The 4th of December 1965 was an important day for unusual stamps - on that date, the world's first gold foil stamp was issued by Gabon in memory of Dr Albert Schweitzer who passed away on 4 September 1965.

Since then, hundreds of gold foil stamps have been issued, mostly by Sharjah, Ajman, Fujeira, etc., too many to show all of them here.

PRINTED ON PORCELAIN

On 20 March, 2014, Austria issued the world's first stamp printed on porcelain.

It was issued in a small cardboard holder

With a face value of 5.90 euros, 150,000 of the porcelain stamps were issued

The following information came from the Austrian Philatelic Bureau website:-

"Brief description of the product
Perfectly formed, timelessly beautiful and made by hand - so, the world-famous Viennese Augarten porcelain for almost 300 years. Exquisite COFFEE and tea service, stylish vases and lamps as well as artful figures delight collectors and aesthetes alike - over generations. The precious porcelain with the distinctive blue shield as signing is also used in the service of the Republic of Austria: whether as a service in the Hofburg and the Federal Chancellery or as a special gift on high state official occasions. For the series "Classic brand" now an extraordinary stamp made of porcelain was created, decorated with the "Viennese Rose". From the naturalistic bouquets of Baroque to neo-classical floral ornaments, to the playful rose motifs of the Biedermeier: The rose represents in 1718, one of the main motives of the Viennese porcelain painters since the founding of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory represents the famous "Viennese Rose" goes on drafts of the imperial manufactory 1740 back. 1924 Edwin adapted Breideneichen, longtime workshops Head of the Department of Painting, the subject of the Vienna Purple Rose and adapted them to the taste of his time - the Art Nouveau style. There was a stylized rose bloom, exactly applied brush strokes and subtle shades with a brush conferred a simple and delicate elegance; she became the most sought after designs of the manufactory. Today, the range of classic "Viennese decor" includes a wide variety of porcelain objects and enjoys great popularity at home and abroad. For the production of a stamp made of porcelain both its own process as well as a special tool needed to be developed, because only then the production of the relatively large number of brands could be overcome in the given time. Since the usual molds of plaster only about thirty times can be used, the stamps were not made by casting with casting material, but with a more solid form ("rotational mass" or "press material") is pressed. Subsequently, the sheets were baked in the porcelain so-called first firing at 960 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, then glazed and again cured at even higher temperature. In the Augarten porcelain manufactory, the workpieces are always painted by hand. That would not have been possible in a particular case because of the high support and the lack of time. Therefore, the most expensive and highest quality printing method was used: the screen printing. To ensure color fastness and contrast this special stamp made of porcelain, the colors were eventually "burned" at 820 degrees Celsius."

So, the production took place by the use of a special solid molding form which allowed for greater usability. The porcelain mass was pressed in the form and then baked for 24 hours at 960 degree. Then glazed and cured at even higher temperature and thus made the stamp unbreakable. In the Augarten porcelain manufactory normally all products are hand painted but in this case and because of the quantity they decided to use silk printing.

The stamp size is 35 x 35 mm and the thickness is about 3 mm so I wonder how it would go on a real circulated letter through the post

Would the letter get caught up in the sorting machinery due to the stamp's thickness?

Switzerland issued on 4 Sept 2014 a large S/S printed on cardboard in the shape of a music record

The stamp on the S/S is round with a hole in the middle

The round stamp with hole in the middle has gum on the back while the rest of the S/S has no gum

The stamp is printed on fairly thick cardboard

From the Swiss Post website:

"A piece of music has been imprinted on the "record" part of the souvenir sheet using a special coating. When you take the circular, ready-for-postage stamp off the souvenir sheet and place it on your record player, it plays a brass band version of the Swiss national anthem at 33 rpm with a single puck."

STAMPS WHICH REVEAL SOMETHING HIDDEN

Thermochromism is the property of substances to change colour due to a change in temperature. Thermochromic inks or dyes are temperature sensitive compounds, developed in the 1970s, that temporarily change colour with exposure to heat. Some stamps have areas treated with thermochromic ink, and when rubbed, or exposed to heat, a colour change occurs, or hidden words or images are revealed.

Thermochromic ink has been used on stamps since 13 March 2001 when Great Britain issued a S/S showing the weather.

When the dark blue section in the sheet at left is rubbed, it changes colour as can be seen in the sheet at the right.

Later on 2 October 2001 Great Britain issued a set of stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Institute. Among the six stamps issued was a second-class stamp issue, which celebrates the Chemistry Prize, and depicts a Carbon 60 molecule (left stamp above). The stamp is heat sensitive, and firm pressure from a fingertip reveals an ion hidden behind the black on white design (right stamp below).

On 15 March 2005 Great Britain issued a set of 5 stamps showing magic tricks. Two stamps used thermochromic ink

The 47p stamp showed the 'Knotted scarf trick'. Thermochromic ink on the spotted scarf reveals a different scarf when warmed by rubbing.

The £1.12 stamp showed a variation of the 'Three-cup trick' using a pyramid under one of 3 fezzes. Thermochromic ink reveals which fez the pyramid is under.

6 July 2013 Jersey issued a set of stamps showing Superman – one stamp from this set had thermochromic ink – when rubbed, the earth can be seen underneath Superman

24 June 2014 Belgium issued a S/S for the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Meteorological Institute.

The tree leaves are green but when the temperature exceeds 25°, for example if one puts a finger on the stamp, the green layer disappears showing the tree in one of the four seasons (sun, rain, snow, clouds).

31 August 2013 Malaysia issued a sheetlet showing museums and artifacts. When the black section at the right of each stamp is rubbed, an artifact is revealed. The issued stamps are shown at the top of each picture, and underneath shows the revealed artifacts after heat is applied.

New Swiss stamp Mini Sheet you can play on a record player!

Rather than commemorating or breaking a record, a new Swiss stamp is an actual vinyl record that plays music.

The 5-franc stamp was issued Sept. 4 in a souvenir sheet.

In announcing the issue, Swiss Post said: “In many of us, the black 45 and 33 rpm vinyl discs evoke nostalgic memories. Now they are the subject of an exclusive miniature sheet included in the latest stamp issue. The latter will literally be music to the ears of many stamp enthusiasts.

“Even if the stamp, which is suitable for franking, is detached from the miniature sheet, a specially engraved soundtrack still allows the miniature sheet to be played on a record player which is set to 33 rpm. The soundtrack includes a brass band version of the Swiss national anthem.”

The 5fr stamp is designed to look like a vinyl record. The label area of the record surrounding the central spindle hole includes the country name “Helvetia”; the denomination “500” (for 500 centimes, or 5fr); the name of the national anthem Swiss Psalm in German, French, Italian and Romansh; and the name of the composer, Alberich Zwyssig.

The anthem’s lyrics came from a poem by Leonhard Widmer. The first verse is printed in fluorescent ink on four Swiss stamps issued May 5, 2011 (Scott 1422a-d), to commemorate the anthem’s 50th anniversary. Swiss Psalm was first performed in 1841, but did not become the national anthem until 120 years later.

The nonprofit Swiss Public Welfare Society organized a competition in 2013 to replace the lyrics to Swiss Psalm, but, if possible, maintain the melody by Zwyssig. More than 100 entries were received by the June deadline.

Thomas Rathgeb designed the new souvenir sheet. Joh. Enschede of the Netherlands printed it by offset using a special varnish on wood-free cardboard.

On 10 Sept 2015, Ireland issued a set of 5 stamps for the 5 senses.

The 70c stamp is for 'taste' as strawberry flavoured gum has been applied on the back

The E1.05 stamp is for 'touch' - thermochromic ink has been used so that when the hand on the stamp is touched, it changes colour

The E1.25 stamp is for 'sight' - this stamp is printed on transparent paper, so when you pick it up, you can see through it

The E1.70 stamp is for 'hearing' - thermography is used so that when the stamp is rubbed, it makes a sound

The E2.80 stamp is for 'smell' - a mint fragrance is added to the surface of the stamp

Good idea, but not now. I am very busy with my collections and creating my albums mainly Laos stamps, Mythologies and Monkeys. I always liked nice covers and I use to keep those who posted to me like the covers I posted here. Usually, I keep one from each type and give the rest to other collectors.

HORSE HAIR ATTACHED

Would you believe it? A horse hair on a stamp!

Belgium post has issued a special miniature sheet commemorating the City of Mons which has been designated as European Capital of Culture for the year 2015.

The miniature sheet with 5 stamps features the main buildings in the Grand Place in Mons

The Ducasse de Mons or Doudou is a popular festival that happens every year on Trinity Sunday (57 days after Easter) in the town of Mons in Belgium.

During Sunday's Trinity, the first Sunday after Pentecost, the Grand Place is transformed into a large battlefield for Lumeçon. This is the fight between Saint George, which represents the good, and the dragon, symbolizing evil.

The combat happens on the central square of Mons. The length of the dragon is about 10 metres long. The end of his tail is covered with horses' hairs. The dragon gives also attacks the public with his tail. People try to take the mane of the tail because it is said to bring luck for a year.

It is for this reason that a horse horsehair is offered during the show . This authentic hair is fixed on the miniature sheet and can be easily removed . It measures about 25 cm, the ideal size to carry it around the wrist to bring a year of good luck for those who believe in this sort of thing.

Cool thread.

I see the foil coins are not restricted to Tonga, despite their low catalogue values, they are hard to find now, and only the first series are easy to get, the key stamp is the 15/- black Official Airmail, which actually costs about 10 bucks, whereas the rest are a few cents including 2/9. Most sets for sale stop here. Mostly people sell part sets and odd mixed values.

The other coin series were 1964 womens conference (hearts postage and maps airmail). Then the overprints of 1965 for the increased rates on the 1963 coins, some are quite scarce. Then the memorial overprints oh the 1964 hearts and maps.

In 1967 was the second coin sets for the coronation of Taufa'ahau Tupou 4, and these were overprinted 1968, for his 50th birthday. Some of these are hard to find and I only 6 or 7 of each. Finally some of the hearts were overprinted in 1970 for the 5th anniversary of Queen Salote Tupou 3rds death.

Starting 1966 they went back to endless reprinting on stamp issues from 1953 to 1963 and in April 1969, the first sticker stamps were issued, the first series of the low value banana stamps.

It is my goal to collect all of these stamps!

Tongan sticker stamps are quite hard to get too. There were two major sets of definitives. Usually you can get a few of the low values easily, but complete sets mint or used are hard. I have a bag of mainly stamps that are stuck on each other, mostly low value.

From what I have worked out so far (Photos coming up)

Definitives 1 - Fruit 1969 - 1980
1st set included large bananas to 5 seniti, coconuts 6s to 10s, and Watermelons from 15s to $2 (Two pa 'anga)

In 1970 the colours were changed on low value bananas
Again in 1972 and the coconuts and watermelons had the words "Best in the Pacific removed"

In 1974 smaller sized bananas were used, and they increased to 2 banana and then bunches in 1977, again smaller. Coconuts also reduced in size and remained at 6s to 10s. I think watermelons were also issued.

In 1978, the fruit all got redesigned, bananas were bunched at 4seniti, coconuts were used again at 6s to 10s and very small pinapples up to $1 pa'anga. In 1980 2 new values showing a photo of a pile of fruit (Pineapple, Coconut, watermelon and bananas) appeared for $2 and $3. Official Airmail versions also came out up to $1 pa 'anga again using the small pineapple.

In 1984 all this fruity nonsense was swept away and the marine life series came out with nice drawings, values from 1 seniti to 10 pa 'anga with the pa ,anga stamps being a larger size and smaller values being larger than the fiddly fruit labels. These oblong stamps were added to 1985 and 3 types of official overprints.

Finally in 1983 6 booklet coil stamps of the king came out with values 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 15s, and 32s from a booklet. In 1988 the marine life series were issued as gummed stamps with some designs changed.

There were about 30 sets of commemorative stamps starting with the 1969 (September) South Pacific Games and ending with 1986 issues like Ameripex and one or two in 1987. By early 1986 they were issuing gummed again.

Typically these sets had 12 or 14 values and these were divided into Airmail and Postage, sometimes 2 or 3 stamps were added as "Official Airmail" Getting low values of most are easy, complete sets are not.
