Well, it's been only a month since the bump, but we need one again.

Having just wasted an hour of two faffing about on the internet trying to find a '1/2' shortcut for my MAC laptop, I have found it, I think :)

Image

This table says a '1/2' cannot be done easily on a Mac, as say a £ or ¥ or ™

I've since found you can go to 'Edit' tab at the top menu bar, then scroll down to 'special characters' then type 'fraction'

Voila: ½ ¾ and so on

LONG way to go about something, but at least I got there in the end!

cheers

The same reason that somebody would waste 'an hour or two' when the information about Macs has already been posted on the thread, I suppose :?

Incidentally, in our current heatwave* (when even Australian players at Wimbledon have complained about the heat), the iMac with its convection cooling and no fan, is much quieter and has far less impact on the ambient temperature than an old tower PC would have.

(A July record 36.7ºC at Heathrow yesterday, and not less than 25ºC all night here.)

That's not necessary, either. Copy the likely required characters onto a stickytab on the Mac's dashboard and they are there at the swipe of a smart-mouse, and ready to copy and paste at will. I do it all the time:

½
¼
¾

With this thread running over 5 pages - some 240 posts - I must have missed the Mac info buried back on page 2 - so sue me

Seems over 90% of the posts relate to Windows PC's in any case....why is it so hard for them?

Anyway, the fractions remain on the 'special characters' selection now, so are much faster to get to compared to the first time.

¼ ½ ¾

I don't think it will work on websites, but in documents (esp OpenOffice) typing 1/2 will produce ½ just as (c) will produce the copyright symbol. And if ti doesn't work this way by default, you can set autocorrect to do it.

Judging by several recent posts which include 1 1/2d or perforation of 141/2 it's time for this thread to be bumped again.

The new members will be able to type 1½d and 14½ as appropriate.

I'm not sure how the back-end of this forum works, but couldn't all these special characters be added to the smilies menu to the left, when you're composing a message?

It would make things easier :D :) :( :o  £ $ ½ ¾

I'm sure you have your answer there. This forum software doesn't even enable full HTML. But as we get it for free, I don't see any reason for the host to spend his own money 'fixing' something that is easy to do. Most of us have ways in which we can simply copy and paste from either sticky notes on our desktop or documents that are often open. Viz:

½
¼
¾

That's a good idea (copy & paste) - it's what I do :)

Maybe, all the usual mistyped and handy to have characters could be inserted below where it says "Message body: Enter your message here, it may contain no more than 80000 characters.", then everyone could copy and paste from there?

It's possible that that text is modifiable by the head-admin of this site, depending on his forum privileges. :)

dave222 you can install an extension to your browser.

I installed this on Chrome:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10082&start=150#p3570086

And I can insert ½, ¼, ¾ very quickly. :D

Ah! That's good - never seen it before - takes 2 seconds to set up, too :)

Still, it involves people installing it and some wouldn't go to the troble of doing that :(

For MAC users

this has possibly been covered in one of the last 4 of 5 pages as I only had the mental stamina for the the first page, but for mac users in Australia, the 'Option' and '3' keys pressed simultaneously will give you a perfect £ symbol.

If I've researched correctly, there is some BBCode that will render 3/16 or any other fraction as a fraction >>> [fraction]3, 16[/fraction] ... however I can't get it to work on a post here as you can see :) - maybe this board blocks that particular code or it uses an older version that doesn't recognise it?

I use the ¢ symbol a lot, and simply use ALT+0162 = ¢

Penny Post card EP33 size 4 3/16" x 5¼"

I'd use "3¼ x 5¼" - who really cares!

Gibbons have a million things listed as "Perf 12" that are really perf 11.8 or 12.21 etc and no-one cares, now, or for the past century.

Not every symbol and fraction is available within a normal font. Only the more widely used such as ¼, ½, ¾

There are fonts available that will shows math and fractions, (I have some that go up to 15/16th's) but they will not display within the SB system.

Not entirely correct Greg.

½ ⅓ ⅕ ⅙ ⅛ ⅔ ⅖ ⅚ ⅜ ¾ ⅗ ⅝ ⅞ ⅘

etc, etc

If you cut and paste these, they appear fine here.

I have found a solution to my query - not "scientific" but it will work.

Tried the two below methods but couldn't make sense...

Image

https://techlib.com/area_50/Readers/Lennie/Castaway/Handy%20Chart2.pdf

Image

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010- ... 4ee3e09454

Then - Thinking Cap on - I tried something else and ended up with this result....

Image

Image

What I wanted was that the "3/16" be smaller than the "4" as per "5 ¼".

So I kept the "4" at Font Size 12 and changed the "3/16" Font Size to 8.

It didn't change size in the Excel Function Cell but changed in Cell in the body of the spreadsheet.

I'm happy.

Ah! I think we all thought you meant how to render fractions on Stampboards. Rendering fractions in Office is easy to format, using superscript and subscript.

dave222,

If you can tell me how to produce in Office, I would appreciate it.

Barry
In Office (Excel/Word etc) (I have Office 2010, but it should be the same procedure in newer/older versions, but the menus may be different)
Type 3/16
Using your mouse, select the "3"
Expand the "Font" panel under the "Home" tab
Check "Superscript"

Repeat for the "16", but check "Subscript"

Voila!

To create sixteenths in Microsoft Word you can use an equation field.

Press Ctrl+F9 to insert the curly braces that define a field. Between these braces enter for example EQ \F(5,16) then Shift+F9.

Set the font size for the resulting equation to approximately one-half the size of the surrounding text.

Highlight the fraction and choose AutoCorrect from the Tools menu. Just below the middle of the resulting dialog you'll see two boxes labeled Replace and With. The With box should contain your fraction, with "Formatted text" selected above it. Enter 5/16 in the Replace box

and click OK. Now when you enter 5/16 you'll get the nicely formatted fraction.

Repeat this process for any other combinations you want.
It's a bit slow, but you only have to do it once.

Thanks to dave222 and satsuma.

I managed to get dave222's formula to work :D but, when I try satsuma's, the equation between curly brackets disappears when I press SHIFT F9. :(

Thanks

There are two likely reasons for this:

Either:
There is an error in your formula entry or format and word doesn't know how to proceed

Or:
You have the entire formula highlighted (highlit?) and it replaces the formula with
nothing... in the same way as the replace function normally works.

If you switch on your show hide button¶ it should look like this:
{·EQ·\F(5,16)·}¶

Actually, I've just checked and it should work even when it's all highlighted

Tried again... Word 2003

I got to this point...

Image

with the cursor still inside the right curly bracket, highlighted all and held SHIFT and pressed F9

Received this result...

Image

Tried with cursor to the right of the right curly bracket for the same result.

Bazza
There's supposed to be a space between the EQ and the \
That's why I showed you the show/hide format.

Makes you think the French had the best idea over a century ago, to use a decimal system.

Yes, actually it was over two centuries ago now, but.........

Your computer and hand-held devices use the binary system, originally because either off or on was a simply determined state of a valve, and more recently as the circuitry is simpler and hence the operational speeds are faster.

In binary one sixteenth is the short number 0.0001 exactly but one tenth is 0.00011001100110011..........indefinitely

Also, the metre as originally defined, was one 10 millionth of ¼ of the earth's circumference so the metre wasn't exactly metric by definition

Just saw this ugly mess as a thread heading here, which despite it making no sense as a question of any kind, means this thread is well worth a BUMP!

I was so proud of being on Mac and having the «Special Characters» option under the «Edit» menu. :(

Now, I have updated my OS to Maveriks :( :( :( :(

The «Special Characters» option is still there under the «Edit» menu, but this upgrade is an awful regression. The Special Characters on offer are mostly childish images and smilies. Gone are the various alphabets, accents, mathematical notations and everything that was useful. In are the «cute» symbols that can enliven your Facebook entries but are no more useful than that.

I'm currently using Sierra, but I believe the special characters access is still the same as in Maverick.

Sierra has Emoji & Symbols in the Edit memu. Opening that gives you this window.

Select Currency Symbols in the left-hand menu and you'll get choices. Add the ones you want to the Favorites by clicking on Add to Favorites.

To add fractions to your Favorites, type "fraction" in the search box and you'll get this window.

Repeat the process of selecting characters to add to your Favorites.

Finally, when you pull up Emoji & Symbols in the future, you'll select Favorites.

Works for me ...
Many thanks!

A two month gap while people concentrated on Imguring, but a horrible example on Belgian stamps has just appeared, so another bump for this.
