Welcome to Stampboards. It was my intention some years ago to have a thread for each of the countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). I see you have found Kazakhstan; Uzbekistan exists, Ukraine, Georgia, but maybe not all the others.

Please do search before you start a new thread, but if you can’t find one, please do start a new thread for any of the others, and people will join in.

I have over 10,000 covers from that period and I will be looking to dispose of some surplus eventually,

Oh, sorry Nzstamper, your second post ever was in fact the appropriate self-introduction:

Initially I browsed over it too fast to recognise that it was your introduction ;)
All good. You see, you were a "good" new member back in Feb 2021!

Hello, my name is Mihalache Nelu Adrian and I collect stamps...
Here it is, my first post. Reading through the posts, this looks like a very interesting and useful site.
My collecting interests include:
Romania
Germany, including colonies, German states, German occupation of ...
Any philatelic material related to the FIREFIGHTING field
I like to buy bulk lots and sift through them for weeks looking for defects, postage stamps, etc.
I am a beginner and very impressed by this forum where I found very useful information....

Hello and welcome to madyn1 in Bucharest, Romania.

Am I right to think that you are male, Mihalache is your family name, Nelu Adrian are your given names, and you usually are known as Adrian to your friends?

You wrote: "I like to buy bulk lots and sift through them for weeks looking for defects, postage stamps, etc."
Well, there should be no surprise if you find postager stamps in a bulk lot. Did you mean to say something else there, such as "revenue stamps" or "poster stamps"?

I am actually a returning member, not having posted for a few years. I'm currently active in building my collection of Australian CDS postmarks. I've been doing this off and on for about 50 years, but came back to it seriously about 10 years ago. I have a bias in my collecting towards CDS from NSW post offices. While CDS postmarks aren't as pretty as the pictorial postmarks, and not as ancient as numerical postmarks, I find them more interesting because of the history and geography behind each office.

This sounds interesting, is there somewhere I can see the results?

Thanks for accepting me. I collect postcards predominantly but I've become increasingly interested in the associated stamps and postmarks, so I might have a few interesting things to share.

Hello and welcome. "I don't collect postcards" but do have a collection through the post via Postcrossing, and am amazed at the lovely stamps and postmarks on them (I also write/receive letters too).
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I muse on letters and stamps at correspondencefan.blogspot.co.uk. I have a forum, A World of Snail Mail. I need to collect "Welt der Briefe" stamps from Deutsche Post. I may need help to postally use RM postage stamps - does anyone want to get into letter writing?

I'm not sure what you mean by “signed” in this context. What I collect are picture postcards, due to historical interest in the places shown on the picture side. Some are unposted, and some are posted. On those that are posted, I've started to pay a little more attention to the stamps and postmarks.

Yes, I meant posted. My colleagues and I are doing a project to digitize such postcards in order to study communication. Maybe you would be interested in sharing scans of your postcards with us. Once posted on the project website, we transcribe the text and other data and provide the resulting data (free of charge) to researchers.

It would be too large a job for me to scan them all I'm afraid. Good luck with your research though, it sounds very interesting.

Hello and welcome to Mark = Slingshot159 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA.
Mark wrote:I collect all things AMG.
Mark, I have an ongoing campaign requesting users to explain any acronym on first use within a post. (Exceptions would apply only to the most universally used acronyms, like USA). Failure to do this, on this wide-ranging international chat board, results in many readers not knowing what you're talking about, and feeling excluded from the conversation — surely not a desirable result :o

I'm raising this "explain your acronyms" plea here because you tell us, without explanation, that your collecting focuses on "AMG".

Here's what happens when a reader who doesn't share your familiarity with that acronym tries to find out what you're talking about (unnecessary work if you just explain the acronym when you first use it!):

Screenshot 2024-01-07 at 3.58.39 am.png
.
Well, perhaps you collect Mercedes-Benz cars, but I'm guessing not.

Going to Acronym Finder online gives a long list of possibilities for "AMG", in descending order of frequency. There we find:

AMG meanings include Affiliated Managers Group; All Media Guide (group of media websites); Athletic Model Guild; Advanced Merchant Group (credit cards); Algebraic MultiGrid; Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (plasma protein); Australian Map Grid; etc.

You have to go down to the 27th most frequently used meaning to find:
AMG = Allied Military Government
https://www.acronymfinder.com/AMG.html
.
My philatelic experience tells me this is probably the meaning you have in mind. But that meaning of "AMG" will be unfamiliar to many beginners on this chat board, and perhaps to quite a few who are not beginners. We need to make our posts as clear and informative as we can, and that includes explaining acronyms when we first use them in a post.

neilmac63 wrote: 30 Nov 2023 15:49 Hey folks, nice to join the forum.

I am a collector of all NZ stamps. I have a complete simplified MUH collection, but actually specialise in Chalons, Pigeongrams and Postage Dues (both mint and used on cover). I have a reference collection of each and am always looking to add or improve my collections. If you have any pigeon grams you want to move then please don't hesitate to reach out! :D

I have been collecting for 50 years+ and focus on MUH

Outside of stamps I am a keen photographer, golfer, fly fisherman and love wine. Any wine recommendations gratefully received!

Below one of my favourite stamps - the Christchurch Exhibition Penny Claret. Two fun facts for you on the Penny Claret. (1) It was actually printed first (4,000 sheets of them), but the powers that were decided the shade was too dark, so they kept 14 sheets on file, sent one to the Postmaster General, and one to the Exhibition authorities for reference. The rest were destroyed.

ImageThe exhibition authorities mistakenly included theirs with the 1d vermillion stock at the exhibition Post Office and that's how it was sold off. (2) The perforators were paid by the sheet, and so to earn more for less effort they perforated multiple sheets at once. This had the effect of pulling the paper out of alignment and thus the poor perfs - but not on all sheets. Looks like the authorities kept most of the poor ones of the Penny Claret though doesn't it!

The below copy was presented to an ex Governor General, Brigadier Bernard Edward Fergusson, Baron Ballantrae, KT, GCMG, GCVO, DSO, OBE in a complete collection of NZ stamps on his retirement from the role in 1967. This was Government practice for GG and Postmasters until the NZ Post archives were given to Te Papa The Museum of NZ in 1992 when the practice ceased.

Hi Everyone,
What a privilege to be able to join such a wonderful group.
Originally born in NZ (CH-CH) in 1950. I have been collecting stamps since 1960.
My main interests are NZ Post Marks & 1960 Pictorials but have been dabbling in 1d Dominions lately.
I live in Brisbane these days but venture across the "ditch" each year for a few weeks to go whitebaiting in Hokitika.

Hi. My Name is Grant and I live in Christchurch, New Zealand. My stamp collecting focus has condensed over the years to pre-decimal New Zealand, mostly focused on pre-1920 used and postmarks.

I have almost completed my simplified mint/used album with a handful of expensive mint Chalons and FSF to get. I have a couple of stockbooks with most of the varieties of every issue up to the 1940's.

I'm putting most of my current effort into accumulating Chalons and postmarks, particularly obliterators. I'm learning a lot reading blogs from other collectors.

I am a new to this forum, but not new to philately.

What do I collect? I have been collecting for over 50 years now (I started very young about 18 months old). So I have various serious and fun collections. I love creating challenges for myself to build a new collection on something I have never collected before. So this year's challenge in GB postage labels - Frama/Horizon and .....

Hi all, I'm Ken. I've been lurking so long, I didn't realize I hadn't posted here. Apologies. I collect worldwide-ish. My primary collection is US regular issues. But I also collect everything else postal for the US. I expanded my collection to WWI: Stamps being used during WW1 by countries in WW1. Love that one. Then I started to accurate world stamps for that WW1 collection and now I generally collect regular issues worldwide, focused earlier than 1964-ish.

Well, there should be no surprise if you find postager stamps in a bulk lot. Did you mean to say something else there, such as "revenue stamps" or "poster stamps"?

He meant postmarks, Roger ;)

Good day everyone,

A Happy New Year and may you discover the Stamp of your dreams :)

This is Pat from Pretoria, South Africa. My husband and I have started looking into stamps a few years back. Wen down many golden rabbit holes researching them and learned some incredible stories.
We are excited to have discovered Stamp Boards. I've read a few wonderful discussions. Everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable!

Best wishes and many thanks :)

New member as of today. Not really sure what or how to collect yet. I had a random “collection” from my childhood that my parents helped with. Now after decades of my neglect I need to organize these stamps again. So I’m sort of re-learning this old hobby. Lots of questions just to figure out what I have. Then after that, probably more questions to figure out how to proceed from here.

I’m in San Diego. And if you’re a member of the Poway Stamp Club, I hope to run into you in person one of these days. Cheers!

Hi Stampboards Members and Administration

I am a new member and am really happy to be part of this wonderful forum.

I am English, a Nurse by profession and a very keen stamp collector with an interest in stamps from all over the world, although I mainly collect GB and Commonwealth.

I'm really looking forward to contributing and just having that warm feeling of being surrounded by people who share my passion.

Thanks for allowing me to join you all.

Best wishes

Hi I’m Sarah.
I’ve recently inherited lots of stamps which my Dad collected over the last 60 years. I’m looking to find out more about his collection.
Thanks.

Hi I am new to Stampboards. Thank you so much for letting me join. I am from Australia. I am looking forward to learning from you all. I am a total newbi. Had a stamp album at age 11 and only about a year ago, did I again get interested. I love the history of stamps and very much admire collectors and their incredible knowledge.
Regards
Nellie
