Glad you liked it. I've never seen the cancel before. It says that the franking of the letter has been checked, I guess because I used older stamps. Might be a nice bit of postal history.

I now see it's on both envelopes, to you and Chanada... Nice.

Yes, I noted the cancellation, and wondered why it is applied here. Your explanation sounds reasonable, as you can also use stamps in old currency which makes it a bit more difficult to check the postage.

As I don't really collect Dutch postal history, it is a bit wasted on me. If you like the cover, I will send it back to you.

I think the surcharged Christmas stamp is causing the "problem" as I haven't seen the cancel on other envelopes I franked with older stamps but without surcharged stamps.

I only collect postal history from Leidschendam itself so maybe you can use it in a swap with someone else.

In June, when Canada Post had suspended service to Belarus, Belarus Post was still accepting mail for Canada but Victor and I were uncertain about trusting a "Theme it Forward" mint exchange (Norway, 1985. Offshore Industries MS) to the mail under such circumstances. Instead, Victor put an empty cover into the mail on June 17 to test the system and, hopefully, see the route the letter would take. The letter arrived today (July 28) with no postal markings whatsoever. It might have arrived a day or two earlier but it was redirected by Canada Post from my old address in Ottawa (hence the yellow label--I peeled it off and there is nothing underneath but my old address):

Thanks for the experiment Victor. Given the length of time it took for the cover to get here it may have had an interesting trip but we have no way of knowing! I do like the cover with the Haim Veitsman commemorative and label for Belorussian-born leaders of Israel on what I assume is a pre-stamped domestic rate envelope. Thank you.

I checked the Canada Post website today and the same notice is still posted:

Red alert: Canada Post is not accepting mail and parcels for these destinations due to a temporary service disruption.
Date posted: March 10, 2022
Postal services have been suspended to Belarus due to the lack of available transportation.

Wow!

The clerk hand canceled so fast I didn’t even realize they had a cool pictorial postmark of Ogopogo at that PO!

(Ogopogo is our version of Loch Ness’ Nessie and allegedly lives in Okanagan Lake, a very long lake that dominates the Okanagan Valley where I live now).

This is probably a good time to note that I recently sent off a Theme it Forward item to Elton in India, after about a month of NOT being holed up in my stamp den because we’ve had a long heatwave here with temperatures in the high 90s and low three digits Fahrenheit and we’ve been hanging by that lake to cool off!

Victor I still owe you your item; am checking with George to make sure it’s OK to send it via Germany as we did last time. Haven’t heard back yet so he may be taking a summer break, too.

Now, we’re off to the lake!
