Or is that just being a busybody?

Postboxes are important, dammit!!

Well, its easy to do :

Per the first link....
ExpressandStar wrote:PC Richard Lymer, of the East Staffordshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Through our investigations, we have also become aware of further incidences involving a neighbouring force.

Anyone with any information should message Staffordshire Police on Facebook or Twitter quoting incident number 213 and 721 of November 12 and 106 of November 13, call 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

.... Or just get "the Brid Van Gang" to "re-position it"
(as its unlikely to get reported stolen).

(Hint : The latter is not a serious suggestion
There is always the possibility of a legitimate explanation, genuine slip up, or "a change of status" since the photo was taken last year)

If it were "on my patch", I'd write to them first, (even anonymously, if not comfortable) to give them "a sporting chance to resolve it", before involving third parties.

That was my thread, too!
I took the first photo myself only a couple of days ago. I know that RM used to sell off redundant boxes, so he probably owns it legitimately. I think it should be clearly marked, though - it fooled me..
Don't want to involve the police, but I might drop a line to Royal Mail.
I'll let you know what happens..

Here's a real collector's item.

A Victorian pillar box (no cypher, but clearly Victorian) incorporating a gas street lamp.
It stands outside the first Co-operative shop in Toad Lane, Rochdale, Greater Manchester (Now the Co-operative Museum)

Pictures from Google Streetview
001a____.jpg
001a___.jpg
xxx01a.jpg
The box was originally installed in Lord Street, Rochdale. It was removed to the town museum when that area was redeveloped in 1966, and reinstalled in Toad Lane in 1981, with the opening of the Co-op Museum.
It is completely unique, as far as I can tell. Unless anyone knows different.........

And I found another black box - also in Little Haywood and presumably in the wall of the former post office.

Yes, there is a modern box only a few yards away. I wondered if the Penfold was "re-located" there as a historic thing. There's no signage or explanation. I had to move the adjacent bar's A-board before I took my pic.

Some Victorian boxes are grade 2 listed. Do you know that it wasn't always there?
If they want to make a feature of it, they should at least make it look nice. The last two Penfolds I saw, in Chester and Shrewsbury, were immaculate, and looked splendid in their historic settings.

The problem with older boxes is the size of the slot. The Victorians obviously thought that they didn't need to cater for anything lager than a slim envelope. No chance of getting a thick A4 document in there! Maybe that's why there is a modern box instead?

Yorkshire postboxes attacked by 'artist'...
https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/myst ... s-23965464

Several postboxes in the Huddersfield area have been vandalised like this. But it's OK, because he's an "artist", apparently - an American who styles himself the 'Yorkshire Banksy'. It's not clear what his point is.

If he's an artist, you'd think he would be more adept with the spray cans. This just looks a mess.
Royal Mail is having to repaint them, of course. Hey Ho.

Easy conviction for criminal damage ... "if you can catch them".

That's going to take a good ten minutes "to coat all over",
so they are going to slip up eventually.

lesbootman wrote: 16 Mar 2022 21:24 This pillar box would have presented a difficult challenge if I'd listed it on the postbox hunting thread.

It has only been in situ for about a week and has yet to be commissioned into service.

It is the same "new" style as the box at Horncastle.

The Post Office in Walkden (City of Salford, Gtr Manchester) has recently relocated to the perimeter of Walkden Shopping Centre. The powers that be have relocated the postbox too. The Crown office style post office inside the shopping centre has closed down and been replaced by a somewhat smaller shop cum sub post office.

Update:

The pillar box is now in use!

Here's an interesting one I found in Liverpool city centre today.
It's an oval KGV box, which at first looks like a standard double-aperture box, but this one has only one slot on the short end, and a (obviously long-unused) stamp machine on the other short end..
A most unusual design which I've never seen before.

Impressive Bill. A big jump in quality from my Brownhills box.

I've read about that style of box I think and there are pictures on Flickr, one on a street somewhere and one in what could be a museum.

Dropped by yesterday and it is still for sale. You don't get a lot for your money - it is not a large building!

Great Budworth wouldn't need very much cosmetic work at all to be used as a setting for a Victorian era production!

No longer in use, unfortunately. A little VR post box in the wall of a cottage in Gwaelod-y-Garth. Superseded by an ER post box down the road.

'The Old Post Office', Rudston, East Riding of Yorkshire.

Now a private house (aren't they all?)
But the box is still in use, at least

Here's a curiousity found on the "Hunt the Postbox" thread:

What is this full size pillar box doing placed on an unmade track in a remote village on the Isle of Skye?
Looks rather out of place?

We went to the Royal House of Sandringham this weekend to see if the flowers for the Queen were still there - alas they had been removed from outside the big gate.

There was this nice post box though.
