Then, to top it off, she flies away instead of back on her perch, so I couldn't get the shot of her catch.

So yeah, frustration, but also drive, knowing that if you keep at it, you'll get better shots.

One of the greatest shots I ever saw of a Kingfisher's beak breaking the surface of the water took over 100,000 attempts by the photographer, by his own admission.
This might be the picture you mentioned.

It was this one, and it was actually 720,000 shots.

This Shot of a Diving Kingfisher Was 6 Years and 720K Photos in the Making

https://petapixel.com/2015/11/25/this-shot-of-a-diving-kingf ... he-making/
Nailing the perfect shot sometimes requires a lot of patience. Scottish photographer Alan McFadyen would know: he spent an estimated 6 years, 4,200 hours, and 720,000 exposures trying to nail the perfect symmetrical shot of a kingfisher diving into its reflection.

Thank you for your wonderful photos. Mines are not so good but they show the same fascination for birds I guess :)
On this one I was lucky to catch a white egret with some great blue herons.

That's the important part. When I miss a shot, I'm still glad I was there to experience it.

And to a huge degree, it's not so much me, it's simply a matter of having equipment.

Possibly, but it looks more like a Little Pied Cormorant (first image).

The excellent picture by PetCin88 does not allow us to see the smaller size, longer tail and different leg feathers for the' little' species. However the differing colour patterns around the eyes and the size and colour of the beak lead me away from the Pied Cormorant.

Yes, seems right. There is a picture from e-Bird of both side by side. I can't post the pic here because it is licensed, but this is the link to look for yourselves.

I was walking yesterday morning with Emmie and my wife.

My wife pointed up behind me. Above us past the tree line was the Osprey hovering.

I couldn't run to the shore, because I didn't want to scare the Osprey into changing its mind, so I missed the dive.

The best I could do was start shooting as the Osprey started to pull itself out of the water.

Great to see them in their wild state! I guess it was cruel to keep one, caged, as a pet as was common here at one time- maybe still is! (Everyone had a "budgie""!).

To have a look at budgerigars in their natural environment (low rainfall region of inland Australia),
check out this short video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyfCMrqitWI

A screen shot from that video — not sharp,<br />because they're moving quite fast
A screen shot from that video — not sharp,

.
Relatively few Australians have seen them in their natural habitat, because they live in remote parts
of inland Australia. In my childhood my family lived on the edge of the region where 10 inches of rainfall
(about 250mm) was the annual average. In that area I was familiar with large flocks of budgerigars.

I don't know how long this is going to take to fall off, or if he'll make it. A lot of the time, the only way to not drown is to lose a foot.

If this bothers you, don't Google Snapping turtle bite images. The damage to the face when birds heads are under water are even worse...
Injured Green Heron.JPG
So I saw my buddy again last night, and the mangled part of his foot is finally off, and it looks like the wound is finished, with no further complications. He looks better overall than he did the first day I saw him. Looks like he has adjusted okay.
