Hello All.

I have been collecting and buying and selling stamps since Christmas 2020 when I was intrigued by some of my late grandfathers stamps attached to some Christmas cards for postage. Since then I have collected GB and anything that takes my fancy as well as buying and selling duplicates and other items on eBay.
Some of my collecting highlights include finding a sg438 £1 PUC in a £20 charity lot and getting numerous good value auction lots on ebay, I collect at a rough breakeven because my eBay sales are enough to subsidize my purchases.
If you have any questions please message me or email me at [email protected], I'm new to this community but am looking forward to becoming a regular.

Regards C.S

Hello, community. Paul here.. New to this board, but hope to become a consistent part of it. I have been collecting stamps for about 2 years now. after about a 30 year hiatus from when I last collected as a child. I ended up straying way from Stamps as a youngster cause it was " cooler" to collect comics and cards, but with age I uess we all learn. I am not the most knowledgeable collector just yet, but i pick up things fairly qyuickly so I hope I can become a blessing to the board.

Thanks again for welcoming me in. pleasure to meet you all

Hello and welcome from a stamp user. Some of the stamps I have for postage show comics/comic characters (DC/Marvel, Dennis the Menace, etc)
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I muse on letters and stamps at correspondencefan.blogspot.co.uk. I have a forum, A World of Snail Mail. I need to collect "Welt der Briefe" stamps from Deutsche Post. I may need help to postally use RM postage stamps - does anyone want to get into letter writing?

I inherited tens of thousands of postage stamps (2/3s of them still on paper) from my parents and grandparents, and have only recently sought to tackle the project (Covid did something useful). I realize it may in some ways be a "waste" of time, but I am committed to trying to make a complete record of what they left me.

I've catalogued approximately 13K mint and 15K cancelled stamps so far, with more to go! I don't know how I could have accomplished any of it without software and the internet!

I'm on a little trip away from home (and away from some of my resources), and started cataloguing the foreign (which to me are non-USA) stamps, and came across your site while seeking answers to some watermark, type, and die questions (Brazil, Canada, China, etc.). I deeply appreciate the knowledge and information I was able to find here (and a few other helpful sites).

I do have questions, but I'll leave those for other posts (I guess I don't want to be a fresh newbie for too long!). I feel I should acquaint myself with how to best search various topics on here before posting too many questions!

Hello and welcome, DBP171. That's quite a bundle you have there! We'll be interested to see some photos of the more interesting items when you get the time ...

The "Test and post your images" thread in the first ROLL CALL section of the Forum gives some guidance on how to do that.

Hi,

As per instructions, a brief intro...

I'm Mike, based in London. I collected stamps as a child and started again a couple of years ago at which point I discovered how much more interesting it is now that the internet exists. I've messed around a bit with buying and selling on eBay as a bit of fun and I've bought a few bits ands pieces via auctions. I'm interested in GB Stamps, particularly QV and KEVII.

Cheers,

Mike.

PS. I see that I apparently joined in May 2022. I often take a while to get on with things.

Hi All,
I live in NY in the US. Also back to collecting after a long hiatus, about 2 years now. I collect too many areas. Mostly GB, British Colonies (primarily KGVI Era), & US. I love cancels, especially US fancy cancels, Penny Reds & GB Lilacs at the moment. Also started putting aside a few topics and countries to assemble at some point in the future. Im basically an out of control stamp hoarder. But I have tons to learn still and am hoping to do a good bit of that here.

Hello there. My name is In Greig. I am a member of the stamp club of Tampa, the APS, Scouts on Stamps International, and several other stamp collecting groups.

I started collecting when I was seven years old when a lady who knew my mother gave me her collection in an album. I was hooked. I am now 87 yrs old so I have 80 years of collecting.

In addition as a Tropical Agronomist I have had the opportunity to live and visit very extensively around the world so I have used that opportunity build a wide selection of stamps.

However that said I was born and raised in the UK and as a result I learned much about the foundations of the Brit Empire. This shows in my interests in collecting:-

Mafeking, White Raja's of Sarawak, Camel post of Sudan, Brit East India Company. early Persians, etc.

I welcome any information about the stamps of these subjects or sources of info.

Being a Scot I have a partiality towards the few stamps there are with reference to Robert Burns.

Yours aye for auld land syne.

Ian.

Hi there folks!!

So how did I get into this>>> collected stamps as a youngster in the 80's after my dad passed down two albums, which he in turn had inherited from his father (my grandfather who come out to South Africa from Switzerland in the 1930's).

Was not a big collection of stamps but mainly Swiss - nothing exceptional!! .. but, what always intrigued was the first 10 pages in one of the albums was denuded of stamps - according to my father stolen by a "friend" when he was a youngster.

These pages included the "Cape of Good Hope", and apparently he had a number of Cape Triangles which were stolen.... Never saw any triangles as a youngster and over time, as with many of us, lost interest in stamp collecting, that is until Covid hit!!!

Scratched up the albums and my mix of stamps to try keep my son (and myself) entertained, and the bug bit again!! Initially mainly sorting out my grandfather's Swiss stamps and as Covid restrictions were lifted looking for albums in antique shops and secondhand book shops.

Long story short, stumbled upon an old collection of mainly Southern African (Rhodesias,Nyasaland, SWA, and South Africa) stamps. This included a gaggle of COGH triangles - the first I had seen let alone handled.

Have spent the last couple of years sorting out the collection, which was in a bit of a shambles (most probably still is!!), and have had a closer look at the triangles recently, some interesting ones including Grahamstown roller cancel and one of which, I am almost 100% sure, is a 'frame variety' of SG 3 - if so would like to think of it as generational Kharma :D .

Anyway - that's my story for now...

Cheers
David

No doubt many of your stamps, collected while working in the tropics, bring back fond memories of your experiences.

I am Alastair,
I live in the South of England and inherited my grandfather's stamp collection some 14 years ago. I have since been trying to sort it and tidy it up, add nice completion sets, or individual stamps etc.
I buy from Ebay and bid in usually UK stamp auctions for boxes and albums extracting what I want/need and then resell on ebay. Occasionally coming across unknown stamps. I have one that has me stumped.
Particularly interested in old Malaysia states and Old Persia. I also have a good Spain , Greece and USA collection.
Obviously I collect UK too.

Hi,

Mathew here from the UK, based near Oxford.

My main collecting is GB, QV and the Four Kings. I typically collect to the SG Concise catalogue listing. I'm good at Plating Penny Blacks if anyone needs a hand and I have built a decent colour shades reference. I also collect pre-stamp history of Oxfordshire.

One of the serious 'rabbit holes' I have also delved into is anything to do with the Azemar Experimental Cancellation. I probably have the largest collection in this area and so am always looking for more material and information.

Now I have a little more time on my hands, I have joined a couple of Philatelic Societies. I am keen to promote stamp collecting and do find some of the social media outlets, like Instagram, Facebook and Reddit quite useful.

Regards,

Mat

I was a very big collector when I was younger until I got to college. Then I did it when I could, but did drift away. I got back into collecting about 5 years ago, after 10 to 15 years away, but not as actively as I was.

Last year I introduced my 2 Daughters to the world of Stamps. One was 14 and the other was 18. They are both interested in the hobby and enjoy sorting new stamps. learning about the world in general, and also enjoy finding new areas on the globe.

Now about me and why I am here. I had a friend who was a missionary priest in Japan, and he was a very big stamp collector of world stamps. He was the one who taught me how to expand our small family collection. And when he came back to Canada, he would always bring me some used stamps from Japan and the region. He was also the one who helped me to learn how to save the stamps properly, and how to retrieve used stamps.

My main interests have always been Canada, the United States and Japan. But my collection also includes stamps of the world. I also have a side interest in the topics of Olympic stamps and old trains.

My current goals are to get my kids more interested in the hobby and to make some new unique albums.

I recently got a box of world stamps from a Facebook auction, and there are several stamps with perforations letters etc, so they have piqued my interest in them.

I am joining as a place of information to questions I may get.

Thank you.

I am a retired physicist in Szeged, Hungary. I started to collect post stamps when I was 6 year old and when received a few stamps and a small stamp collecting album from my parents for Christams. Since that time I collect all kinds of post stamps (however I like the best stamps with subjects in relation to natural sciences).

Last year I introduced my 2 Daughters to the world of Stamps. One was 14 and the other was 18. They are both interested in the hobby and enjoy sorting new stamps. learning about the world in general, and also enjoy finding new areas on the globe.

Hello and welcome to kevinv. May I say that if your main interest was stamps with inverted images of King Edward VII, then an appropriate Stampboards ID might be keviiinv. :)

More seriously, the challenge of enthusing younger people (family, friends, acquaintances) about stamp collecting is a tricky undertaking that many of us work at with mixed success.

I have found that simply giving lots of stamps (and collection paraphernalia such as stock books or Hagner sheets) is usually not successful. The acquisition of all those items with no effort on the part of the recipient usually results in neutral or low interest in the items that we think are attractive, interesting, perhaps even moderately valuable...

A better approach is to show a (small) portion of your own collection, and share your enthusiasm for what you show by briefly explaining what it is that you find interesting about the portion you show. Let time pass, then repeat, with another part of your collection — perhaps some new additions to the collection. If you do this a few times, what you are sharing and imparting is your enthusiasm.

If this showing of portions of your collection on several occasions successfully serves as a bonding activity, then it is likely the younger beneficiary will have acquired a moderate level of interest in the stamps you showed, and a moderate understanding of why anyone would want to collect them. In that case, you can ask whether they would like to have several of your spares/duplicates, and a Hagner sheet to put them in.

Not too soon after, show another part of your collection, share your enthusiasm about it, and ask whether the younger beneficiary would like several more spares that have come your way recently. You can ask them which two or three among several spares they would like to add to their Hagner sheet, and ask why they chose the ones they did choose.

And so on. Gradually, not too much at once, but always saying why you like what you have in your collection. Also, show a few more spares you have, allowing the junior to select several from a somewhat larger group of potential choices, and ask for the reasons why those selections were made.

Some years ago I served as a mentor for a group of juniors meeting at a local library once a month. I found that a popular activity towards the end of each meeting was for a modest mixture of loose stamps to be placed on a table, with the 8-10 juniors allowed to simultaneously browse through the mixture looking for ten stamps they would like to choose to add to one of their collections. This worked well as a group activity, especially because each had chosen a particular theme or topic they liked to collect, and when any of them came across a stamp that fitted one of the other's themes they would show that stamp to the appropriate person, so that person could choose it as one of their ten if they didn't already have it and thought it would be a good choice. That kind of cooperation and shared pleasure was very reinforcing of everyone's enthusiasm for their collecting. From time to time they would be asked to bring along part of their collection to show the others, and tell them something about what they were showing...

Perhaps some of those ideas can be adapted to your circumstances. I hope they prove to be helpful.

Years ago I collected Fleetwood and other FDCs, but gave them all to my nephew as he was getting into the hobby. I kept two covers with 3-cent stamps: Edgar Allan Poe, Richmond VA, October 7, 1949... and Railroad Engineers of America, Jackson TN, April 29, 1950. These days I occasionally seek out covers with music themes.

Hi. Hank (currently located in France). Although I am not a proper collector, I keep all the postcards and stamps, and I regret they are being replaced by emails and barcodes/QRcodes :-( They remind me of childhood, long before the internet, when small images were enough to make kids travelling all over the world...
