Like others I've read about here, I collected stamps in my youth and then went away from it somewhere in the middle of the 1960s. But a couple years ago, my mom passed away and left me her stamp collection. In delving through it, I regained an interest in the hobby and so dug out my own collection from 60 years ago. Now I'm back, but wow! have I missed a lot!

Mostly collect U.S. stamps but have a very small world-wide collection. Also have a few plate blocks and first day covers. At the moment I'm using a new Harris Liberty album to transfer stamps from my old one.

My avatar is named Hefferson. He was rescued from a yard sale, given googly eyes  and sometimes decorated with seasonal attire.
Hello! I do like googly eyes! They end up on unique/misshapen homegrown vegetables, a few other things, bluetooth speaker, and I've seen some placed on post boxes!

It's a kind of "good news, bad news" story —
The good news is you've gone back to stamp collecting.
The bad news is you've gone back to stamp collecting. ;)
Women of my life are very pleased with this way of dealing with a midlife crisis although my sister, who caused all of this with one carelles sentence ("I was on the post office website and saw that they have very nice stamps") now has remorse.

This is also another "come back" as I haven't been on "traditional", phpBB-run forum for I don't know... 10 years? :D
Hello and welcome.

If only more people noticed the postal services produce some very nice stamps and bought them for use... I was in a post office today - they don't get the special issue stamps (I was in to use their postbox).

She's an art historian and I'm an animator - we notice everything that is aesthetic or visually intriguing.
The irony of it all is that most of Poland new issues are total c*@p so I was lucky. And yes: except the main post office it's almost impossible to buy special issues in the post office. Stamps are dying out and we are the last of the Mohicans (Stampohicans??).

Hi,

Brand new to this forum, and to stamp collecting.

Inherited a large collection of albums and stockbooks from my grandad many years ago, and honestly just started to look through them and research the stamps in more detail over the last few months. I must admit, he's made it very easy for me, he seemed to be obsessively neat and organised with everything.

I have a few specific questions, which I'll have to try and find the right thread for!

Thanks!

Hello! My name is Johnny.I'm from Los Angeles,California.Thank you very much for allowing me to join the forum.I know very little about the stamps I have acquired.Going through them and gathering them into groups based on country,I have began to appreciate how beautiful and intricate the images are.My grandfather came to the U.S.in 1920 from Denmark.I have the stamps he collected as well as those my father collected. My father stopped collecting in the mid 70s when I was born.I was a handful,I'm sure.I am my mother and fathers 9th child.Over the years I have looked through the stamps a few times and didn't know what to do with them and the vast amount was overwhelming.Anyway,
now's the time!Id like to upload pics of the stamps in groupings and see if there is anything of value that deserves more protection than being in an envelope.I hope to upload pics as soon as possible. Thanks again!

Hello Johnny = JohnnyS in Simi Valley, California, USA.

May I suggest that you look at your inherited stamps as a wonderful opportunity to learn about your heritage? Your grandfather's Danish background and the culture he came from are there to discover in the stamp collection he formed. Stamps are a delightful and immediately appealing source of cultural information, regardless of whether they are "common" or "rare".

Denmark, 1977: Danish handcrafts
Addressed first day cover, 22 Sep 1977
Denmark, 1977: Danish handcrafts
Addressed first day cover, 22 Sep 1977
.
In due course you may learn that some stamps in the collection are relatively scarce, but that's not likely to turn out to be the collection's main potential value for you. :D

Happy browsing on Stampboards. Here are a couple of recent links of possible interest:

Hello and welcome to Matt+Z in Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA.

Hooray for "flyspeck" philately — the attention to details that tell us so much about the stamp printing process.
Here is an example to delight you:

Malta, 1935: 6d Silver Jubilee with extra flagstaff (SG 212a)
[a vertical scratch on the plate, to the right of the main tower]
Malta, 1935: 6d Silver Jubilee with extra flagstaff (SG 212a)
[a vertical scratch on the plate, to the right of the main tower]
.
As you no doubt know, the extra flagstaff in this nice positional example multiplies its interest and retail value by a very large factor!

Hello and welcome to Sandor = sv7ter in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

You are already an advanced, specialised philatelist, so you might well have information to share with us!

On the other hand, you will run the risk of finding other topics of interest on Stampboards,
so be warned, you might find your collecting interests expanding into additional fields ;)

Best wishes,

Thank you. I have been previously a Postcrossing user. When I lived in Denmark I was a very active user, on standard exchanges, the forums and private swaps. Cards were easy to get and there was high interest due to the small number of Danish users.

After moving back to Canada, I found it hard to continue because cards are so hard to find here. They are just not a thing. In my town of 500k people I know 2 places that sell any and they are the most boring standard stuff imaginable.

I do hope to spend more time exploring here to see if there is a swap community here, and if so where on the boards it is located, and restart on Postcrossing

Good morning, I am in need of some help from your team. A couple of weeks ago I tried to log into my account of brautisetter which I have had for a couple of years and was told that I had the wrong password. When I tried to change the password I could not get an email to continue. After repeated attempts to log in or change my password I finally gave up. I could not figure out how to contact anyone at your site for help, so I decided to open this alternate account in hopes that someone could help me get reinstated with my previous posts. I really enjoy this site and want to continue using it.
Best Regards

Well, at least postage perhaps is cheaper from Canada!

Browsing a couple of postcrossers' walls I think are local to you - I see what you mean, you might need to take yourself to Niagara Falls for some postcards! Or, there has been at least one Postcrossing meet up in Hamilton and a meeting card produced... Ah, there is a meet scheduled for 1st Jan! More info on the their forum. RRs still going strong there too.

Welcome Zack = zhall in Cherokee, Oklahoma, USA.

USSR philately is a brave choice, as it's quite extensive, but full of historical interest.
Towards the end of the soviet era the spirit of Glasnost can be seen in some issues, such as this pair of 1990 stamps forming a joint issue with Australia, celebrating scientific collaboration in Antarctica. (Items currently on eBay)

USSR, 1990: Scientific co-operation in Antarctica (joint issue with Australia)

Welcome Canadian Codhead!

I saw your posts in the pictorial postmark thread. You have some very nice ones! Thanks for sharing.

Also jealous of your avatar. A Tiger Spiketail -Cordulegaster erronea?
I have not yet got to see them (mostly my fault for just not making the time).
Hi Brenda,
I still have a few of the pictorials to scan and share. A lot of my self-mailings just have standard PO cancels though as since my focus is the town cancel, I'm choosing based on need and size. If they happen to have a pictorial, so be it.

Yes, that's a Tiger Spiketail. I assume you know the spot where to look for them (yes, this is the same Chris from the HSA ode counts etc) ?
Primary interests: postal history, town cancels, used Scandinavia and Canada, postcards.

Welcome aboard Anthony.

I don't collect Egypt, but at the first glance the document gives the impression of being a receipt for a postal parcel.

You might want to do a quick search on the Stampboards, and open a dedicated thread if you can't find any information. We have experts on pretty much every subject of philately. Someone will eventually answer.

Hello ajf7777, and thanks to Number-O-Ne for the comments.

I had difficulty finding a suitable thread, but added a comment elsewhere before noticing Number-O-Ne's post here. (Sometimes posts take "research time", and it's not uncommon that someone else adds a relevant post in the meantime — I think that happened in this instance.)

I am new here. My name is Sandor and I am from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Machins and UK perfins are my main interests but also the rest of the world. I am using the Deegam HB5 for identification of the Machins and I am a member of the Perfin Society. Sometimes i need help for identification and perhaps this forum is suitable for that.

Best Regards,
Sandor
Greetings,
Hello from another Machin Collector, you'll enjoy here, welcome on Stampboards.

Best wishes,

Hi Sandor
I am also a machin collector and this subject is only going to get more interesting after the sad loss of our queen.
It will be interesting to see how the stamps for the king will look.
Best regards

By the way, do you think this negative seal is a postal, telegraph used or just a private seal used on a revenue stamp, thanks again for your help.

You're welcome :)

This is a (non-postal) revenue use with an official mark. Not entirely readable, but could be a notary.
