Hi all,

I'm Paul from Essex, UK.

A few years ago I went back to my Great Britain collection which had been collecting sitting idle for around 15 years.

Having finally got that more or less up to date, I recently bought a Stamps of the World set of catalogues and have moved to organising a very basic world collection which had been sitting in the loft for even longer (granddads, mums and my childhood stamp collection combined).

I'm finding a couple of challenges identifying a couple of the stamps, so hoping people on this board can help me.

Hi, I have been a part time collector since I was 12. I am now 62. I have only briefly looked at philately for the last 5 years as I contracted the Staff bug in my heart and was not expected to live.

Hence I have taken nearly 5 years to get back to moderate health. In the this time I sold off my life long collection as I thought my number was up. Only today I have learnt that Mossgreen Auctions went into liquidation in 2017. I gave a heap of material to Gary Watson when he was running Prestige Philately.

Remember he travelled around Australia obtaining collections. One particular item I gave Gary was a tete-beche pair of mint unhinged, 5 cent Christmas Island Cocoanut plantation stamp issued in 1916 I think. I have never seen another tete-beche pair.

When my lots sold there was no sign of this Tete-Beche pair. I asked Gary what had happened and he informed me he could not find them. He offered $100 back then, probably around 10 years ago?, so I had no choice other than to accept his offer.

My question is, has anybody even heard of a Tete-Beche pair from this printing. It is long gone, but I have always wondered what became of them.

One thing that does please is that Glen Stephens is still around. Found him to be totally honest, not ruled by greed.

Looking forward to satisfy my curiosity.

To comment on your tête-bêche 5¢ pair of Christmas Island Cocoanut Plantation stamps,
I must say that I've never heard of such an item. I've been interested in those stamps for
a long time, so it's surprising to hear now about yours. It would be a significant item.

The Cocoanut Plantation stamps have been variously regarded as "cinderellas" or "locals"
— probably the latter is the more appropriate/explicit descriptor, given that they exist on
covers together with French Oceania stamps, cancelled in Papeete.

New member - first poster.

I am based in Bangkok and collect Pacific Islands (along with anything else that clutters the cupboard). Am a member of the Pacific Islands Study Circle and the International Society for Japanese Philately. Apart from stamps, cancellations, covers etc., I also am building a few specialist collections of WWII New Guinea (Japan military mail, AFPO and US APO), Canton Island covers (both British and US), and Losuia (Trobriand Islands) PNG.

Look forward to the discussions. It has been my experience that valuable information can be found on bulletin boards if you dig deep enough.

Welcome Russgward from York. I am Richard Debney originally from Hull.

I do not know whether the York Philatelic Society is still in existence but there certainly is one in Hull - Hull & District Philatelic Society, established in 1896.

Indeed one of the most prominent Hull & District's members is a gentleman called John Sussex, RDP, and he is, I believe, from the York area. You might want to look into these opportunities.

Please notice that unexplained acronyms are poor communication. I don't know what "USTT" stands for,
and you haven't explained it to help me and other readers who might like to know what you're talking about.

I went to a Google search to discover the meaning of the acronym. Here's what I found:

I've been collecting stamps since the 1940s.
I've always concentrated on British Empire from 1840 to 1936.
However, I've another collection of everything else and I've made a recent decision to have a cut-off date of 1950.
I'm not impressed with the swamping of postage stamps from the 2000s onwards.
My post 1950 'rest of world' stamps and my post 1936 'British Empire stamps' are being offered to my granddaughter to see if she is interested in 'old stamps'.

I don't mind the frequency of stamp issues, but do wish they were more useful. A set of 6 perhaps (1st, Europe 20g, Worldwide 20g, two designs apiece) rather than 10 first and all those miniature sheets...

I miss my trips over to Beaumaris (sub-postmaster retired), and Menai Bridge for the new stamps.

P.S. A thought: it might be a good idea to invite your granddaughter to help you with your
stamps before offering her your "recent" stamps. It turns out that children these days are
usually not exposed to stamp collecting ("screen time" tends to be their focus) so they don't
really have much familiarity with stamp collecting or understanding of what is interesting
about it...

I am new to stamp collecting and recently obtained a collection consisting of many places ~ But I'm not sure if I will keep the collection going, or sell them and put the money toward the medical bills I currently obtain for treatment from being unknowingly exposed to radon

in my family's home for at least 15 years ~ Of course insurance doesn't cover treatment

, so probably the later, but I do love the history inspired in them

Hello Kim,

First of all, welcome aboard.

Not to discourage you, but truth needs to be told. According to my experience (active collector since 1977), in 99% of the situations where we see mixed stamps from mixed countries, there is no significant financial consequence. Exception is when a knowledgeable collector dedicates many years and financial resources to develop a large specialized collection. How do I know before even seeing anything? Because we have all been asked to check various stamp accumulations so many times.

What you have may be a good way to start exploring stamps and increasing your knowledge, but I doubt there will be enough to make a dent in your medical expenses. I have an idea about how much those could be. I live in Cincinnati, OH.

You might want to take a look at this site:

It's a nice and free resource. You can browse countries and check things out. Please keep in mind that the "values" shown are dealer's sale prices for perfect examples, and are not what is paid to someone who sells them to a dealer.

If you see something that may stand out, you can always post a high resolution scan (not a cell phone picture) and ask for more information. Someone will give you an answer.

Stampboards is for collectors of all ages, and all levels of experience.
One of the best things about stamp collecting is you can learn a lot of Geography,
and that side of collecting seems to have caught your interest.

Here's a challenge you might like to consider. For each country you can, try to collect three things:
(1) at least one stamp showing something interesting about that country;
(2) a postcard or envelope ("cover") sent from that country, using one or more stamps of the country;
(3) a map showing where that country is — perhaps you can even find a stamp showing the map, but
if not, then draw or photocopy a map from an atlas, or some other source.

To show you what it possible, here are a few examples I just found on eBay — none of them expensive.

Iceland:

: Iceland, 2003: two volcanic islands, and a map of Iceland

: Iceland, 1970, postcard sent to Freiberg, Germany

Here are two more items: the first is a set of several stamps showing the geyser;
the second is a "miniature sheet" of two stamps, with a broad surrounding margin,
showing a map of Iceland and the surrounding region, including Greenland and
the North Pole. I really like both the set of stamps and the miniature sheet, don'y you?

India:

: India, joined set of six stamps showing ancient jewellery

: India, cover sent to Germany, with map stamps

: India, 1974, post card of Taj Mahal, sent to USA

And here is a nice modern set of Indian stamps showing traditional musical instruments:

What could you do with these items?:
.
You could mount these items neatly on a page (one page per country) headed by the name of the country
(and a few other facts about it if you like).

Perhaps you can even start a page when you have one of two of the basic items, and leave a space for
the other one or two items you still need to add when you can acquire them.

If you take up this suggested challenge, soon you will have a very satisfying personalised collection of pages.
If you choose to work with separate, hole-punched pages, you could add them to a binder, and rearrange
them or add more pages from time to time, as you wish, and as your collection grows...

No pressure, just a suggestion you might like to think about. Searching through the "stamps" category on
eBay will turn up all sorts of things you never expected (and you don't have to select expensive items).
That eBay category includes used postcards and envelopes (covers), which should be kept intact, because
they can add a real-world dimension of interest, quite different from just enjoying the beauty of nice stamps...

(By the way, I think actual correspondence by postcard or by envelope used to send a letter, is "real world",
whereas "first day covers" are usually rather artificial, not really the carriers of actual correspondence, but
"souvenirs" for collectors.)

Oh well, that's plenty for you to think about...
