Where in Melbourne was/is P P Postal Hall, please?

I scored these covers "Wideworld" and "Royal" in a FDC album auction lot last week.

A very good question. If no one answers, I will try to remember to ask Woody next time I visit Phoenix.

Hi all, was going through some KGV Heads and came across these postmarks. First is clearly that of Main Lead, now a closed post office as of 1970. Second example has the “Vic” for Victoria then a line toward the word “Main”. Wondering if it is a further example of Main Lead but without the word “Lead”. Would appreciate the assistance of our postmark detectives if possible to confirm. Other possibilities I think are Main Ridge and Maindample. Post Office commenced 1/1/1871 before becoming a T.O. (Telegraph Office?) on 14/4/1934. Regards, Summo.

I can't see any reason to think that they aren't both the same:

Any clues on this? I'm unaware of any cancel where the place name appears in quotation marks.

Hi The Pom,

Try "Fraser"! In the phoenix database there is a picture of such a postmark and it actually has the quotation marks!

Greetings

That's very odd, why use quotation marks?

Thanks Josto!

This is the image from the Phoenix website.

As said, very odd. Does anyone have any idea why?

The Pom,

Your request is timely.

The attached scan is of a piece I recently saw in the collection of a colleague. Intrigued, I asked for a scan. Apparently it was not unusual to include the place name in quotation marks when issuing instructions, with the understanding that the manufacturer would remove.

Hi Gordon

Spoke to Woody this morning.

P P (Parcel Post) Postal Hall Melbourne he believes was at the GPO Melbourne in Elizabeth Street at the Parcel Post counter in the main hall.

Some suggestions are that it was in the Russell Street Post Office, but he doesn't think that was right & was more logical to be located at the GPO.
