reversed went Sideways then Inverted' ... hehe :D :D :D

I still can't see how Marty rolled. That driveway doesn't seem any worse than mine from that view. Mine's about a 30 degree slope. :?

Hi All,

Just visited this thread - I have only been there twice and park in the street and walk up.

Only to the bell though as the steep steps are too much for one who is not good at heights.

Hope quick recovery for Marty.

Cheers Kev.

See I am away from the board for a few days and you go from sedate to thrill seeking ! Glad to hear a-one is OK. Take one of the photos and put it on a personalised stamp with a logo like "Warning - Stampboards - Excitement for Stamp Collectors" 8)

Out of interest, the cheque from our insurer arrived today!!

Am well and happy, but the car was a complete insurance write off.

Asked Glen to change my handle to Marty as A-One Stamps was taking too long to type in each time. 8)

Last year at Stampex,i was selling some stamps to Richard Juzwin, when i tripped and fell through the wall, into the adjoining stand.

12 months on i still have a scar on my knee (caused by the stand divider). Luckily my computer skills are limited so i shall not download a picture!.

Is it stamp dealing generally,or just dealing with Aussie dealers which is so dangerous??????????????

Okay Glen ... I'm onto your M.O. now ....

1. You invite people to your house.

2. They seem to have an inexplicable and unusual "accident".

3. You "acquire" their stamps before the coroner arrives.

4. Thus the lack of room for walking inside your house.

Yes ..... and I have just seen that the number on Glen's mailbox is '4' ...... I don't suppose any Chinese visitors will be calling in person there any time soon !!!!

Four (四, formal writing: 肆, pinyin sì) is considered an unlucky number in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cultures because it sounds like the word "death".

Food for Thought !!

Another hapless victim was notched up yesterday. :D

Brian Moore "stamps4collectors" popped over to buy a few cartons of stuff.

He managed to get his car hopelessly marooned on my driveway, which is FAR steeper in this area than it looks on these security camera images, due to the angle the cameras are at.

We needed to stand on the boot and back door, to add weight over the back wheel.

As well as add 100 kilos of Lighthouse stockbooks in cartons over that wheel as well.

The white smoke cloud you see is a brand new $150 tyre being shredded on the bitumen!

All to no avail, and Brian needed to phone for a tow.

Yes Castlecrag is a quiet, conservative, sedate suburb.

These larrikins from Parramatta coming over here, and doing screeching burnouts for a half hour has stirred up the local Matrons. Several needed to use their best smelling salts, to recover from the shock.

Under the new NSW "Anti Hoon" legisation, there is a Police Warrant out right for his arrest.

I understand they now take the cars off these hoons and crush them? I just hope Brian removes the stamps FIRST! In Marty's case (photo below) he saved them the trouble!

ahhhhhh !!! I see the scam now !!

Glen makes his driveway as dangerous as possible so that after Glen makes a sale to a buyer, Buyer tries to leave & crashes car, Glen buys back goods in cash at 25% of what buyer paid, because buyer now needs cash fast to buy a new car.

Brilliant !
