Western Australian postmark ? Post Card to Palestine

Post by worldphila »

Dear members

I have an Australia up rated censored postal card of 9d (mailed to Palestine) with unclear postmark.
Could someone tell me the year date (according to the 9d rate)?
Town address ?

Thanks
Baruch Hans

Baruch, it might be helpful if you take a high resolution scan of just the stamps and postmarking, and load it here.

From what I can see, it appears to have originated in West Australia. Both the Postcard, and the stamps, were issued in 1938; not sure about anything else.

Dear mcgooley
Many thanks for your help.
Western Australia seems to be the right answer.
The 9 P postage seems to be an interesting high postage.
I have no problem of identification of the postal card or the stamps.
This postal card was mailed during WWII. I think that I can read the date without the year. It's probably 31.Dec.

Best wishes

I'm unaware of the historical events surrounding Palestine in the late 1930s - is it possible that the card actually pre-dates WWII? Censors operated in times of 'peace' as well

If you show the back of the card there should be some info there that will help to find out where it was posted from.

The censor mark is around the 1941-1945 period.

Dear David
Many thanks.
The back writing is in Idish. And there is only the Hebrew month (Teveth) and the day is Monday.

Perhaps the Yiddish mentions the town name the card was written from. Have you translated it.

The 6d Kookaburra was first issued 2/8/1937 and the 1d green 1/3/1938,
so it must be after then,
but the censor marking is not Australian, so presumably between the latter of those dates, and the commencement of censoring in Australia with the World War.

Can you do a family history search and find out when the person to whom it is addressed arrived in Palestine, or moved to that place?

Dear David and Philanthropist
Many thanks for your help.
No town name is mentioned. It's a very hard task to find a family information.
Still I think that the high mailing price can help to find out the mailing year.
I have searched with Google but couldn't find an Australia chart of the mailing cost during those years.

Wish you a very good weekend

The next Tevet after March 1938 were:

1st Tevet 5699 / 23 December 1938 - 29 Tevet 5699 was 20 January 1939.

1st Tevet 5700 / 13 December 1939 - 29 Tevet 5700 / 10 January 1940.

1st Tevet 5701 / 31 December 1940 - 29 Tevet 5701 / 28 January 1941.

1st Tevet 5702 / 21 December 1941 - 29 Tevet 5702 / 18 January 1942.

1st Tevet 5703 / 9 December 1942 - 29 Tevet 5703 / 6 January 1943.

1st Tevet 5704 / 28 December 1943 - 29 Tevet 5704 / 25 January 1944.

1st Tevet 5705 / 17 December 1944 - 29 Tevet 5705 / 14 January 1945.
No-one ever said it was easy. If it was it would be boring!

Some comments:

If a mod changes thread to "Western Australia town postmark name required", or words to that effect, should be easy for W.A. collector/resident to determine town name.

The Censor handstamp is W.A.; Perth censor.

9d was airmail postcard rate to Palestine in this era. Air Mail etiquette appears to have dislodged upper left?

SORRENTO is a possibility,

Baruch, the 1st. two letters of the Yiddish at the right, is that Perth, Sorrento is a suburb of Perth and it has a Perth censor mark,

Dear David and Rod
Many thanks for your help.
It seems that this is most of the information that I can get.
Accept a further Era information. 9 P for airmail to Palestine-Era years 1938 to 1945 ?

Wish you an excellent new week

There were two 9d airmail postcard rate regimes to Palestine:

Dec 1934 - Jul 1938
Sep 1939 to Dec 1941

The second period is the one related to this postcard.
