Here goes - this is my first post

Firstly, I know Glen does not think much of eBay, but I've bought hundreds of stamps via eBay, and I've never had a problem. Of course you need to be discerning and don't rush in when something looks too good to be true.

But I've also bought stamps and other philatelic material from a couple of on-line sites.

The one that I've got most experience with is Catawiki (https://www.catawiki.com/), through which I've bought a number of lots. It is very reliable, has a large range of items for sale, it describes the items in very good detail, it has good photos of every item in a lot, etc. I think it's a Dutch-based site, but I can thoroughly recommend it. PLEASE NOTE that it sells more than stamps, so you need to find the stamp auctions within the site.

The other site I've just found out about - and have just bought my first lot so I can't yet confirm how good it is, but a friend at work swears by it (and he's someone who is extremely wary of anything that is on-line - he's never used eBay and probably never will). the site is Sandafayre (http://www.sandafayre.com/), which is based in the UK.

There are a couple of other sites that sell stamps online, but I've not yet bought anything from them so I can say how good they are.

One is Postbeeld (https://www.postbeeld.com/), which looks pretty good to me.

The other is even less known because I've only used it for its online catalogue. This is Stamp World (https://www.stampworld.com/en/). I find it the most handy online catalogue around. It's very well organised - and it's free. I like it because it has photos of every stamp in every issue (except for stamps showing nudity - it seems to be a bit prudish in this regard).

I hope this information is useful.

Kind regards
Adrian

I have looked at many of the posts and unless I just totally missed it there are a couple sites that I have used that are not mentioned. One is https://www.hipstamp.com/. It is the reincarnation of BidStart. It has a lot of listings and is easy to search. It has a lot of good selllers and allows anyone to open an account. I have found some good deals there. Another site good for picking up odd singles is http://stamps2go.com/default.aspx. Don't use that one often, but can be useful for filling in short sets. One other I've used a few times is http://www.kmphilately.com. It's not as search friendly as first two mentioned.

Very dodgy Trademe (New Zealand lot).

Pair of Fiscals, the Blue is quite scarce and very rare in Mint condition. The seller claims this stamp is UHM with gum.

Clearly a bleached fiscal and regummed and reperfed. The Price is reasonable, as a decent fiscal used of it costs a few $, but saying its fresh and mint worth $1650 is ridiculous. The reperfing is so bad it slopes downwards on the top row. Anyone who has one of these stamps, knows the perfing on them was ragged as heck.

Also no scan of the back is shown and this issue is known for people trying to bleach used ones with pen or crayon marks and pass them off as mint no gum.

I believe that the OP set the criteria for the thread as not to cite all stamps auctions, but to cite comparable online sites to ebay.

"That is the prime criterion, you must be able to join/register and sell your own material; that's the essence of being an alternative to ebay"

Mad bidding on super common Australian 50 cents 1966 silver

Image

Trade me auction - https://www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-collectables/coins/austra ... 82de33-002

Expires wed 8th.

$22.56 for a coin that retails around $10 - $12 for $8 worth of silver.
These are not rare in any sense of the word. I have 3 of them.

Much better was the $13 each I paid for 2 of the 1982 Brisbane $10 silver coins. These weighed 18 grams each had 92.5% silver instead of 80% and had mintages of only 100,000 not 36 million.

I put it here as its not ebay or a stamp lot.

A local auction (local to me anyway) has these stamps at auction right now. The lot is not yet on the lot for a final round of live and internet bidding (I don't know the URL) but internet bids from seven different people is up to $401 US.

I've done some online reading using my phone but I cannot see why the bidding has gone so high. Are there any ideas about actual value or what is going on here?

Besides Ebay, is there any other auction site to buy stamps, mainly collections?

Post by niosurfer »

Sometimes I see whole collections in Scott album pages for sale at Ebay. Besides Ebay, is there any other site where I can bid in such auctions? Thanks!

It would help if you told us which country's stamps you wanted to buy. Scott makes albums for most countries, and some auction sites will be more or less useful according to what they list/what you want.
Always on the lookout for Australian pre decimal First Day Covers.

.
And remember in the USA ebay (and Amazon) is now auto adding relevant State sales tax, and for purchases in many foreign countries, they do the same.

Bidders often forget this, and it is added here on TOTAL of invoice inc all shipping - i.e. a $1000 bulky lot for plus $100 shipping has $US110 extra local tax here is added at checkout. Nothing you can do about it.

How much of that $US110 eBay then chooses to hand over to Governments I'll let others speculate on!
