The Scottish banks have retained the right to issue their own notes since the 1800s. Currently there are three , The Clydesdale Bank ( which is Australian owned) was first with a plastic fiver. Just yesterday and today I got the new Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland notes in change at my Post office.

So Hiawatha was Scottish?

It seems Nan Shepherd was a Scottish writer & Poet. She taught at Aberdeen Teacher's College, wrote 3 Novels, lived within a Mile of my house in the Aberdeen suburb of Cults, got a Doctorate from Aberdeen University .........................and was so well known I'd never heard of her or read her work ! .............and neither had my wife who read English at Aberdeen University !


At least Sir Walter Scott is less obscure.

Check the design of the note for the EURion constellation - a pattern put into the design and coded into newer copier and scanner software to prevent copying.

Have the Northern Irish banks, which are also entitled to print their own notes, come up with plastic ones yet?

To answer my own question, apparently the only Northern Ireland plastic note was a special £5 one issued at the end of 1999, by the Northern Bank, to celebrate the new Millennium:





I understand that the "ordinary" one is dated 8th October 1999 and a special collectors' version dated 1st Jan. 2000. 2 million were produced altogether and you can pick one up on eBay for around £15. It was printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN). [Since apparently the Australian facility (NPA) did not have the necessary capacity at the time.]

By the way - try searching on eBay for the new English £5 note - there are chancers trying for £1000! (I suppose you never know?).

In my student days, the way to shut a preaching vegan up (are there any other type?) was to ask them what kind of film they used in their camera. All popular brands of film at the time used gelatin in their construction.

If you guessed Australia on this one you missed the geographic location by 4000 km NE from the centre of the country (Australia).

During my visit to Kiribati in 1980 I collected this note. The country only produced coinage - all notes were Australian. Although most were in good nick some found on the outer islands were often well circulated.

I found Aussie six pennies from the 1920s & 30s as well as florins from the 40s and 50s. Obviously, the banks and the country were quite thrifty.

My question is why the serial number advances from one to the next by
an increment of 2000 ?

Another question. What could be the significance of this USA $2.00 bill
and the April 13, 1976 postmark on a 13 cent stamp. The issue date of
the postage stamp is December 1, 1976. The only connection I can see
is that the banknote is Series 1976 which is also the bicentennial year of
the signing of the Declaration of Independence which is depicted on the
reverse of the note. (Which, by the way, depicts all 48 signers of the
Declaration) Maybe I answered my own question. A bicentennial stamp
would have been more appropriate.

If they printed them "four across the page", and "in batches of 500 sheets", then all the serial numbers would run consecutively, when guillotined, and stacked.

Well, its a Chicago postmark (Mount Prospect, Illinois) on a Chicago Federal Reserve Note (7), and the 13th April 1976 was the official first day of issuance of that commemorative bill.
